What’s New
CYMCAP 6.0 rev. 5

• Another place with input data validation corrected when

changing a cable by another one in the installation and solve.

CYMCAP 6.0 rev. 4

• Input data validation corrected when changing a cable by another

one in the installation and solve. Validation ask again the user to
complete the specific installation data before to solve.

CYMCAP version 6.0 from rev. 1 to 3 let the user solve without
complete the specific installation data for the new cable selected
and make the calculation with default values never entered by the
user.

• Correction of "invalid argument" error obtained with ducts in trefoil

installation into specific installation data after changing to another
bonding and click OK.

• Allow to create an armour cable with no bedding and no serving to

support low voltage cable (< 2kv).

CYMCAP 6.0 rev. 3

• Problem found for installations using three core cables and

EQUALLY LOADED option. Some cases like SL-TYPE cable do
not converge and for the cases that used to converge the results
obtained with CYMCAP 5.3 rev. 2 are optimistic. Results now
matching CYMCAP 5.3 as before.

• User is not allowed anymore to assign a custom resistivity of fillers

for SL type (3-core) cables.

• Capacitance, charging capacity of three phase system and

charging current are displayed again in EXCEL report. Previous
CYMCAP 6.0 revision was displaying them at 0.0 in the EXCEL
report.

CYMCAP 6.0 rev. 2

• For MDB only, pipe type cables coordinates for Y position was
offset a little bit from it’s real position when sent to the engine in
previous CYMCAP version. This problem is corrected.

• Pipe type cables are now considered with D-shaped skid wires
(round wire was assumed before in the calculation of the
resistance of the wires).

CYMCAP 6.0 rev. 1

• Temperature isotherm plots so far assumed that the background

environment is uniform (thermal resistivity is not changing with
position). In this new version this assumption is removed for MDB
module. Therefore one can use temperature plots in an MDB
installation as well. In the case user needs to have these isotherms
for a ductbank/backfill installation, he/she needs to model it as an
MDB installation.

• Drag & drop feature is now available in CYMCAP when building or

modifying an installation.

• CYMCAP now allow to save an installation which is incomplete to

come back later and complete it.

• User can define and save customize default values for ambient
temperature, native soil thermal resistivity, dimensions and
materials of backfills, ductbanks, casings and ducts in casing.
These default parameters can later be used when creating or
modifying a new installation. These customized default parameters
can be entered by the user under Options/Preferences/Customize
Installation Defaults.

• Cable damage curve calculation added to short circuit add-on

module. User can create a cable damage curve file ready to import
in CYMTCC.

• Unlock insulation material option “Paper-polypropylene-paper” for

pipe type cable in cable library.

• Force the user to enter skid wires when creating a new pipe type
cable into cable library.

• Ducts in trefoil cable configuration is allowed in backfill installation.

• New feature that allow user to show his company logo on every
page of the EXCEL report.

• Display current CYMCAP version on every sheet of the EXCEL

report.

• For longitudinally corrugated sheath, changes of input data like

TAPE WIDTH, TAPE OVERLAP, etc... now affect the diameter
over shield and the DC resistance of the shield at 25 deg. C when
the user click the COMPUTE button.

• Small GUI correction for tunnel installation. PERMUTING

TREFOIL used to move on top of the screen after clicking OK in
the SPECIFIC INSTALLATION data dialog box.

• Tunnel inst allat ion allow com bining in t he sam e inst allat ion t he
TREFOIL layout and the PERMUTING TREFOIL layout.

• Add t4 values for tunnel installation in the EXCEL report.

• In the summary report of the Excel report, the display of the neutral
temperature was changed from 20.0 (default) to -. Temperature of
the neutral conductor is not computed by CYMCAP as it is only
used for sequence impedance calculations.

• Correction in EXCEL Report Generator for users working with

EXCEL 2010 to keep all pictures embedded in the report like
previous EXCEL versions.

• Correction to compute sheath factor (SHF) for not only two point
bonded but also for for othe bonding arrangements.

• Correction of the calculation of the diameter over insulation screen

for sector shaped belted cables. T1 is affected by this correction
and is now computed correctly.

• Display correction for the diameter over the three cores, "d", for
sector shaped screened cables. The drawing that shows the
dimension corresponding to "d" was also modified accordingly.

• Correction of the thickness of insulat ion bet w een conduct ors for
sector shaped screened cables. Now, insulation screen is added to
insulation.

• The loss factor in the case there are different cable types in the
same installation, some with an armor, the others without an
armor, was not calculated correctly. The changes can be more
significant in the case of two point bonded systems.

• The insulation thickness t1 in the steady state report for single-core

cable is now correctly computed. This insulation includes the sum
of conductor screen, insulation and insulation screen, this is
because the insulation screen and conductor screen are
considred as part of insulation when it comes to compute the
thermal resistance of the insulation T1.
• The parameters involved to compute the eddy losses in the
EXCEL report (steady state report) are now correctly displayed for
lagging, centre and leading phases.

• The induced current is calculated correctly now when we have

both sheath and concentric wires for a cable. Before CYMCAP
computing the induced current using the resistance of the sheath
instead of the equivalent resistance (Rsheath//Rcwires).

The mean diameter involved in the computation of the resistance is

corrected for:

- C. Wires.

- Custom non magnetic wires.

- Magnetic wires ( custom magnetic wires, steel wires touching

and steel wires no touching ).

- Corrugated sheath.

This correction has no significant effect on the ampacity but

improve the accuracy of the results.

• Now CYMCAP supports a custom material for longitudinally

corrugated sheath. The user can define its own material properties.

