PS-I (UNIT-2)Assignment Questions

1. Compare the merits and demerits of underground system versus overhead system.
2. Compare merits and demerits of radial and ring main distribution System.
3. Give the classification of distribution systems and compare AC and DC distribution systems.
4. Explain about the different types of distribution systems.
5. Discuss about DC feeders fed from one end and both ends, with equal and unequal voltages. Give
their voltage characteristic.

6. A dc distributor cable is 1000 m long and is loaded as shown in Table1. The resistance of each
conductor is 0.025 ohms per 1000 (m). Find the voltage at each load point if the voltage at the
feeding point A maintained at 250V.

7. A 2-wire D.C distributor 300 m long is uniformly loaded with 2A/m. Resistance of single wire is 0.3 Ω
/km. If the distributor is fed at one end, calculate
(a) Voltage drop up to a distance of 225 m from the feeding point.
(b) Maximum voltage drop.

8. A 2 – wire D.C. distributor cable AB is 2.2 Km long and supplies loads of 25 A, 50 A, 75A at 0.4 Km,1Km
and 1.6 Km from the point A. Each conductor has a resistance of 0.05Ω/Km. Calculate the potential
difference at each point if potential difference of 400 volts is maintained at point A.

9. A DC ring main system ABCDA fed from point A with 200 V supply and the loop resistances of various
sections are AB = 0.1ohms; BC = 0.2ohms; CD = 0.2ohms and DA = 0.1ohms. The main supplies 90A at
B, 100A at C and 120A at D. Calculate the voltages at each load point. If the points A and C are inter
connected through a link of 0.12ohm. Determine the voltages at the load points.

10. A 400m long single phase AC distributor has a total impedance of (0.02+j0.04) ohms and is fed
from one end at 230V. It is loaded as follows: 50A at UPF, 200 m from feeding point, 80A at 0.8
p.f lag, 300 m from feeding point, 50A at 0.8 p.f lag at the far end. Calculate the total voltage
drop and voltage at the far end.

11. A DC ring main ABCDA is fed from point A with 230 V supply and the loop resistances of
various sections are AB = 0.04 ohms; BC = 0.35 ohms; CD = 0.5 ohms and DA = 0.05
ohms. The main supplies 100 A at B, 150A at C and 200 A at D. Calculate the voltages at
each load point. If the points A and C are inter connected through a link of 0.05 ohm.

12. A single phase distributor PQR fed at P. The power factors are lagging and expressed relative to the
voltage at the far end. The impedances between the sections PQ and QR is (0.1 + j 0.15) Ω. If the
voltage at the far end is 230 V, calculate the voltage at the supply end and also its phase angle with
respect to the far end.
13. A 2-wire D.C distributor AB is fed from both ends. At the feeding point A the voltage is maintained
at 240 V and at B is 245 V. The total length of the distributor is 200 meters and loads are tapped off
as under: 25A at 50 meters from A; 50A at 75 meters from A; 30A at 100 meters from A; 40A at 150
meters from A. If the resistance per Km of one conductor is 0.3Ω, calculate:
