Instructions 1. All questions carry equal marks.

2. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
3. Attempt all questions.
4. Assume additional data if required

Q.01 a Differentiate the Pressurized and Non pressurized gating systems. CO2
b The casting product of size 150mmx210mmx120mm (LxBxH) it has hole of 100 mm. CO2
Calculate the dimensions of pattern used. Consider the shrinkage allowances to be
21mm/m.

Q.02 a A mold sprue is 20 cm long, and the cross-sectional area at its base is 2.5 cm2. The sprue CO4
feeds a horizontal runner leading into a mold cavity whose volume is 1560 cm3.
Determine: (a) velocity of the molten metal at the base of the sprue, (b) volume rate of
flow, and (c) time to fill the mold.
b What is permeability? Permeability is more important in the basic process of sand casting
than porosity. Give one important reason for this feature.

Q.03 a Explain the Reduced pressure Test. CO2

b ) The downsprue leading into the runner of a certain mold has a length = 175 mm. The
cross-sectional area at the base of the sprue is 400 mm2. The mold cavity has a volume =
0.001 m3. Determine (a) the velocity of the molten metal flowing through the base of the
downsprue, (b) the volume rate of flow, and (c) the time required to fill the mold cavity.

Q.04 a What is the Centrifugal casting? Explain the concept with neat diagram and give to CO2
practical example of products manufactured by this method
b An 92% Aluminum-8% Copper Alloy Casting Is Made In A Sand Mold Using A Sand Core
That Weighs 20 Kg. Determine The Buoyancy Force In Newtons Tending To Lift The Core
During Pouring.
