CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the writer presents background of the study, problem of the

study, significance of the study, and the definition of the key terms.

A. Background of the Study

Language is a system of conventional spoken or written symbols used by

people to communicate with each other. Language plays an important role in

human life. People need language to communicate, to do interactions, to share

information and to get information from everyone. According to (Dunst et al.,

2007), language is a system of sounds, words, and pattern used by human to

thoughts and feeling. (Sapir, 1921) states, language is a purely human and non

instinctive method of communicating ideas, emotion and desire.

According to George (2006), “sentence is a group of words that is used to

say something, to ask something, or to tell somebody to do something”. Usually

sentence consists of a subject and a verb, it means that in order to create sentence,

there must be at least one subject and one verb.

One form of literature is song lyric. Song lyric is like a poem that is a part

of the literary work which has the intrinsic elements like poetry. It is expressing a

person’s personal feelings and thoughts, and connected to written for, singing. It

is also a kind of poetry which is generally short and characterized by a musical

use of language. It is the name for a short poem, that is usually divided into

stanzas and directly expressing the poet’s own thoughts or sentiments. It is the
word of a song and it is an important part in the creation of a song because song

lyric is a tool that can be used to express ideas and feelings of the songwriter

Language can also be expressed in music. Nowadays, music plays

important role in human being life because every human being life filled with

tension. In that situation people want to relaxation their mind, so in that

movement to listen any type of music it gives relief to their minds

According to Jeff (2009), “music is not something found in the natural

world, like air or sand; rather, music is something that people make. As we have

seen that every country has different types of music”. There are many types of

music in the world such as rock, jazz, pop, and rap. In every country has own

traditional music. Western music has a lot famous singer, like Britney Spears,

Coldplay, and Westlife. By listening to the music, it can touch our heart when we

enjoy it. Every song has a different lyrics, music can arise the feeling of love,

sadness or happines This time, people can speak and deliver message through

song. Someone could share his thought or his message through song and other

people can know his feelings from listening to his song. Songs can have a lot of

themes such as love, friendship, or social so that writer’s or singer’s feeling can be

expressed well.

In religion language, and more specific in language can be applied into

specific use, for example church song or hymn that is used in praying function.

Church songs are actually a specific application of language that is used by the

prayers to show many intentions inside, generally done by the speakers prayers to

the God. In church song, language is applied in many meanings that state the
believing of prayers to the God about many intentions. For example, praising,

there are many church songs contain the intentions of praising that the prayers in

the church use the songs for praise the God. In the title of church songs, there are

many intentions that want to be conveyed to God by the song creators. The

intentions of the title of the songs are expressed indirectly by using many kinds

expressions. For example, the creators of the songs want to praise, apologize, beg,

surrender, etc to God by the song that in small scope can be show by the title.

As we know, song is a part of an art. Song is a part of music with words

that are sung to express the thoughts and feelings. Song has two elements, such as

music and lyrics. Song lyrics can be from a poem. Poem or song lyric is one of

literaly works that people usually want to analyze its message and language style

or figurative language. Song usually consists of figurative language. Knowing the

meaning of a lyric is important because we will know the meaning of the song.

In this research, the writer analyzes figurative language in song lyric of

Rachel Platten’s song, titled Stand By You. Rachel Platten is a famous American

singer and songwriter. She was born on May 20, 1981 in New York City. She has

born with the birth name of Rachel Ashley Platten. Genre of her music are pop

and indie pop. She is best known for her singles ‘Fight Song’, ‘Better Place’ and

‘Stand by You’ as well as for her album ‘Wildfire’. As a singer and songwriter,

she has mission to connect people through her music and also to inspire people

through music. She also became an activist to campaign anti-bullying and anti-

depression through her song ‘Fight Song’.

few times to make an idea clearer and more memorable.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. REVIEW OF RELATED STUDY

There were some researches of analysis of song lyrics that has been done

by some researchers. To avoid the similarity between this research and the other

research, the writter will review some of previous researches. The following is the

previous research the writer found.

B. REVIEW OF RELATED THEORIES

1. Yunidar and Ulinsa, 2017 Islamic Religion Value on the Liric Text of

Kaili Pop Song Regional Review of Literature in Islamic Education.

