This podcast provides a 3-step process for evaluating functions: 1) Copy the given function, 2) Replace each variable with the assigned value, 3) Perform the operations in order. An example evaluates f(x) = 3x + 4 when x = 2, resulting in f(2) = 10. Listeners are prompted to evaluate g(x) = 1 – x + x2 when x = 3, with the answer being g(3) = 7. In the wrap-up, listeners are assigned two additional functions to evaluate on their own.

MATH-Buhay! This is Math-ivated for Grade 11, General

Mathematics. I am Teacher Precious, and I believe in the saying, “Your
future depends on what you do today, and your today has already started.”
Gentle reminders to all my Math-ivated learners. Prepare a paper
and a pen for you to write your answers or solutions for the problems later
on. And remember, you can always pause and play this podcast to clarify
some things for mastery purposes. So, get motivated and stay with me
because we are together in this wonderful journey.
Before we dig deeper about evaluation of functions, let’s recall
significant points about our first lesson, and that’s about functions. A
function is like a function machine because it relates the input to our
output. For example, you will put a strawberry in the machine and that
becomes our input. From that strawberry, it becomes an ice cream
popsicle and that is our output. The question is, what is in the function
machine that can change the input into our output? That’s right! Because
inside a machine there’s a rule. So, every time our input gets inside the
machine, it follows a rule that leads to our output. Remember our function
machine to recall the meaning of function.

PRESENTATION
Now, let’s proceed on evaluating functions. How can we evaluate a
function?

DISCUSSION
Evaluating function is the process of determining the value of the
function at the number assigned to a given variable. Just like in evaluating
algebraic expressions, there are 3 steps we need to follow. Step 1: Just
copy the given. Step 2: Replace each letter in the expression with the
assigned value and step 3: Perform the operations in the expression using
the correct order of operations.
Let’s evaluate this function. The given function is f(x) = 3x + 4, if
x=2. Another way of presenting the question if you’re ask to evaluate a
certain function is like this. Find f(2) if f(x)= 3x + 4. These two statements
are just the same so don’t be confuse. As I said a while ago, there are 3
steps to follow. Step 1, just copy the given. The given function is f(x)= 3x
+ 4. Step 2, we replace each variable with the assigned value. We
substitute the value of x, which is 2, with the given equation. So, we now
have f(2) = 3(2) + 4. Next, third step, perform the indicated operations.
That means, we multiply 3 and 2 on the right side of the equation so it
becomes f(2) = 6 + 4. Still, performing the indicated operation, which is
now addition. So, the result is 10. So, the final answer in this function is,
f(2) = 10. That’s how we evaluate this function if the value of x is 2. You
can revisit this part of this podcast if you want to clarify some things.

SKILL ENHANCEMENT
To make our understanding deeper, let’s have another example.
Evaluate the given function, g(x) = 1 – x + x2 when x=3. The choices are
a. g(3) = -11, b. g(3) = -7, c. g(3) =7 and d. g(3) = 11. Now, you may
pause this podcast and answer this question. You may do it now. Now,
let’s check your answer. The answer is, c. g(3) = 7. If you got the correct
answer, you need to congratulate yourself for doing a job well done. Great
job! So, the answer is 7. Why did we come up with that answer which is
7? Following the 3 steps in evaluating a function, step 1, just copy the
given function and that is g(x) = 1 – x + x2. After that, we replace or
substitute the value of x which is 3 on both sides so it becomes g(3) = 1 –
3 + (3)2. Step 3, we will perform the indicated operations. In correct order,
the parenthesis will be performed first. So, g(3) = 1 – 3 + 9. Still,
performing the operations, we can get the final answer. So, g(3) = 7.

WRAP-UP
With the given examples, I am sure that you can now evaluate a
function. Remember that evaluating a function needs just 3 steps. Step 1:
Just copy the given. Step 2: Replace each letter in the expression with the
assigned value and step 3: Perform the operations in the expression using
the correct order of operations. You also need to remember that it is
recommended putting the substituted values inside the parenthesis, so you
don’t make any mistakes.
Now, it’s your turn. I want you to evaluate this two functions. First,
f(x) = x2 – 3x when x = - 8 and the second function is g(x) = 2x + x2 – 2 if
x = 3. This time you can pause this podcast and copy the given functions
and answer it on your available time.
OUTRO
And that’s it. Good job for today and keep it up as we continue with
our next lesson. This has been your podcast teacher, Mrs. Precious Anne
Prudenciano, leaving you the message, there’s nothing too big or too small
because we will learn it all. Thank you my Math-ivated learners. See you
on the next episode. Bye-bye!!!
