Advantages of Geneva Mechanism

The Geneva mechanism has several advantages: it is available in many sizes, maintains good control of its load, has low wear and tear leading to a long lifespan, and is simple and inexpensive. It can achieve sufficient time delays easily and has good motion characteristics compared to ratchets. However, it also has disadvantages: it produces jerk, all acceleration curves start and end with finite acceleration/deceleration, and the ratio of dwell to motion periods is fixed. Geneva mechanisms see applications in production and automotive industries for tasks like fast-forwarding film and limiting tension in mechanical watches. They can index assembly lines and change tools in CNC machines. The mechanism converts continuous driver motion to intermittent output motion via a cam and pin arrangement.

Advantages of Geneva Mechanism :

i) Available in a wide variety of sizes

ii) Maintains good control of its load at all times

iii) Minimal wear and tear leading to a long life span

iv) Geneva mechanism is simplest and least expensive of all intermittent motion mechanisms

v) Sufficient Time delay can be achieved easily

vi) Simple setup/installation in industry

vii)They have good motion curves characteristics compared to ratchets but exhibit more “jerk” or
instantaneous change in acceleration than better cam systems.

Disadvantages:

i) the Geneva is not a versatile mechanism and produce jerk

ii) all Geneva acceleration curves start and end with finite acceleration and deceleration

iii)

the ratio of dwell period to motion is also established. iv) All Geneva acceleration curves start and
end with finite acceleration & deceleration which means they produce jerk.

Applications

 It is applicable in the production industries and in automobile industries for mass

production.

 Modem film projectors may also use an electronically controlled indexing mechanism or
stepper motor. which alows for fast-forwarding the film.

 Geneva wheels having the form of the driven wheel were also used in mechanical watches.
but not in a drive, rather to limit the tension of the spring. such that it would operate only in
the range where its elastic force is nearly linear

 Indexing tables in assembly lines, tool changers for CNC machines, and so on.

Conclusion:
Geneva drive indexing mechanism converts the continuous motion of the driver wheel into
intermittent rotary motion of the gear. Cam with pin arrangement integrated with Geneva drive.
Input shaft having driver wheel at one end and cam drive at the other end. Geneva drive and gears
are mounted on the output shaft. By cam with Geneva drive arrangement the continuous motion of
the driver wheel converts into intermittent motion of gear and chain arrangement. Due to gear
rotation the conveyor belt moves and thus mechanism proves its significance.

Future scope:

Design optimization of a Geneva mechanism for internal combustion engine application.

Bottle indexing and filling mechanism

It can be used in pen changed mechanism in plotters

It has a great scope in automated sampling industries
