Properties of Chords: Perpendicular From The Center To Chords

The document discusses properties of chords in a circle. It states that a perpendicular line drawn from the center of a circle to a chord bisects the chord. It also states that the line joining the center of a circle and the midpoint of a chord is perpendicular to the chord. Several examples are given to demonstrate these properties and theorems regarding equal chords being equidistant from the center and chords being equidistant from the center being equal in length.

Perpendicular from the Center to chords

Theorem 4.8 : from Center bisects Chord Theorem

A perpendicular line from the center O of a circle to

a chord bisects the chord. The two lines from the
midpoint of the chords are equal.
Theorem 4.9 : Line joining the center and Midpoint of chord

The line Joining the center O of a circle and the

midpoint of a chord is perpendicular to the chord.
Example 1: In the figure, is the center of the circle . The length of
chord is 12 cm. is a point on such that .
Find length of AC .
Example 2 : In the figure, is the center of the circle . The radius OA
and chord are 5cm and 8cm, respectively. Find the
distance between chord AB and center O.
Example 3: In the figure, is the center of the circle. Diameter CD
intersects chord AB at M, where M is the midpoint of
chord AB. CM=6cm and MD = 2cm.

Theorem 4.10 : Equal Chords, Equidistant from center Theorem

If two Chords in a circle are equal in length , then they are

equidistant from the center.
Theorem 4.11 : Chords Equidistant from center equal in length
Theorem
If two Chords in a circle are equidistant
from the center , then their lengths are
equal.
Example 1: In the figure, is the center of the circle. M and N are lying
on chords AB and BC, respectively, such that OM AB,
ON CB and OM = ON . If AB = 14, find the length of BN.
Example 1: In the figure, is the center of the circle and 10cm is the
radius . Chords AB and CD, are perpendicular to each other
and intersect at E. It is given that AB = 16 cm and BE = 2 cm.
