Tips for taking online courses

Like most mammals, humans are an incredibly social species. Chatting

with friends, and interacting pleasantly with strangers, triggers
positive emotions.

However, we are attaching ourselves continuously to phones, tablets

and laptops, as we “interact” with others.

Living in the internet era means we are bombarded all day (and night)
with news and notifications. Parents text their kids when they want
them to come downstairs for dinner. Phones ping with weather and
traffic updates or social media posts at all hours.

Many of us cannot remember a less connected way of life - it’s a new

lifestyle; the one with our screens.

Here are some proven pointers on how to complete online courses

amidst all the distraction:

1. Think about the reasons why you started a course

You enrolled in online courses for good reasons: perhaps you want a
better job, preparing for a new career field or want to earn a
credential. You will have an easier time staying on track when you
remind yourself about the next opportunities after the course
completion.

2. Create realistic goals

Set small, attainable goals for each class to avoid getting discouraged
and overwhelmed.
3. Visualize the outcome
Think about the ultimate goal - learning a new skill, career change or
whatever. Don’t get distracted for short-term pleasures when you
already have set-up your long-term vision.

4. Create a sensible schedule

Develop a plan to stay on task so you can complete your coursework
while still allowing time to enjoy the things you like to do.

5. Reward yourself
Everyone deserves a pat on the back every now and again. As you
complete your coursework

6. Aim for balance

Taking up a course, working a full-time job and managing your lfe can
become difficult at few points but it’s important to focus on blocks.
Socialise with friends, take a trip or watch a movie - Taking occasional
breaks will help you return to your studies refreshed and ready to
focus.

7. Stay positive
Reward yourself for achievements, take regular breaks, get a study
buddy, get a change of scene by changing your study place, keep up
your regular hobbies or put the radio on.

Still not feeling motivated?

Give yourself a day off and come back to it fresh in the morning. Time
away from your work and a good night’s sleep will do you wonders.
