SECTION B: GRAMMAR
SIMPLE PAST
I. Form:
He cried / He didn’t cry / Did he cry?
He was very thin when he was 3 years old.
II. Use:
1/ Use the simple past tense to talk about things that are now finished, often with a time expression.

e.g. Albert Rimes lived in the twentieth century.


■ He was a poet.
■ He wrote poetry.

Time expressions that refer to the past (last week, in 1980, in the twentieth century, fifty years ago, etc.).

* If a sentence contains WHEN and has the simple past in both clauses (mệnh đề), __________________

e.g. Rita stood under a tree when it began to rain. (1st: _________________, 2nd: __________________)
When Mrs. Chu heard a strange noise, she got up to investigate.

Past simple can be used to talk about a past habit or state.


e.g. He rode his bike to school every day when he was a child.

e.g She woke up, got out of bed and made a cup of tea.

* The simple past tense of regular verbs is formed by adding -d or -ed.

In one-syllable words (từ có 1 âm tiết), if the verb ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant combination


(CVC), double the final consonant and add -ed.

However, do not double one-syllable words ending in -w, -x, or -y.

In words of two or more syllables (trong những từ có 2 âm tiết hoặc hơn) that end in a consonant-vowel-
consonant combination, double the last consonant only if the last syllable is stressed.
e.g. prefer  preferred , visit  visited

If the verb ends in a consonant + y, change the y to i and add -ed. If the verb ends in a vowel + y, add -ed.
(Do not change the y to i.)
e.g. worry  worried, annoy  annoyed

Pronunciation Rules for the Simple Past Tense of Regular Verbs

The final sound is pronounced /id/ after /t/ and /d/. /id/ adds a syllable to the verb.
e.g. start  stаrted. deсide  deсided

The final sound is pronounced /t/ after the voiceless sounds

The final sound is pronounced /d/ after the other sounds.

PAST CONTINUOUS
I. Form:
I was playing – They were playing
I was not/ wasn’t playing – They weren’t/were not playing
Was I playing? – Yes, you were/No, you weren’t

II. Use:
1/ Describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.
(Miêu tả hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ)
e.g. A: What were you doing at 3:00?
B: We were skiing.
C: I was eating lunch at 3:00.

2/ Describe past action in progress interrupted by another past action. (Hành động đang xảy ra thì bị chen
ngang bởi hành động khác)
The longer action is in the Past Continuous, the shorter action is in the Past Simple.
e.g. I was taking a shower when I heard the telephone ring.

3/ Describe two or more simultaneous past actions of certain duration. (2 hành động xảy ra song song trong
quá khứ)
e.g. While he was skiing, I was reading.

USED TO - BE USED TO + ING FORM/NOUN/PRONOUN - WOULD


Used to expresses past habitual actions and permanent states. (tình trạng và thói quen đã từng có)
e.g. When I was young, I used to go climbing once a month. (state or habit?)
He used to live in Paris. (state or habit?

Would expresses ______________________________________.


e.g. When I was a child, I would go to the cinema every Sunday.
Be used to means "be accustomed to", "be in the habit of.” (quen với/ có thói quen)
e.g. Little children are used to ________________ (go) to bed early in the evening.

WISH: PRESENT AND PAST

II. Use
1/ WISH followed by a verb in the _simple past_ to
talk about things that you want to be true now but that are not true.
e.g. He wishes he ____ a yacht. (He doesn't have a yacht, but he wants one.)
She wishes she _______ the violin but she can’t.
I wish I were not learning English right now. I wish I were playing games.
After wish, use were instead of was.
e.g. Sometimes I wish I were a child again.
2/ Use WISH followed by the past perfect (HAD + V3/ED) to express regrets (sự hối tiếc) about events in
the past.
e.g. They wish they ___________ (move) to the city when they had the chance.
He wishes he _____________________ so fast at the time of the accident.
Use could or could have after wish to express ability.
e.g. He wishes he ________________ more money now. (PRESENT)
He wishes he ___________________ a better job when he was younger. (PAST)

3/ Use WOULD after WISH to express a desire for someone or something to act in a different way. This
often expresses _________________________________