The data of this qualitative research is the text of the lyrics of Kaili pop

song. The data source of this research is Kaili songs obtained through

audiovisuals in the form of cassettes or CDs. Data were collected

through documentation study. The text of the song’s lyric was

transcribed into the data card sheets and coded according to the focus

of the research. The data transcription is analyzed in accordance with

the steps of analysis proposed by Ricoeur consisting of (1) semantic

understanding stage, (2) reflective understanding stage, and (3)

existential understanding stage.

2. Kembang Ayu Agustya , Udi Utomo, Triyanto Triyanto, 2020,

Religious Messages in Rapa’i Tuha Aceh Song Lyrics Data collection

techniques were using observation, interviews and documentation.

Data analysis procedures were carried out through data reduction,

presentation and verification. Data validity used triangulation of data

sources, methods and theories. Analysis of religious messages in song

lyrics in Rapa’i Tuha music used communication analysis by Effendy,

namely the presence of messages and communicators, recipients of

messages and the presence of media. The results of this study indicated

that the Rapa’i Tuha contains religious messages namely the message

of faith and the message of morals. Specifically, the findings in this

study were that there was a message of faith which means everything

that should be trusted, believed and faithful as a Muslim. As well as

moral messages which are reflected in the behavior patterns of our

fellow human beings where all of these religious messages are

contained in song lyrics in Rapa’i Tuha Aceh music.

3. Ida Bagus Nyoman Mantra, Ida Ayu Made Sri Widiastuti, 2018

The lyrics of Balinese religious songs are literary works containing the

traits of lyrical poems that are very beautiful and full of meaning. This

study revealed that the lyrics of Balinese religious songs contain

microstructure, macros structure, and superstructure. The results of this

study provide clear pictures of what religious values are actually in the
lyrics of Balinese songs which can be utilized as guidance in

establishing a harmonious society.

C. THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

1. Definition of Song Lyrics

a. Definition of song

Song is short of music with words that be sung.( Oxford

Learner, 2000) Song is a short musical work set a poetic text with

equal importance given to music and to the words. It may be

written for one or several voices and it is generally performed with

instrument accompaniment. Song is an interesting media that offers

the high imagination.

The language song usually easy to be understood. It gives

motivation and makes the relation between the teacher and students

closer. And the relation will make the students have bravery to ask

the teacher about everything including new vocabularies in song

that they learn. Siti Tarwiyah states that song in foreign language

classes maybe use to motivate students and to create a more

relaxing foreign language classes.(Zahro’, 2010)

The definition of song from the different sources gave the

similar explanation. According to Oxford pocket Dictionary

(2000:412), “Song is short piece of music with words that you

sing. And, song in general is music for singing”. Oxford Advance

Learner’s Dictionary (1133), explain that “song is a peace of music

with words that is sung”. It may be written for one or several

voices and it is generally performed with instrumental

accompaniment.

According the free dictionary (2011), “Song is a piece of

music, usually employing a verbal text, composed for the voice,

example one intended for 20 performance by a soloist”. According

Wikipedia (2011), in music, a song is a composition for voice or

voices, performed by singing. A song may be accompanied by

musical instruments, or it may be unaccompanied, as in the case of

a cappella songs. The lyrics (words) of songs are typically of a

poetic, rhyming nature, though they may be religious verses or free

prose.

From the definitions of song above, the researcher can say

that song is a peace of music that can be sung. Sometimes, it is

voiced and sung by solo singer, a duet, trio, or large ensemble

involving more voices. Song and music are in one unity, it means

that song and music have a close relation. They cannot be separate

each other. Music is an arrangement of sound which followed the

song is sung

Song is a kind literary work that is sung by human voice and

accompanied by other musical instruments. Unlike another literary

works such as prose, short story, everything is written, song has its

own characteristic that is to be sung after written by a lyric form.

Furthermore, with song people would caught the meaning and

expression that the singer wants to convey easily

b. Definition of Lyrics

Lyric come from Ancient Greece has means a piece for

single voice, to be accompanied by the lyre. The song lyric is

specifically intended for singing. This intention affects diction,

content and stanza form. The song lyric is particularly unified and

simple. A tune has its own emotional character, and it is words will

need to be of words and music1 . Song lyric is the verbal symbol

that created by human. Human is the creature that knows how to

react not only in the physical environment but also in the symbols..

