BS COMPSCI 3A TASK 1.1

Summarize the main ideas presented in the material. Limit your answer to 500
words only.

Vocation can be defined in many ideas and specifications, such as Biblical idea,
General Vocation, and specific Vocation, but all revolve around the phrase, “To call.”
Vocation contains three essential elements. These are: One who is Calling, where God
is the one who calls; One who is called, where the people called is always free to accept
or refuse; and Purpose of the calling, where every vocation is given to serve people.
Vocation cannot be considered as such if one of the elements is missing.
For the Biblical Idea, the notion of vocation or call here is a principal theme in the
Bible, and it’s described from Old and New Testaments. Vocation has three different
meanings in the Old and New Testaments. Firstly, it means “Creation,” we find God
calling humankind into existence, and we exist because he has pronounced our name.
Secondly, it means “Salvation,” as God calls to save and respond to God’s call changes
a person’s life. Lastly, it means “mission,” as a vocation is a call to serve.
For the General Vocation, vocation is described as the universal call to
discipleship. It is also the particular call that God speaks to each of us in our own unique
lives. Vocation is not reserved for just a few, but we all share from God as our vocation
is to believe in Him and be one with Him in His life, values, options, and mission.
Specifically, we are called to the following: First is the Holiness of life. It is expressed in
multiple ways by those individuals who strive for the perfection of charity and thereby
help others grow. The second is Prayerful; prayer is loving communication with God in
order to discover what indeed is the will of God in our lives. The third is love; the
moment we say “yes” to love, we cannot live in compromise. Love is our ultimate
vocation, and without love, we are nothing. Lastly, a fully human vocation is a call to live
fully. The life we have received from the beginning is a call to be a mature person.
For the Specific Vocation, it should be situated within the context of God’s
general call to humankind to be holy, prayerful, loving, and fully human. The question of
a specific vocation does not arise primarily on the level of God’s call but the level of the
individual’s response. We discover our call to deepen one’s relationship with God and
by active searching and reflecting on the unique talents and spiritual insights that God
has given us.
The simple ways in which we live out our Christian faith reveal how the
relationship of both general and specific vocation works. In conclusion, we are all called
by God in a general way to be men and women of faith. But as we hear this universal
call in our individual lives’ particular contexts and circumstances, we naturally respond
in specific ways. We shape our vocation in response to God’s call.
