Connected Speech Worksheet

This document discusses connected speech in English. It explains that in English, the last sound of one word can link to or blend with the first sound of the next word. As an example, it notes that in the phrase "The world is big," the "d" sound at the end of "world" links to the "is" sound to make the sound "/dis/." The document provides examples of phrases where linking occurs like "come in" and "safe flight." It instructs learners to choose phrases to practice, find examples of them being used in connected speech on YouGlish, and then record themselves saying the examples.

Connected Speech Worksheet

If you don’t watch a video yet, watch a video first! It will give you the basic information about linking!

What is Connected Speech?

• Connected Speech is the shortcut to produce one sound to the next sound!
• There are three types of common patterns, but we focus on LINKING in this
practice.

Let’s compare the sound system in Japanese and English!

When you speak Japanese, you pronounce each sound of words separately.
In a sentence “世界は大きいです,” you will say “Sekai • wa • ookii • desu” like below;

世界 は 大きい です。
Sekai wa Ookii Desu.

Next, let’s look at a sentence in English “The world is big.”

If you apply the Japanese sounds system, you would say;

The World Is Big.

Each sound has the same length of time and emphasis.

In contrast to the Japanese sounds system, the last sound of one word tends to link to or
blended with the first sound of the next word in English.

The W o r l d Big.
i s

Comparing to the Japanese sounds system, English has sentence stress and linking.
In this case, “d” is linked to “is” and make /dis/ sound.

Connected speech is everywhere!!!
