Overview of the expectations for this course:

This course will provide you with the resources to learn to use the software called Tinkercad.
Tinkercad is a free, web-based, 3D modeling software platform used to create 3D models in
order to print them on a 3D printer.

This course aims to take away the misperceptions people have developed or heard about 3D
modeling. In this course we will start with some necessary vocabulary and terminology before
we get you into the software.

● Engineering requires teamwork so you will be expected to work with others and evaluate
or critique the work of others.
● Attention to detail is very important which means even the minutiae is examined.
● You are expected to share your work with the class and collaborate as necessary
● There will be weekly discussion posts that are due by Wednesday of every week.
● Online Student meetings are on Mondays at 5:00 PM.
● You will be required to complete a weekly reflection in the form of an open-ended writing
assignment.
● Please watch all videos to the end to ensure you are understanding the content.
● Weekly jam sessions will be held on Tuesdays to help those that need it (1 hour)
● Please look ahead to the essential questions to be prepared for class discussions.
● Final requirement is to have fun and learn something new.

Week 1 Detailed Outline:

Week 1 will be focused on learning engineering vocabulary, initial introductions, class
expectations, clearing up misconceptions or misunderstandings, and introduction to the
engineering design process.

Before our first meeting please answer the essential question in your own words and be
prepared to discuss it with your group.

Essential Question Week 1:

How can the Engineering Design Process help us with 3D modeling and keep you
focused on your goal?
(Be sure to use your own words. I don’t want dictionary definitions.)

● You will watch the video on the Engineering Process

○ After watching fill out the process worksheet in your own words
■ This will be used for future reference material
○ Write a paragraph on why you think the engineering process is important.
■ At least 3 sentences, your own words.
■ Will be used for discussion on Monday.
● Now that you have gotten a small taste of the engineering process, we are going to talk
about the individual steps.

Week 2 Detailed Outline:

This week will begin the Tinkercad software instruction. While this program is pretty
simple to use compared to other modeling platforms, it is still quite complex. Try not to become
frustrated with it. It takes a good amount of time and practice to become fluent in this software.
That being said, do not spend too much time on the basics. We can work that out on Mondays
during class or Tuesday during tutorials.

This week also introduces the “Fail Forward” mindset. In this way of looking at the world,
failing at something is encouraged and expected. We see failure as a positive thing to learn
from. We also understand that frustration sometimes gets the best of us so in that case I would
suggest taking a break before trying again. Remember, we are available via email and will
respond as soon as we can.

Before our first meeting please answer the essential question in your own words and be
prepared to discuss it with your group.

Essential Question week 2:

What do you know about having a Growth Mindset?

● You will watch the “how to set up a tinkercad account” video.

● In the resources section of this class find the Join Code.
○ This code will add you to our class inside of Tinkercad.
● Watch the first 4 minutes of the Tinkercad instructions video.
○ This video will tell you about the user interface and explain a few things to get
started.
■ You may choose to utilize the Button Mashing method instead
■ The software can’t be broken so feel free to click until you figure
something out. Anything can be undone or deleted and just started over.

● Button mashing sometimes requires a little note-taking to keep
track of what you’re doing, but it is more exploratory, and therefore
more self-paced. (I like this one better)
File Naming Convention:
The name of your file should be your last name followed by your first initial, then the title of the
piece all with no spaces.

● LastNameFirstInitial_title
○ Example: SmithJ_phoneholder01.obj
