Lesson 1- Characteristics of Light
What’s In
Activity 1: Complete Me! - Complete the statement below by choosing the appropriate word found in the word box.
(see Module 4 Characteristics of Light pp. 4)
Word Box
Decibel intensity noise vibration energy longitudinal pitch volume
frequency louder vacuum water
1. The speed of the vibration is called _______________.
2. The loudness or softness of a sound is ____________.
3. Sound is a form of _____________.
4. A back and forth movement that produces sound is called a _____________.
5. Sound waves are _______________ waves.
6. The higher the amplitude, the ______________the sound.
7. The standard unit of sound is _______________.
8. Sound can travel in all media but not in ________________.
9. A distorted sound which is not pleasing to the senses is ________________.
10. The higher the frequency, the higher is the __________________of the sound produced.
What’s New
Activity 2: Observe Me! - Read the paragraph and answer the questions. (see Module 4 Characteristics of Light pp.
5)
A rainbow is a multicolored arc made by light striking water droplets. It is the result of the refraction and
reflection of light. Both refraction and reflection are phenomena that involve a change in a wave's direction. A refracted
wave may appear "bent", while a reflected wave might seem to "bounce back" from a surface or other wave front. The
appearance of a rainbow depends on where you're standing and where the sun (or other source of light) is shining.
The colors on a primary rainbow are always in order of their wavelength, from longest to shortest: red, orange, yellow,
