1. Why is milk important to us?


Ans. Milk is important to us because it is a good source of protein and calcium.
2. What are deficiency diseases?
Ans. The diseases caused due to lack of essential nutrients in our food for a long
period of time are called deficiency diseases.
3. How is goitre caused?
Ans. Goitre is caused due to lack of iodine.
4. i. What type of food should we eat to avoid deficiency diseases?
Ans. In order to avoid deficiency diseases we should eat a balanced diet regularly.
ii. Why should we take a diet rich in vitamins C and D?
Ans. We should take a diet rich in vitamins C and D because of the following reasons:
Vitamin C is required for healthy gums, teeth, bones, to fight against diseases.
Vitamin D is required to absorb calcium for good bones and teeth.
5. Write any three functions of water in our diet.
Ans. The three functions of water are-
i. It dilutes our blood and helps to remove body wastes (excess salts) in the
form of sweat.
ii. It regulates our body temperature.
iii. Food is transported in liquid form to the body cells.
6. What is a balanced diet and why is it important?
Ans. A diet that contains carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and roughage
in proper proportions is called a balanced diet.
It is necessary for the growth of the body and maintenance of good health.
7. What is PEM? How is it caused?
Ans. PEM is Protein Energy Malnutrition. If a person consumes insufficient amount of
protein for a long time, he/she suffers from PEM.
8. Observe the diagram and answer the following questions-
i) Which nutrient is available in these food item?
Ans. These food items (milk and egg) contain protein.
ii) What is the role of this nutrient in our body?
Ans. Proteins are responsible for growth of our body.
iii) Name two diseases caused due to deficiency of this nutrient.
Ans. Marasmus and Kwashiorkor.
9.Observe the diagram carefully and answer the questions that follow.
i) Identify the nutrient in the given food samples.
Ans. Fats.
ii) List two more food items rich in this nutrient.
Ans. Nuts and meat.
iii)What will happen if a child is deprived of this nutrient since birth?
Ans. If a child is deprived of fats and the intake of proteins and carbohydrates is also
less since birth, the child may suffer from kwashiorkor.
iv)Write the symptoms of this disorder.
Ans. The symptoms of kwashiorkor are-
Swelling of legs, scaly dry skin, reddish hair, bulging bellies, lethargy.
10. Give reasons for the following-
1. Goitre is common among people living in Himalayan region in our country.
Ans. This is because the soil in the Himalayan region contains very little iodine &
deficiency of iodine causes goitre.
2. We should wash fruits and vegetables before cutting and peeling them.
Ans. This is done to remove chemicals on them and also to prevent the loss of water-
soluble vitamins.
3. Mother’s milk is the best diet for a new born baby.
Ans. This is because mother’s milk contains all the nutrients required by the new born
baby.
4.We need to include fruits and vegetables in our daily diet.
Ans. This is because fruits and vegetables are rich in minerals and vitamins which
protect us from various diseases.
5. A labourer needs more of energy giving food.
Ans. This is because he does more physical work.
11. Name two foods each rich in fats and starch.
Ans. The foods rich in fats are oil and nuts.
The food rich in starch are rice and potato.
12. What happens if a person doesn’t get enough proteins in his/her food for a long time?
Ans. The person will suffer from Marasmus.
13. Give two symptoms seen in a patient suffering from deficiency of iron in the diet.
Name the disease.
Ans. Due to deficiency of iron the person will suffer from anaemia. Its two symptoms are i.)
The person will become pale. ii.) He/she will get tired very soon.

Q14. What is the role of calcium in our diet?


Ans. Calcium is required for formation of bones and teeth.
