8. PROCEDURES :
8.1 PREPARATION
1) Protect structures, utilities, sidewalks, pavements, and other facilities from
damage caused by settlement, lateral movement, undermining, washout, and
other hazards created by earthwork operations.
2) Preparation of subgrade for earthwork operations including removal of
vegetation, topsoil, debris, obstructions, and deleterious materials from ground
surface as specified in applicable local and international standards,
3) Protect and maintain erosion and sedimentation controls, as specified in Saudi
Aramco standards, during earthwork operations.
4) All parties shall ensure that the latest revisions of controlled IFC drawigns are
used.

and updated.
6) Maintain survey benchmarks and survey control points for the works as
indicated in the contract drawings.
1) Place backfill and fill soil materials in layers not more than 200 mm in loose
depth for material compacted by heavy compaction equipment and not more
than 100 mm in loose depth for material compacted by hand-operated
tampers per applicable in Saudi Aramco standards.
2) Fill and backfill adjacent to structures such as retaining walls, pits, and
basements, shall be compacted with hand-operated equipment to a distance
of 1.2 m or greater beyond the sides of the structure per applicable Saudi
Aramco standards.
3) Place backfill and fill soil materials evenly on all sides of structures to
required elevations, and uniformly along the full length of each structure.
8.6 GRADING
1) Uniformly moisten or aerate subgrade and each subsequent fill or backfill soil
layer before compaction to within 3 percent of optimum moisture content.
a) Do not place backfill or fill soil material on surfaces that are muddy or
contain debris.
b) Remove and replace or scarify and air dry otherwise satisfactory soil
material that exceeds optimum moisture content by 3 percent and is too
wet to compact to specified dry unit weight.
A. The Excess materials not suitable for refill shall be disposed of in the areas
directed by Saudi Aramco Representative.
B. Use surplus excavated material suitable for fill and remove excess materials
not being used to the designated Saudi Aramco dump site as per
specification (Section 02222, Sub-Sec:3.02-J)
C. A log shall be developed and maintained for all test records for traceability
and retrieval.
11. SAFETY:
1) The Contractor shall place and maintain in good condition temporary fences,
guardrails, barricades, lights, shoring, bracing, and other protective measures
required for the safety of personnel and the premises as described in the
Saudi ARAMCO Construction Safety Manual.
a) Required Permits and Procedures
i. All necessary permits must be obtained from Saudi ARAMCO prior to
performing any earthwork.
b) Excavation Safety
i. All excavation and trenching shall be done in accordance with Saudi
ARAMCO safety requirements including, but not limited to, the Saudi

iii. Precautions for Hazardous Atmospheres and Confined Spaces.
iv. Provision and maintenance of edge protection, clearances, barricades,
and fixed lighting.
v. Protection of underground utilities and installations.
vi. Protection against sidewall cave-in. Shoring shall be installed or the
sides shall be sloped or benched when any excavation or trench
reaches a depth of 1.2 m or when soil banks are greater than 1.5 m.
vii. Provision of proper inspection frequency and maintenance of daily
excavation checking list.
To prevent accident during the implementation of the above mentioned activities, all
relevant safety measures shall be strictly maintained by Safety Staff.
