1. What is history?

How is your understanding of history different from what is explained

in this module?

History is the past of mankind. It tells stories that are proved by the sources. As I read
the module, my understanding of history is different from what I thought it used to be. I
thought history shall always remain in the past. Little did I know that history explains what is
happening in the present. Like the existence of ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines. It’s
not just telling a story, it inspires us and explains to us why do we have a brown color. to sum
it up, it answers the existence of mankind.

2. What role does history take in the study of Philippine society, culture, and identity?
History creates a national identity by means of explaining our race, the roots of our
ancestors, and such. It creates historical consciousness so that we would become proud of
our race and love our country.

3. Can we consider all the events that happened in the past as part of history? Explain
your answer.
Yes, all events in the past that are backed by sources are part of history. If we’re
looking at the definition of history, it is already stated that history is the past of mankind. So all
the events that were happened in the past are part of history because history tells the past.

4. What is important in history aside from knowing the basic information about events?

History tells everything. It tells our existence and it creates a national identity for the
people so that these people would love this country and their race. It is important that we
should study history so that we will become aware of the existence of mankind.

5. Is it true that Filipinos have no sense of history? Prove your answer.

If we’re looking at today’s situation, then I must say yes. Let’s take for example the
Marcos issue. People seem to forget the evil deeds of President Marcos. Filipinos do not
depend on the primary sources and instead believed in hearsays. With that being said, I must
say that Filipinos seem to have no sense of history at all. We believed in lies and we don’t
trust historians.
SOURCES:

1. What is the distinction between primary source and secondary source?

Primary sources are created by people who directly experienced the certain event in
history while secondary sources are created by people who did not directly experience the
event being studied.

2. In writing history, what kind of sources would make a historical writing credible? Why?
Actually, they are all credible but the question is, are those sources proved to be real or
it’s just merely fake. Primary sources are credible but in order to create a credible writing you
must consider its authenticity.

3. What is the purpose of secondary and tertiary sources?

Secondary and tertiary sources introduce historical information on its readers and it
makes easier for someone who seeks that information.

4. Explain why understanding internal criticism is important in analyzing historical

sources?
Internal criticism checks the reliability of the source. It also checks the source if it has
biases.

5. Why should official records of the government be made accessible to the public?
Because the public has the right to check it in order to assess the government’s
transparency. People have the right to get information in regards to public concern (Article II,
Bill of Rights).
