Preface
The personality of Imam Husain (a.s.) is Universal,
magnanimous and matchless. It is because of his support for
truth that the name of Islam still exists on the face of this earth.
Every tragedy however great fades out over a period of time.
The tragedy of Karbala however becomes more intense with the
passage of time. Though Imam Husain (a.s.) is the grandson of
the Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) he is universally revered by
people of all religions without exception. In fact, his personality
has become synonymous with truth and his adversaries have
become models of falsehood.
His saga of standing for his values has influenced global leaders
like Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi to name few. His
martyrdom woke up the Arab society from deep slumber and
influenced many uprisings against the tyrant Umayyad regime.
Since then his personality has always given the downtrodden in
this World the inspiration to stand up for their rights. The saga
of his sacrifices are recounted every year globally. The highest
number of people gather in his name. The Global
commemoration of his martyrdom involves the largest budget
without any big corporate house or government sponsoring it.
His movement is truly a people’s movement.
Having said this it is very unfortunate that this global Islamic
leader is lately viewed from a sectarian angle by some
hardliners within the Muslim community. These recent hard-
line and sectarian movements in the recent past have pushed the
Muslim Ummah into an age of ignorance.
40 traditions about Imam Husain (a.s.) 7

For the youths to get a glimpse of the hallowed personality of

Imam Husain (a.s.) we hereby present 40 traditions mentioned
about him by the Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.). These
traditions are derived only from those Muslim sources which
are well acceptable to most of the Muslims.
We pray that this small effort of collecting the excellences of
Imam Husain (a.s.) brings a smile on luminous face of his
mother Janabe Fatima Zahra (s.a.).

In His Name and by the Help of His Last Proof (a.t.f.s.)

Preface by Publisher
In 1965, a Bohri Alawi Muslim with pure intention went for the
Search of Truth about the Imamat of the Imams after Imam
Jafar-e-Sadiq (a.s.). In his sincere efforts he was helped by an
Aalim-e-Rabbani Maulana Sayed Gulam Askari Sahab.
By the grace of Allah, he came to the conclusion that after
Imam-e-Sadiq (a.s.), Imam Moosa Kazim (a.s.) is the TRUE
and DIVINELY appointed Imam. By 1970, there were about six
Bohra families who accepted the Shia Ithna-Ashari Faith. In
1971, a Jamaat – ‘Bohra Shia Ithna Ashari Jamat’ was formed
and registered with the Charity Commissioner to take care of
the new families.
Since then its members have tried to spread the truth through
various platforms and media. Among their endeavours in
spreading the true Islam is publication of Islamic literatures.
The first book printed by the Jamaat was ‘From Darkness
towards Light - A True story of an Ismaili Mustali Bohra
accepting Shia faith.
Thereafter, the Jamaat has published several books like Who is
your Imam ?, Wilayat Ahle Bait (a.s.), Miracles of Holy
Prophet (s.a.w.a.), Crying for Imam Husain (a.s.), The war of
Siffin, Ghaibat of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.), Companions &
Enemies of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.), Anger, The Human Resource
Management Polices outlined by Imam Ali (a.s.) etc.
We are pleased to publish this book “40 traditions about Imam
Husain (a.s.) from the books of Ahle Sunnat” compiled by CA
40 traditions about Imam Husain (a.s.) 9

Ashfaque Mohsin Karim who is a qualified Chartered

Accountant, Professor in college and a Management consultant.
He has been in the field of teaching and training since two
decades. He is an active member of the shia community. May
Allah reward him and his parents.
This book will help the members of our society know that the
traditions about Imam Husain (a.s.) are found even in the books
of Ahle Sunnat.
We dedicate this book to our master, Imam Zamana (a.t.f.s.),
the beloved, the hope of humanity, the Light of Allah, the Proof
of Allah on this earth. May Allah accept our endeavours.

Anas bin Malik said, “The head of Al-Husain was brought to
‘Ubaidullah bin Ziyad and was put in a tray, and then Ibn Ziyad
started playing with a stick at the nose and mouth of Al-
Husain’s head and saying something about his handsome
features.” Anas then said (to him), “Al-Husain resembled the
Prophet more than the others did.”

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Shaddad, this his father said:
“The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) came out to us for one of the
night time prayers, and he was carrying Hasan or Husain. The
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) came forward and put him down,
then he said the Takbir and started to pray. He prostrated during
his prayer, and made the prostration lengthy.” My father said: “I
raised my head and saw the child on the back of the Messenger
of Allah (s.a.w.a.) while he was prostrating so I went back to
my prostration. When the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) finished
praying, the people said: “O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), you
prostrated during the prayer for so long that we thought that
something had happened or that you were receiving a
revelation.’ He said: ‘No such thing happened. But my son was
riding on my back and I did not like to disturb him until he had
enough.’”

tended to my need, I said: ‘What is this that you were covering

“My mother asked me: ‘When is your planned time - meaning

time to see him since such and such time.’ She rebuked me, so I

44 40 traditions about Imam Husain (a.s.)

