CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Solid waste is any solid material in material flow that is rejected by the society or community
producing it. And solid waste management it can be said as the removal of the rejected solid
material from the material flow pattern. Some of the solid wastes are like ashes, bulky waste,
rubbish and garbage which they come from the two major categories of solid waste biomedical
and municipal solid waste. And the reasons to why solid wastes are handled is due to public
health, environmental and social economic problems related to solid waste management. If not
handled with care this waste may potentially cause air, water and land pollution and other health
hazards

Solid waste management in Tanzania (collection, transportation and disposal) is a legally

obligation in accordance with the local government act 1982 section 55 (G) and the
environmental management act of 2014, effective and sufficient municipal solid waste
management is an essential to all public services of which should of profit and beneficial to the
urban residence. However due to the rapid increase and growth of urbans has resulted into
generating lots of solid wastes associated with the scarcity of funds the effectiveness of solid
wastes management has declined in urban areas, as due to these outcomes the government of
Tanzania through the local government have started looking into different approaches to face the
challenge such as a cooperate investment between the private and public sector into boosting the
funds for the purpose of solid waste management (NEMC 2012).

Another problem or say challenge between the cooperation and the joint between the public
sector and the private sector is the determining and identifying the role of the private sector and
the community in the efficiency of delivering services for waste management. (NEMC 2012)

 To determine the problem facing the solid waste management system.

1.3 Significance of the study

 To know different sources and types of wastes and their effects on human health and
environments.
 To know the function elements of solid waste management.

1.4 Scope

 Provide solution to the problem identified.
CHAPTER TWO

METHODOLOGY

2.1 Physical observation

It involves first hand data collection through site visiting and observing the real situation found in the site.
At Ardhi university observation was done to know the solid waste management system, sources of solid
waste, type of solid waste and disposal system.

2.2 Literature review

This was done by obtaining information from secondary source through reading books, past historical
reading, journals, magazines and articles so as to gain knowledge of solid waste management.

2.3 Material used

Material used in data collection at Ardhi university was

 Pens and pencil

 Notebook for recording some information from the field area and
 Camera for taking photos, existing situation concerning about the situation conditions.
 Hand-held GPS

2.4 Questionnaires

This was done through asking some experts who were at the site in order to know the number of
people and waste generated at the site.

3.2 Population

Ardhi university has about 5,524 people, due to the increase of some courses like Environmental
Laboratory Science and Technology (ELST) and Computer Systems and Networks (CSN). This
added population lead to the increase of solid waste generated at our university.

3.3 Sources of Solid wastes.

There are several sources of solid wastes at Ardhi university, the following are sources of solid
wastes in Ardhi university; -

 Domestic source
 Café-teria
