Vision Statement and Mission Statement Exercise

Apple Inc.

1. Vision Statement: The company is committed to bringing the best user experience to
its customers through its innovative hardware, software, and services

Your assessment:
 Statement should have been able to mention about the specific nature of the
business (technology, consumer electronics, computer software, online
services). “Hardware, software, and services” is quite general.
 The statement, however, is concise and easily understood.

Mission statement (Actual)

“Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife,
iWork, and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods
and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary
iPhone and App Store and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of
mobile media and computing devices.”

(Proposed Mission Statement)

Apple brings the finest technological experience to people of all ages and businesses of
all kinds all over the world (1, 3) through our innovative phones, watches, computers,
software, music, and payment methods (2). Materials used to create these products are
largely recycled
(8), which helps create more profit (5) for our shareholders. Apple leads the digital
music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store (7). Apple innovates to change
the impossible to possible when it comes to technology (4). We immensely value the fair
treatment and compensation of our employees (9, 6). (85 words)
1. Customers 2. Products or services 3. Markets 4. Technology
5. Concern for survival, growth, & profitability 6. Philosophy7. Self-concept
8. Concern for public image 9. Concern for employees
Your assessment in relation to the 9 components of a good mission statement.
 The Apple mission statement is holistic in terms of the 9 components. All
components are present.
 What I appreciate about this mission statement is that some lines cater 2
components. This would imply that the statements are well-thought of and
are real reflections of the company.
 The mission statement is also very specific. Readers would have a good
grasp of the company just by reading this.
Nike, Inc.

2. Vision Statement is “To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.”
Your assessment:

Mission statement is “Do everything possible (7) to expand human potential (6). We
do that by creating groundbreaking sport innovations (4), by making our products (2)
more sustainably (8), by building a creative and diverse global team (9) and by making
a positive impact in communities (8) where we live and work.” (42 words)

1. Customers 2. Products or services 3. Markets 4. Technology

5. Concern for survival, growth, & profitability 6. Philosophy7. Self-concept
8. Concern for public image 9. Concern for employees
Your assessment in relation to the 9 components of a good mission statement.
 Components 1, 3, and 5 are lacking from the mission statement which are all
relevant to a solid mission statement. (Customers, Markets, Concern for
survival, growth & profitability)
 This statement could incorporate the lacking components while also
improving the existing components.