Lyrics are set of words that make up a song. Lyric can be

studied from an academic perspective. Lyric can also be analyzed

with respect to sense of unity it has with its supporting music.

( Http//wilkimedia//song lyrics. acceced 16/02/21) Lyric is simple

word of song. The lyric or song texts do not only as a complement

of the song, but also as an important part of the music elements

which determine the theme, character and mission of the song. It

can also make sense be stable. To know the sense of the song, we

can feel the rhythm and melody, harmony and voice of the singer

by the singing of the song.

According to Silvian B., William Bruto, and James Joyce

(2006: 697), a lyric is a song accompanied by a lyre. It is short, and

it usually expressed a single emotion such as joy or sorrow. Rees

(1973: 75) states that a lyric is now the name for a short poem, that

is usually divided into stanzas and directly expressing the poet’s

own thoughts or sentiments.

Suharto’s stated in his journal entitled Music and Language:

A Stress Analysis of English Song Lyrics that lyric is simply words

of a song. Lyric roles are not only as a complement of the song but

also as an important part of the musical elements, which

determines the theme, character, and mission of the song. Lyric

actually denotes non-musical element of a music song. However, it

gives the song a new unique dimension and enriches its music

performance. It is a part of the song, which has an important role to

express a composer’s feeling. The lyric is now used for any short

poem with a single speaker, not necessarily the poet itself, who

expresses personal thought and feelings rather than public events

A music composition is not always a sequence of melody

with a lyric. The composition without a lyric on its melody called

an instrumental music. On the contrary, the one with lyric is called

a song. The music composition performed by a song contains an

attractive aspect. The attractive aspect is language. The language

which consists of a sequence of words, give new dimension of the

music, which cannot be found in the other composition,

instrumental music.
The lyric in a song is actually non musical aspect. However,

besides giving new unique dimension, its presence in music is not

only as an embedded element but also as a part of the music. Many

songs are created from text or beautiful poem.

Basically a lyric of song is the same as lyric of a poem. The

difference is that a lyric of a song is written and combined with

music. We usually meet a poem as word on page and a song

generally hear as sounds in the air. However we can say that a song

lyric are same. A song lyric describes and show felling, experience,

imagination and etc and a poem lyric does too.

From the explanation above, the researcher can conclude

that lyric is simply words of a song and becomes a part of the song,

which is usually divided into stanzas and directly, expressing the

poet’s own thoughts or feeling. Lyric becomes an important part of

the musical elements, which determine the theme, character, and

mission of the song. It is a part of the song, which has an important

role to express the composer’s feeling.

2. Moral Values

According Ursery moral values are the people beliefs about what

is important in life.( Danney. 2002) Some values refer to how one

should act such as become honest, altruistic, self-discipline while other

moral value to what one wants to accomplish or obtain in life. Moral

values are quite or not specific about what should be done. It is general
beliefs or attitudes about something the people desire or like Bertens

theory moral value is value that must be separated with other values.

( Bertens, K. 1997) Every value will get quality if it has relation with

other values. Moral values are characterized they are Responsibility,

Conscience, Obligation, Formality.

a. Responsibility

Moral values related to the human person who is responsible.

A moral value only is realized in actions that are fully the

responsibility of the person concerned. Humans themselves

become a source of moral values.

b. Conscience

Value always contains some sort of invitation or appeal.

Moral value is that only raising the value of the voice of

conscience that accused persons when underestimate or against

moral values and praised us when realizing moral values.

c. Obligation

These values apply to humans as humans. Expected and even

demanded that everyone uphold moral values and practice. Moral

obligation does not come from the outside or institutions but is

rooted in people's own humanity.

d. Formality

Moral value is not stand-alone without other value. Moral

values did not separate with other values. Moral values are nothing

10 without other values. It is form of formality. Max Scheler

mentioned in Bertens that moral values “get a lift” to other values

(Bertens K, 1997)

Religion also gives manycontributions in moral values

development. Someone who has religion, they should control their

act and attitude because in the Holy Qur’an there are prohibitions,

commands, and punishment. Barcalow suggest that many people

appeals to God’s Law the ultimate test of right and wrong. It can be

understood that religion is a foundation of moral values (Emmet,

1994)

a. Types of Moral Values

subject for philosophic mediation in regard to ethical

problems. Love, as one of the powerful of human impulses,

a tendency to look at the bright side of any situation and

expect the best possible outcome from any series of events.

