DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN
GRADE 7 – EARTH AND SPACE

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the period, the students will be able to:
A. explain the greenhouse effect;
B. construct a model greenhouse; and
C. identify solutions to minimize the effects of global warming.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Concept: Interactions in the Atmosphere
B. Sub-concept: Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming
C. Materials: Power Point Presentation, Plastic Bottles and Thermometer
D. References:

II. LEARNING PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

A. ENGAGE
This morning we are going to play “Alive, 1st picture: GREEN
Alert and Awake”. I will be flashing pictures 2nd Picture: HOUSE
and once you know the answer don’t hesitate 3rd Picture: GASES
to stand and tell what you have observed. 4th Picture: TRAPPED
5th Picture: HEAT

B. EXPLORE
“MY MODEL GREENHOUSE”
I will divide the class into 2 groups. Each
group is given the materials to construct their
own greenhouse. Bring out your Science
Learner’s Material and read the Activity 2
pages 314-317.

C. EXPLAIN
Have you been trapped in an elevator or in a Suffocating and hot sir.
closed room? How did you feel?

Very good. Today we are going to know

deeper about greenhouse and its effect to us.

What does your graph in station 1 tells us? Set-up A and B are just representation of a
bigger picture which is our planet earth. In
set-up A wherein there are no vents, the
temperature continuously increases as it is
exposed to continuous heat.
Set-B on the other hand has vents which
allows the heat to escape therefore it is less
hot inside the set-up.

How a real greenhouse works? In temperate countries, greenhouse is used to

grow seedlings in the late winter and early
spring.
It also protect plants from weather
phenomena such snowstorm or dust storm.
In tropical countries, greenhouses are used in
commercial plant growers to protect
flowering and ornamental plants from harsh
weather and insect attack.

Greenhouses allow sunlight to enter but

prevent heat from escaping. The transparent
covering of the greenhouse allows visible
light to enter without obstruction.

What is greenhouse effect? It is a naturally occurring phenomenon in

which the atmosphere of the Earth traps heat
from the sun.

What would happen without the greenhouse? Earth would be very cold, too cold for living
things, such as plants and animals.

Do you think we can survive in Set-up A? No sir.

How about in set-up B? Yes, we can survive sir.

What do you think might happen to you in We will die.

set-up A?

What is the importance of atmospheric gases It keeps us warm.

in the atmosphere?

What are the other atmospheric gases and 1. Carbon Dioxide

how they are produced? Source: fossil fuel burning, deforestation,
kaingin
2. Methane
Source: Rice Cultivation, cattle and sheep
ranching, decay from landfills and mining
3. Nitrous Oxide
Source: Industry and agriculture (fertilizers)
4. Water Vapor
Source: Evaporation

As the carbon dioxide increases what will be We will experience extreme heat and we
the possible effect? might die. More carbon dioxide means that
more heat is trapped in Earth’s atmosphere.
More heat cannot return back into space.
More heat trapped by the carbon dioxide
means a warmer Earth.

Are we also contributing to the increase in Yes. Atmospheric CO2 increase is caused by
carbon dioxide concentration in the humans. Because humans are emitting CO2
atmosphere? Why or why not? at rate twice as fast as the atmospheric
increase. So CO2 increase is human-caused.

Which fossil fuel has the highest contribution Petroleum sir.

in the atmosphere?

How human activities use this fuel? Cite at 1. Burning of natural gas, coal, oil raises the
least three. level of carbon dioxide
2. Some farming practices and land-use
changes, increases the levels of methane and
nitrous oxide
3. Many factories produce toxic fumes; gases
do not occur naturally and hose gases
enhance the greenhouse effect.

How can you differentiate ozone depleting Ozone depletion is the thinning of our ozone
from global warming? layer due to depleting substances such as
CFCs. Global warming is the increase in
temperature of the atmosphere due to the
atmospheric gases.

D. ELABORATE
D1. Generalization

D2. Application
What are the effects of global warming? - Increased Temperature
- Rising Sea Level
- Habitat Damage and Species
Extinction
- Changes in Water Supply
- Contamination of Fresh Water
- More severe storms, hurricanes and
flood
- Droughts, changes in weather patterns
What do you think might happen to our
planet if we continue to release carbon We might die.
dioxide and other atmospheric gases?

Now that we’ve learn the effects of human

activities towards our planet. As students, Educate and use the alternative sources of
how can you protect our planet? What can energy such as wind and solar power.
you do to help? Use fuel efficient cars and compact
fluorescent.
Use less hot water.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Plant more trees.
Turn off electronic devices when not in use.
Spread awareness.
E. EVALUATION
Direction:
I. True or False. Analyze the statement carefully. Write T if the statement is correct and F if
the statement is incorrect.
1. Global Warming is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which the atmosphere of the
Earth traps heat from the sun.
2. Ozone layer is the thinning of our ozone layer due to depleting substances such as CFCs.
3. Global warming is the increase in temperature of the atmosphere due to the atmospheric
gases.
4. As the carbon dioxide increases, we will experience extreme heat.
5. Plant more trees to sustain a healthy greenhouse.

II. Fill in the blank. Add the following labels to the correct box on the diagram below.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answers in a ½ sheet crosswise.
To be passed tomorrow. (10pts.)

A. Follow-up Assignment
1. Cite human activities that can lead to ozone depletion.

B. Advanced Assignment
a. Topic: Atmospheric Phenomena
b. Guide Question:
1. Differentiate climate vs. weather.
2. What are the different atmospheric phenomena here in the Philippines?