Narrated ‘Umar bin Abi Salamah - the step-son of the Prophet

(s.a.w.a.):
“When these Ayat were revealed to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.):
‘Allah only wishes to remove the Rijs from you, O members of
the family, and to purify you with a thorough purification...’
(33:33) in the home of Umm Salamah (a.r.), he called for
Fatimah, Hasan, Husain (a.s.), and wrapped them in the cloak,
He placed Ali (a.s.) behind them, then he said: ‘O Allah! These
are the people of my house, so remove the Rijs from them, and
purify them with a thorough purification.’ So Umm Salamah
(a.r.) said: ‘And am I with them O Messenger of Allah
(s.a.w.a.)?’ He said: ‘You are in your place, and you are on
goodness.’”

They had gone out with the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) to a meal to

which they had been invited, and Husain (a.s.) was there

“The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) used to seek refuge for Hasan (a.s.) and
Husain (a.s.) and say: A’udhu bi kalimatil-lahil- tammati, min
kulli shaitanin wa hammah, wa min kulli “aynin lammah (I seek
refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allah, from every
devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye).’
And he would say: “Thus Ibrahim used to seek refuge with
Allah for Isma’il and Ishaq, ’ or he said: “for Isma’il and

33. Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) crying on the
martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.)
It was narrated from “Abdullah bin Nujayy from his father that
He travelled with ‘Ali (‫ )رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬- he was the one who carried
his vessel for wudoo’. When he reached Neenawa on his way to
Siffeen, ‘Ali (‫ )رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬called out: Be patient, Abu
“Abdullah; be patient, Abu ‘Abdullah, on the banks of the
Euphrates. I said: what did he say? He said: I entered upon the
Prophet (s.a.w.a.) one day and his eyes were flowing with tears.
I said: O Prophet (s.a.w.a.) of Allah, has someone upset you?
Why are your eyes flowing with tears? He said: “No, but Jibreel
left me a while ago. He told me that al-Husain (a.s.) would be
killed on the banks of the Euphrates, And he said: “Would you
like to smell his dust (the dust of the land where he will fall)?” I
said: Yes. He stretched out his hand and picked up a handful of
dust and gave it to me, and I could not help but weep.”

34. Resemblance to Holy Prophet
(s.a.w.a.)
It was narrated that ‘Ali (‫ )رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬said:
Al-Hasan (‫ )رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬most closely resembles the Messenger of
Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬in the chest and head, and Al-Husain (‫)رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬
most closely resembles the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬in what is lower than
that.
(Musnad Ahmad 774 Arabic/English book: Book 5, Hadith 774
Musnad Ahmed)
35. Naming of Hasnain (a.s.)
It was narrated that ‘Ali (‫ )رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬said:
When al-Hasan (a.s.) was born, I named him Hamzah. When al-
Husain (a.s.) was born, I named him after his paternal uncle
Ja”far. Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) called me and
said: “I have been commanded to change the names of these
two.” I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. And he
named them Hasan and Husain. (‫)رﴈ ﷲ ﻋﳯﻤﺎ‬

Narrated ‘Amir bin Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas:
from his father, saying “Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan ordered
Sa’d, saying ‘What prevented you from reviling Abu Turab-
Hazrat Ali (a.s.)?’ He said: ‘Three things that I remember from
the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) prevent me from reviling him.
That I should have even one those things are more beloved to
me than red camels.
1. I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) speaking to ‘Ali
(a.s.), and he had left him behind in one of his battles. So
‘Ali (a.s.) said to him: “O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.)!
You leave me behind with women and children?” So, the
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said to him: “Are you not
pleased that you should be in the position with me that
Harun (a.s.) was with Musa (a.s.)? Except that there is no
Prophethood after me?”
2. And on the Day of (the battle of) Khaibar, I heard him
saying: “I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah

and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love

him.” So, we all waited for that, then he said: “Call ‘Ali
(a.s.) for me.” He said: ‘So he came to him, and he had
been suffering from Ramad (an eye condition), so he
(s.a.w.a.) put spittle in his eye and gave the banner to him,
then Allah granted him victory.
3. And when this Ayah was revealed: ‘Let us call our sons
and your sons, our women and your women...’ (3:61) the
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) called ‘Ali, Fatimah, Hasan,
and Husain (a.s.) and said: “O Allah, these are my