Optimism is powerfully motivational; it is one of the

cornerstones of success.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter defines research method that used in the study to investigate the

issues raised in the research question. It contains research type, research design,

role of the researcher in the study, source of the data, data collection procedure,

data analysis, method for verification of the research findings.

A. Research Design

The study will use the qualitative design as the approach to collect,

analyses and write the report. Cresswell suggest qualitative approach is also as

the assumption that the researcher is primary instrument for data collection

and analysis. The researcheer physically goes to site to observe the natural

setting and understanding gained through word.

According to Denzin and Lincoln, qualitative research is the research

which uses scientific background to interpret the phenomenon which

happened and the researches have involved other method. According to

Moleong, the methods of qualitative research usually use interview,

observation, and documentation. In other word, this analysis in the qualitative

research concerns in understanding the result of finding data rather than

calculate the result of data.

This study used qualitative method because the purpose of this research

is to describe and analyze the study of religiousity in stand by you lyrics.

B. Subject Of The Study

In qualitative studies, the human investigator is the primary instrument

for the gathering and analyzing of data. Lincoln and Guba introduced the

concept of human as instrument to emphasize the unique role that qualitative

researchers play in their inquiry. Because qualitative research studies human

experiences and situations, researchers need an instrument flexible enough to

capture the complexity of the human experience, an instrument capable of

adapting and responding to the environment. Qualitative inquiry relies on

fieldwork methods (interviewing, observation, and document analysis) as the

principal means of collecting data, avoiding the use of paper-and-pencil tests,

checklists, mechanical instruments, and highly structured observational

protocols.

C. Object of The Study

“Stand By You” is a single by American singer and songwriter Rachel

Platten. The song was released on September 11, 2015 under Columbia

Records. “Stand By You” was added in Rachel Platten’s major label debut

studio album titled Wildfire on 2016.

“Stand By You” was written by some famous composers, they are Jack

Antonoff, Joy Williams, Matt Morris, and John Levine. Rachel Platten also

participated to be one of the songwriters. This song was composed by John

Levine. Jack Micheal Antonoff is American singer, musician, songwriter, and

record producer. Antonoff has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award

and has won three Grammy Awards, two of which were for his involvement in
Fun, his indie-rock band, and ones for production on Taylor Swift's album

1989.

Joy Elizabeth Williams is an American singer-songwriter, same as

Rachel Platten. She won four Grammy Awards and has released solo albums

and four EPs (extended play) since 2001. With John Paul White, she formed a

rock duo called The Civil War in 2009, but they decided to split up in 2014.

Matthew David Morris or Matt Morris is an American producer and

songwriter. He once released his solo project, but he known as a songwriter

and producer for another artists such as Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson,

and Christina Aguilera. Morris blogged about his religious journey under the

name Teo Bishop from 2009 to 2014 and began writing the blog Faith and

Formation on 2015.

The main producer of single “Stand By You” is John Levine. John

Levine is a Canadian producer, songwriter, and a former member of The

Philosopher Kings, a Canadian band who commercially successful on the late

of 1990’s. Levine produced Rachel Platten’s album "Wildfire" including hit

singles "Fight Song" and "Stand By You" which sold over 4 million combined

copies. Levine also wrote and produced songs for another artists such as Dua

Lipa, Little Mix, and Drake.

With single “Stand By You”, Rachel Platten proves once again that she

has strong position in the music industry. “Stand By You” ranked on the first

place of Adult Top 40 Billboard Chart in US in 2016 and ranked on top ten of

another Billboard chart in US and Canada at the year. She also achieved
Platinum sertificate Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and

Recording Industry Association of American (RIAA) for her single “Stand By

You”

D. Source Of The Data

In this study, the materials from books, journal, and in the internet.

