Introduction

Buddy Rich’s Modern Interpretation ( 阐 释 演 绎 ) of Snare Drum Rudiments ( 入 门 ) is a

fudamental exercise program(基础的练习课程), designed to(设计为) emancipate(解放
释放) the musical mind(音乐头脑) of any inspired(有创建的 有灵感的) drum student
who is willing ( 愿 意 乐 意 ) to practice. The book is divided in ( 分 为 ) two different
sections(部分) —Stage One(第一阶段) : Non-Bounce Exercises, and Stage Two: Bounce
Exercises.

The Grip

The point of balance of the drumstick is referred to as (简称为) the fulcrum. For the purpose
of (目的)proper(合适的) development(发展), it is logical(逻辑上) that the thumb
and index fingers are used for the fulcrum.

Stage One:Non-Bounce Exercises

Lesson1--83

Classic training(传统的训练) of musician require(需要) slow, repetitive motion(反复练

习). Stage One of the Rich-Adler method instructs (指导) the student, in the classic sense
( 在 传 统 意 义 上 ) , to practice each rudiment at a very slow tempo without bouncing the
drumstick.

Practicing at a slow tempo enables (是可能) the student to carefully watch his hands while
absorbing(沉浸 融入) the rudimental exercise. Moving quickly within a slow tempo is what
takes place in(用于) the Stage One: Non-Bounce section(部分). This manner of(方式)
practicing develops(培养 形成) the movement of the hands, wrists, and forearms. Counting
out loud while keeping strict ( 严 格 的 精 确 的 ) time with a metronome will develop the
student’s internal clock(心拍), the most important of any musican’s development(培养).

It is imperative( 及 其 重 要 的 ) that Stage One is carefully practiced before Stage Two is ever
attempted(尝试过).

The Matched-Grip Technique

The most used(最常用的) and most coordinated(最协调的) fingers are the thumb and the
index. Connect the back of the thumb to the curved space (弯曲空间) between the first and
second knuckle of the index finger (see Figure 2). Now open the thumb from the index finger (see
Figure 3) and place the drumstick in position (see Figure 4). Don’t wrap the index finger around
(圈住) the drumstick. This connection 接头) is referred to as(简称为) the fulcrum, or
balance point. Being a non-bounce grip, the fulcrum is simply(仅仅) an inch or so down from
were the actual(实际上) balance point is located(已定位).
Turn the hand, plam up. Move the stick up so the butt end of the stick is at the tip of the little
finger (pinky 小指). hold the stick down so that it lies in(在里面) the “crotch”of the plam. Let
your other two fingers come in line on the stick. the pinky secures(固定) the stick to the hand,
making the hand and drumstick one unit(一体). try to hold the stick firmly, but relaxed.

Place the tip of the drumstick on the center of the parctice pad (see Figure 20). Be sure the pad is
neither too low nor too high. Adjust(调整) the pad so that your stick is slightly pointing down.
If you are using a pad with a rim, the stick should be only a couple of millimeters (几毫米)
from the rim. This is the down position. There should be a straight line from the tip of the
drumstick to the elbow(肘). there should be no bend(弯曲) in the wrist.

This non-bounce grip functions for a very specific(明确的 特殊的) reason. The fingers connect
the drumstick to the hand, making the sticks and hands function (作用 功能) togegher. this
eliminates(排除) the rebound, making the wrist work instead of the fingers or arms.

Watch your hands, not the notes in the book. As your hands become used to (习惯了) the
new routine(程序), you can begin sustaining longer practice sessions(保持较长的练习时
间 ) without being tense ( 紧 张 ) . Concentrate ( 专 心 ) on being relaxed. Practicing the
exercises on a daily basis will slowly develop the wrists while the student absorbs(吸收 吸引注
意) the eight-three rudimental lessons. When they are thoroughly exercised, the wrist will then
be ready for Stage Two: The Bounce.

Wrist Movement

As shown in Figures 18, 29, and 20, the wrist turns from the whole forearm(整个前臂). In the
same motion as jiggling a doorknob ( 转 动 门 把 手 ) , connect the thumb to the index finger
(Figure2). Now hold the stick as previously explained(以前解释过). turn the wrist as shown in
Figures 18, 19, and 20. As shown in Figure 20 , the thumb points slightly down as the stick strikes
the pad. the left hand turns opposite from(与之相对) the right hand.

As previously explained(以前解释过), place the sticks in the matched-grip position. From the
down position, turn the wrist of both hands to the up position (Figure 5). Be careful not to add
height to the wrist by bending ( 弯 曲 ) from the elbow. Both drumsticks should be equal in
height(等高). Remember to “check up” on erery point of the instructions (指令 教导),
before and during any exercise, until you are certain the non-bounce procedure(程序 步奏) is
correct in every way. You are now ready to begin the first stage of the book. Lesson 1 of the non-
bounce exercises with the matched-grip technique.

Stage two:Bounce Exercises

Lesson1—83
Now that you have carefully exercised and assimilated(吸收 消化)all of the eighty-three non-
bounce rudiment lesson, you are ready to continue developing your technique in Stage Two:
Bounce Exercise.

