I. Learning Skills:
Explain the truism that design principles still apply for any new design
(contrast of color, shapes, and lines produces harmony) whether
done by hands or machine (computer)
Look at the artwork below. Can you see the difference? Can you
identify which one is done by hand and which one is done using a
computer software?
Elements of Arts
A. LINE
Line is the most familiar and often used element of art. It is the mark
left by a moving point. It can be straight, dotted, curved, zigzag,
etc.
Line also shows movement and emotions. Horizontal line often
implies relaxation or calmness. Vertical line show strength and
stability. Diagonal line suggests fast movement. Curve line imply
flowing movement.
SHAPE FORM
C. VALUE
Value deals with the lightness or darkness of colors or tones used
in an artwork.
Artists often use a value scale. It is technique used to arrange
values that range from lightest (white) to darkest (black)
D. Color
Color is the most eye-catching elements. It evoke emotions. Hues
are the names we call colors like red, blue, green, etc. The primary
colors are red, blue, yellow. These colors cannot be made by
mixing colors. However, the three primary colors can be mixed to
create all the other colors.
There is color that are not seen in the color wheel. These are
neutral colors like white, black, gray and brown.
Principles of Art
A. Balance
Balance deals with the arrangement of the elements in an
artwork. Symmetrical Balance is when one side mirrors the other
side. Asymmetrical Balance is not as obvious as symmetrical
balance.
B. Emphasis
Emphasis is achieved when there is a certain part of the artwork
that stands out from the rest. This is done by making the object
contrast the others through size, color, texture, shape among
others.
C. Harmony
Harmony is achieved by putting similar elements together to
emphasize their traits.
D. Variety
Variety is achieved by combining and contrasting the elements
together in an artwork.
E. Movement
Movement implies action. It is a visual path that guides the viewer
along the artwork. With the use of movement, the artwork
becomes more interesting keeping the viewers’ attention and
interest.
Whenever you create a design, all the elements and principles of art are
applied. Whether you do it manually or with help of a computer program, the
elements and principles are applied.