Whereas this study was literary study, they were considered as the material of

the research. The researcher used documentation method that was taken from

primary and secondary data. Those are :

a. Primary data source

Primary data by Siswantoro is data selection or obtained directly

from the sources without any intermediaries. Primary data is written on the

data collection and analyzed functionally related to the role or function in

the structure of poetry .

b. Secondary data source

Secondary data is the data that obtained indirectly or through an

intermediary . Secondary data by Siswantorois recorded on the data

collection and functioned to reinforce the validity of the primary data. It is

data source which is used to support and complete the primary data is

taken from books, journal, and relevant materials to support study

E. Data Collection Procedure

The method of collecting data is the way which can be used by the

writer to collect the data. In collecting data, the writer utilized the

documentation method. According to Arikunto, study document is acquiring

a data about case, book, transcript film, magazine, or newspaper. To collect

the data, the writer needs some procedure. These steps are:

1) Finding Data The writer finds the data from Platten’s Stand by You. Then

the writer discovers the data which are analyzed and put them as the data.

2) Data Listing After collecting the data the writer identifies the appropriate

and inappropriate data, the researcher listed them based on list a song in

album. This is done in order to easier in classifying data.

3) Data Classification After making a list of data, the writer classified all of

the data based on the types of moral values and the literary elements.

F. Data Analysis Procedure

Tesch in analyzing the data there are eight steps engage a researcher

in systematic process analyzing textual data, steps to consider. Read throughly

all of the transcriptions carefully. (Crasswell, 1994:155)

1) Pick one document and ask what it is about.

2) When the researcher has completed the ask, make a list of all topics.

3) Take the list and go back to the data, Abbreviate the topic as codes.

4) Reducing the total list of categories by grouping topics that related to each

other.

5) Make a final decision on the abbreviation for each category.

6) Assemble the data material belonging to each category in one place and

perform a preliminary analysis.

7) If necessary, record the researcher existing data.

Based on it, the writer will use the technique of data collection are

through several steps are follows:

a. Read and understand the lyrics of the song.

b. Classify each lyric in a song by categories contained in the moral value

c. Separating each of the lyrics in the song according to the type of moral

values contained in the lyrics.

d. Performed an analysis of each song which has been classified by the type

of moral values contained in the lyrics.

G. Data Endorsment

The verification of the study is to acknowledge of the qualitative data

which is acceptable in the public showing. According to Lincoln and Guba On

Kuntjojo (2009: 54-55) the level of confidence in the research result can be

achieved, if the researcher holds on four principles of criteria, namely:

credibility, dependability, conformability, and transferability.

1) Credibility

Credibility refers to whether the truth is qualitative can be trusted,

the meaning can reveal the reality. To fulfill these criteria, researcher

needs to conduct triangulations, member check, interview or observation

continuously until it reaches the level of redundancy.

2) Dependability

Principle dependability refers to whether the result of the research

has reliability. This principle can be fulfilled by protecting the consistency

of data collection techniques, the use of concept, and make interpretation

of the phenomenon.

3) Conformability

Conformability principle refers to the critical need effort to confirm

that the findings have been obtained be credible.

4) Transferability

Transferability principle implies whether this research can be

organized or applied to other situations.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS AND FINDING

This chapter consists of the analysis which aims to answer the research

question. Based on the research question, this chapter is devided into three parts.

In the first part, the researcher analyzes the pattern of repetition that used in Stand

By You song lyric. In the second part, the researcher examines the sense of heaven

and hell in Christian thought. In the third part, the researcher disscusses the

religiousity that portrayed in Stand By You.

A. Religiousity Portrayed In Platten’s Stand By You

As the writer told in previous chapter, moral values are the standards

that help us determine what kinds of action are proper and worthwhile and

which are not, what is right and what is wrong, and what is good and what is

bad. In the Thank You Allah song lyrics the writer found the Religiousity

Portrayed delivered by the singer. The analysis based on the kinds of

Religiousity Portrayed.

Rachel Platten as the singer and songwriter of Stand By You was born in

Christian family and being active to work for charity from the beginning of

2000’s until now. She often wrote a song that can give good impact for others.