Matched Grip

First, find a place on the stick where, when held correctly, the stick bounces the most. To
achieve(获得) this, you must balance the stick on the index finger. Bit by bit (少量), add
weight ( 家 重 量 ) to the front of the stick (Figure 11). When you achieve the most bounce,
connect the thumb to the other side of the stick held by the index finfer (figure 12). Turn the
palm down and resume(恢复) the non-bounce position of the remaining(剩余的) fingers
but do not connect the stick to the underside of the hand.

Hold the stick in the same manner as (一同样的方式) the non-bounce grip. let the fingers
under the stick relax. The fingers are now around the stick, but do not continually attach (持续
的贴上) the stick to the underside of the hand (Figure 13 and 14).

Lesson 1
Development of the Hands and Wrist

In every drum rudiment, the important thing to remember is to make sure that the sticks are held
correctly. Before starting any exrcises, the student is advised to(被告知) “check up” not only
on the correct manner of(方式) holding the drumsticks, but also on the correct movement of
the hands, wrists, and arms.

Be sure(一定要) to carefully review(复习) the non-bounce instructions(教学) before

beginning. It is up to(这取决于) the individual(个人的) whether to start with traditional or
matched grip. If you are already using traditional grip, work through Stage One, then move to
Stage Two. Do the same if using matched grip. It is advised(建议), however(无论如何), to
perfect both traditional- grip and matched-grip styles utilizing (利用) Stage One, then Stage
Two.

Stage One: Non-Bounce

Each of the following exercises is to be practiced at a metronome setting of 40 beats per minute
(bmp). Each click is a consecutive(连续的 连贯的) downbeat (1-2-3-4). Begin with both hands
in the up position. When one hand is in motion the other hand is in the full-stroke position, ready
to go. Listen to the metronome for your cadence ( 节 奏 ) .Counting out loud, turn your
drumstick to the pad. This is an unassisted(独立的) drop, meaning the forearm will actually
relax, turning the stick to the pad without an accent. Tap your foot on the downbeat of beat one
of each measure only. Strike the pad in unison(一致) (at exactly the same time) with the click
of the metronome and your out-loud count. (this might take some practice if the studeng has not
worked with a metronome.) Pay attention to the sticking marks (L=Left, R=Right). Repeat, starting
with the left hand.

When you strike the pad, remember to simply(简单的 仅仅) drop the hand and stick without
any additional(额外的 附加的) force other than gravity(重力 地心吸引力). Immediately
after striking the pad, ‘’snap” the hand and stick back to the full-stroke position as fast as
possible. These non-accentde strokes must sound perfectly even (非常好), one hand to the
other. They are referred to as(被称为) normal or regular(正规的) strokes. Remember to
count out loud as you practice each exercise.

Stage Tow: Bounce

Set the metronome to around 120 bpm. Begin with both hands in the up position. When one
hands is in motion the other hand is in the fullstroke position, ready to go. Each tap must be a full
stroke and have equal volume—no accents. Again(另外), the wrists must relax, turning the
sticks in. The tapping stick will only be restricted by(受限于) the speed of your returning(返
回) wrist,Be careful not to exceed(超过 超出) the ability(能力) of your slower hand. The
foot taps on the downbeat of beat one. Watch your hands. Don’t let your finger open up (打
开 ) ; this would all but stop wrist movement. Practice bouncing each line for two or three
minutes at a time.

Lesson 2
Alternate Single Strokes

Alternate single strokes are used extensively in ( 广 泛 用 于 ) both rudimental and drumset
drumming. This method of alternating single strokes is commonly known as(俗称为) “hand-
to-hand” playing, and simply means that the hands alternate when striking the drum, each hand
playing a single stroke at a time (this describes clean(写的很清楚), uninterrupted(不间断的
single strokes, not accented(惯常的) duplet or triplet phrasings(变相)).

The single-stroke roll must be played perfectly even ( 相 当 好 ) in order to support rhythmic
structure(音律结构).To attain this skill(为了获得这一技能), the following exercises must
be practiced very slowly, the student bearing in mind(铭记) that the hands work in opposite
directions(相反的方向); that is, when one hand is moving toward the drum or pad, the other
is moving away at exactly the same speed.

Stage One: Non-Bounce

Set the metronome to 40 bpm. With both hands in the up position, turn the right wrist, dropping
the stick without accenting on the count of one. Allow the stick to rebound to a quarter stroke
position (see Figures 17 and 20 on page 10). At the count of two, snap the wrist, dropping the
stick without an accent to the pad. The left stick strikes the pad on the count of two and
rebounds to a quarter stroke. The hands are now moving in opposite directions(相反的方向).
Continue the metronome pace(速度), counting out loud (3, 4, etc.) See Figures 21-26.

Stage Tow: Bounce

The first part of the alternate single-stroke bounce is practiced in the same way as the previous
(如前所述) two lessons. Beginning with both hands in the up position, on the count of one,
tap the foot while dropping in the right hand. Bounce back to a completed full stroke. On the
count of two, repeat the same for the left hand, and so on.

As your speed increases ( 增 加 ) , you will notice the hands bouncing in exact opposite
directions(完全相反的方向). Stay relaxed. Maintain(保持) proper(合适的) grip and
wrist motion. You will perform(表现) relaxed if you practice relaxed.
