General Guidelines

1. A Cover page or title page – You should always attach a title page to your assignment. Use previous
page as your cover sheet and be sure to fill the details correctly.
2. This entire brief should be attached in first before you start answering.
3. All the assignments should prepare using word processing software.
4. All the assignments should print in A4 sized paper, and make sure to only use one side printing.
5. Allow 1” margin on each side of the paper. But on the left side you will need to leave room for
binging.

Word Processing Rules

1. Use a font type that will make easy for your examiner to read. The font size should be 12 point, and
should be in the style of Time New Roman.
2. Use 1.5-line word-processing. Left justify all paragraphs.
3. Ensure that all headings are consistent in terms of size and font style.
4. Use footer function on the word processor to insert Your Name, Subject, Assignment No, and
Page Number on each page. This is useful if individual sheets become detached for any reason.
5. Use word processing application spell check and grammar check function to help edit your
assignment.

Important Points:

1. Check carefully the hand in date and the instructions given with the assignment. Late submissions
will not be accepted.
2. Ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the assignment by the due date.
3. Don’t leave things such as printing to the last minute – excuses of this nature will not be accepted
for failure to hand in the work on time.
4. You must take responsibility for managing your own time effectively.
5. If you are unable to hand in your assignment on time and have valid reasons such as illness, you
may apply (in writing) for an extension.
6. Failure to achieve at least a PASS grade will result in a REFERRAL grade being given.
7. Non-submission of work without valid reasons will lead to an automatic REFERRAL. You will then
be asked to complete an alternative assignment.
8. Take great care that if you use other people’s work or ideas in your assignment, you properly
reference them, using the HARVARD referencing system, in you text and any bibliography,
otherwise you may be guilty of plagiarism.
9. If you are caught plagiarizing you could have your grade reduced to A REFERRAL or at worst you
could be excluded from the course.

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by
machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. Computer
science defines AI research as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its
environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals.
Artificial Intelligence covers computer systems which are able to perform tasks normally requiring
human intelligence. These tasks might include visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making,
and translation between languages and many more.
AI impacts on every aspect of society and has the potential to be fully integrated into daily work and
social lives in the very near future.

Learner requires to select a suitable area from the areas given below to conduct a research and
further, needs to develop appropriate Topic, Research Questions and Research Objectives.
 How does AI aid the in-depth exploration of an environment or system?
 What role may AI play in generating content for big brand products and services?
 How does AI and machine learning contribute to the innovative use of technology e.g. robotics,
automotive transportation?
 What impact will the future influences of AI have in our daily lives?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The Learner requires to produce a research proposal that clearly defines a research question or hypothesis,
supported by a literature review (Use the project proposal and ethical consideration form template formats)

Project Proposal should cover following areas;

1. Definition of research problem or question. (This can be stated as a research question,

Sandali Fernando Computing Research Project: Assignment 01 Page 9

objectives or hypothesis)
2. Provide a literature review giving the background and conceptualization of the proposed area
of study. (This would provide existing knowledge and benchmarks by which the data can be
judged)
3. Consider and define research methodology and research process. Demonstrate
understanding of the pitfalls and limitations of the methods chosen and ethical issues
that might arise.
4. Draw points (1–3, above) together into a research proposal by getting agreement with your tutor.

Abstract
“The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer
programs”.
-John McCarthy-
Artificial Intelligence is an approach of making a computer, robot or a product to think and behave
as smart as a human by studying how human brain think, learn, decide and work at solving
problems resulting intelligent software systems.
Prime objective of AI is to improve computer functions which are related to human knowledge,
such as problem-solving, reasoning, learning, knowledge representations, planning, natural
language processing and ability to move and manipulate objects.
Approaches of implementing AI include statistical methods, computational intelligence and
traditional AI coding. Computer science focuses on AI in science, mathematics, psychology,
linguistics, philosophy and so on.
Wide use of internet and smart devices have resulted the broad embracement of social media among
the human society. Presently, children to adults have got themselves engaged in sharing posts,
status, etc. specially using social media such as Facebook and twitter at their earliest at the
occurrence of an event.
This nature of social media ends up the platform flooded with quick updates when there is a natural
disaster or an emergency situation faster than any other method of publishing news. The
information generated by the general public could be used as an asset to reduce risk and build
awareness among public regarding the disaster as well as to be an aid in decision making for relief
efforts.
The proposed research focuses on developing a decision-making support using the content
generated in social media during disastrous situations in Sri Lanka.
The content would be mainly tweets posted by public during a natural disaster, consisted of text
written in English. Hence, in the research, text mining would be utilized, with natural language
processing since the content is unstructured.

Section Three: Literature sources searched
Use of key literature sources to support your research question, objective or hypothesis:
Literature Review
According to Saminda Premarathna, the popularity of the internet and smart devices, has made social
media famous at the present context among individuals in almost all the age groups, which assists in
creating and sharing of their personal feelings, experiences, ideas, as well as information with other
users connected to them over a computer mediated technology. At the occurrence of an emergency and a
natural disasters social media application are loaded with content generated from general pubic who are
affected, who are looking for their family members and friends, who are looking for information as well
as with the people engaged in humanitarian activities. Hence, social media has become the first to
publish related information when there is a catastrophic event, even before government bodies and news
broadcasts engaged in disaster management. Therefore, the quickness and accuracy of the content
published in social media related to the above subject could be used as an asset to reduce risk and
develop awareness among the general public about the disasters as well as to provide decision making
support to act as an aid for relief efforts.
(Premarathna, 2019)

According to the research done by Imalka, it focuses on developing a decision-making support using
social media content generated during disaster situations in Sri Lankan context, majorly using the twitter
posts generated using English language. Therefore, situational awareness building will be conducted
with the use of text mining with natural language processing in this study since the content is
unstructured.
Techniques such as scrape, clean and classify will be used to analyze real information about the disaster
and to visualize them to support decision making for authorities and volunteers engaged in disaster
management.