In Stand By You, Platten used a lot of repetition, especially in the chorus part.

Hands, put your empty hands in mine And scars, show me all the scars
you hide And hey, if your wings are broken
Please take mine so yours can open too 'Cause I'm gonna stand
by you Oh, tears make kaleidoscopes in your eyes And hurt, I know
you're hurting, but so am I And, love, if your wings are broken Borrow
mine 'til yours can open, too 'Cause I'm gonna stand by you

This lyrics contain a storyline of hope as she reaches out to her fellow

underdog and offers a hand. She uses persuasive language and repetiton for

the sentence “Cause I’m gonna stand by you”. This repetition aims to

persuade and convince the listeners. Rachel tries to give reasons and

justification to make the listeners believe her point of view, that everyone is

not alone and someone will be there, stand with us.

Even if we're breaking down,

We can find a way to break through Even if we can't find heaven, I'll walk
through hell with you Love, you're not alone, 'cause I'm gonna stand by you
Even if we can't find heaven, I'm gonna stand by you Even if we can't find
heaven, I'll walk through hell with you Love, you're not alone, 'cause I'm
gonna stand by you

In those lyrics, Rachel represents up and down life through heaven and

hell. She wants to draw a picture of bad and down condition in life as hell and

good life as heaven.

Even if we can't find heaven, I'm gonna stand by you

Even if we can't find heaven
I'll walk through hell with you
Love, you're not alone
'Cause I'm gonna stand by you

In relation to those previous points analysis, it is clearly that religiousity

is portrayed in Stand By You song lyric. As a Christian, Rachel Platten also

believes about Heaven and Hell. That’s why she uses Heaven and Hell to

represent sides of human life.

Even if we can't find heaven, I'll walk through hell with you.
Through that lyric, the reseacher finds that Rachel tries to represent a

good, beautiful, and best side of life as Heaven. She represents bad condition

or worst side of life as Hell. She tries to tell everyone that she will be on their

side no matter what. Even if we cannot experience a good life (Even if we

can't find heaven), she will be there to help and accompany us to go through

bad conditions in our life (I'll walk through hell with you).

The researcher finds that Rachel Platten uses Heaven and Hell as diction

in her lyrics because she believes that happiness and good things that

happened in life are same as in heaven. Also sorrow and desperate feeling in

life are same in hell.

A belief in an afterlife should be an important part of the Christian

tradition. Christian beliefs about life after death are based on the resurrection

of Jesus Christ. Although physical death still happens, those who believe in

Christ and live good lives will be given eternal life in Heaven. On the other

hand, those who live bad lives and not believe in God will be given pain and

suffering life in Hell.

Christian theology sees Hell as a logical consequence of using free will

to reject union with God. Hell described as a place of eternal fire that

symbolised pain and suffering. How Christian described Hell is really

different from how they described Heaven. Christians believe that after death,

they will be taken into the presence of God and they will be judged for the

deeds they have done or failed to do during their lifetimesee. The Orthodox

sees concept of life in heaven as "…a place of light, a place of green pasture, a
place of repose, from whence all sickness, sorrow and sighing are fled away".

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS

After getting the overall results in this chapter, it will be discussed related

to the conclusion that Through these lyrics, researchers have found that Rachel

tries to represent the good, beautiful, and best side of life as Heaven. In addition,

it also represents the bad conditions or the worst side of life as Hell. The

conclusion he reached was that he was trying to tell everyone that he would be on

their side no matter what. Even if we can't experience the good life (Even if we

can't find heaven), he will be there to help and accompany us through the bad

conditions in our life (I will walk through hell with you).

Besides that, another conclusion that can be drawn is that Rachel Platen

uses Heaven and Hell as diction in her lyrics because she believes that happiness

and good things that happen in life are the same as in heaven. Also sadness and

feelings of hopelessness in life are the same in hell. Belief in life after death

should be an important part of the Christian tradition. Christian beliefs about life

after death are based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Although physical death

still occurs, those who believe in Christ and live a good life will be granted eternal

life in Heaven. On the other hand, those who live a bad life and do not believe in

God will be given the pain and suffering of living in Hell.
