Child Sexual Exploitation and Grooming

Introduction
Sexual Exploitation is a real threat for children and young people of all ages and backgrounds. If often
involves situations and relationships where young people receive something in return for participating in
sexual activities. It can occur in person or online, sometimes the child or young person may not even
realize they are a victim.
Grooming is when a person engages in predatory conduct to prepare a child or young person for sexual
activity at a later time. It can include communicating and/or attempting to befriend or establish a
relationship or other emotional connection with the child or their parent/guardian.
Such acts are crimes against children and young people. Offenders can be any ethnic background; they
can be women, men and other young people. While any child can be victim to sexual abuse, children who
are vulnerable, isolated and/ or have a disability are much more likely to be victimized and are a
significantly over represented group.
We should be guided on how to identify and respond if ever a child or young person is being sexually
abused or exploited, children under 10 years old should be properly observed and carefully looked after
by their respective guardians. For children 10 years and above, should be overly aware of their
environment and practice personal safety, especially more on self-defense if it is deemed necessary.

Methods
The method used in gaining the information and context was through legit statistical research and
YouTube educational videos relating to our topic, we couldn’t get a hold of interviews or
questionnaires because of a few cases of Covid near both of our neighborhoods, the feedbacks
were taken from the responses in the comment section of the said videos.

A world wide effort to help prevent child abuse is underway. People, who are aware of possible sex
offenders and notable victims should immediately report to the authorities. More importantly, parents
should be mindful for their children’s wellbeing and safety all the time.

Conclusion
Although with the Pandemic going on, the case of Child Sexual Exploitation and Grooming won’t
instantly stop. We learned that such acts are very difficult to identify immediately, so much if we cannot
spot the offender directly and precisely. There are many departments that are actively on patrol for
instances for every locally, and there are guidelines for everyone to follow in case they are some, who are
aware of such offenses against the victim. Parental guidance is strongly advised for children and young
people.