• The Excel report does not show any more 0 for the induced
voltage when we have cross bounding system with unequal
sections length and user supplies AM and AN. This is because
when the minor sections lengths are not equal, we still have some
residual induced voltage in the sheath.

• The mean diameter of reinforcement tape and the number of tapes

is now considered in the calculation of the mean diameter.

• The resistivity of the sheath for an individually sheathed 3-cores

cable is now corrected. Before CYMCAP treats the sheath as
cooper whatever the material selected. Now the resistance of the
sheath is computed according the material type the user select for
the sheath.

• The resistance for solid cooper conductors having cross section

area higher than 150 mm2 are not computed by IEC standard
when this later is selected. The previous version revert to the
calculated method resistance for these cables .

• The exterior duct temperature is correctly displayed for all the

ducts for equally loaded cases. In the previous version Only one
duct temperature is displayed, the remaining ducts showing zero
as temperature.
• The parameters required to compute the external thermal
resistance T4 for cables in air (h,Z, E) are properly reported now in
the steady state report.

• The formula used to compute T1 for screened three-core cable is

corrected and properly reported in steady state report. The
screening factor K is reported in the formula as per IEC 60287 2-1
part 2.1.1.3.1.

• The formula used to compute the proximity effect Yp for three-core

cables and three single- core cables is corrected and properly
reported as per IEC 60287 1-1 part 2.1.4.1.

• Air temperature inside the ducts for a ductbank installation is now

correctly reported in the excel report.

• The effect of sun radiation in Riser pole is corrected. The version

5.3 rev 2 was almost insensitive to solar radiation . The
convergence range is extended as well for higher intensity of solar
radiation.

• Load factor correction: the rating ampacity for cyclic loading is

more accurate now. Before the standards suggests to use an
approximate equation, however for some cases this approximation
is not good. Now we replace it with the exact equation (without
approximation).

• The rating ampacity for cyclic loading in combination with moisture

migration is now corrected. Before the derating factors shown in
the old steady state report was displaying the same factors M (
derating factor for cyclic loading) and M1 (derating factor for cyclic
loading+ moisture migration). Those factors are corrected.

• Correction also done in GUI when continuous load (LF=1) is used

with moisture migration. The derating factors reported for M and
M1 were 1.0, this is because the effect of moisture migration has
not to be accounted through these factors.
• For Submarine cables (3-cores) with separate lead sheath around
each core (SL) and an magnetic armor, two corrections were
introduced of loss factor in the sheath and armor (Lambda1 and
Lambda2). For these cables, lambda 1 should be multiplied by 1.5
as per 2.3.10 and it was not. The multiplication was done for
screened cables but not for SL-type. The correction for lambda 2
comes from an amendment to IEC387 whereby the lambda2
computed from 2.4.2.3.1 and 2 was previously multiplied by a
factor (1-lambda1) and now by a factor (1-Rac/Rs*lambda1).
• In transient analysis, when single phase circuit is used with
fraction of returning current through the sheath different form zero,
the starting point of the transient analysis is not that given in the
steady state analysis. The problem now is corrected and the
starting point is corrected.
• When the bonding type is cross bonded with unequal sections
length, we still have some induced voltage in the sheath. Since the
program doesn’t compute this value, it is no more displayed in the
Excel report for this bonding type.

• For aluminum hollow core conductors the proximity effect factor

will always be set to 0.8 instead to 1.0. There are no values in the
IEC for this type of construction, so we decided to have the same
values as for copper
• Correction for the calculation of the tunnel air thermal resistance.
For cables in trefoil, the cable diameter was taken as the diameter
of a single cable. Now it is taken as 2.15 * cable diameter.

• T2 for PIPE TYPE cable is now displayed as "Thermal Resistance

Between Screen and Sheath" and T4’ as "Thermal Resistance of
the Oil" in the STEADY-STATE tab of the EXCEL report.

• A bug to calculate the area of the skid wires has been corrected.
This affects the pipe type installations.

• Change done in Cable Library for pipe type cable when choosing
the diameter of the skid wires via the wire gauge. Diameter value
taken from the wire gauge selection is divided by 2 to represent
half of the skid wire as it showed in the cable graphic
representation.

CYMCAP 5.3.2

• Correction of a problem related to the GUI, in unfilled trough

module (UNF), which has occurred only in CYMCAP 5.3 rev.1. It is
related only to the specific case where the unfilled trough has no
cover. The selected method of calculation was not the right one.
The wrong results were on the conservative side. Please review all
these cases that are built already using CYMCAP 5.3 rev.1.

• In the case of cables crossings, in CYMCAP 5.3 rev.1, the derating

factor was not considered correctly. The results were the same as
the circuits are energized in the absence of the each other. In other
words the thermal interaction was not taken into account (the right
derating factor was not applied). This was resulted by a bug
created just in CYMCAP 5.3 rev1. Please review all the crossing
cases modeled with CYMCAP 5.3 rev. 1.

• Correction of a problem in EXCEL report found just in CYMCAP

5.3 rev.1 The external thermal resistance, T4, was not reported in
the Excel sheets.

• Introduced an alternative way to start the calculation engine for

WINDOWS XP machine.

CYMCAP 5.3.1
• Unfilled Trough module has changed significantly. Three more
options are added. Using the new options one can input the
thermal resistivities of soil, the trough’s cover and the wind
speed above the trough. The users who have already acquired
the unfilled trough module, can continue with the original
approach. The original approach is provided as the IEC option.
The three more options that are added, are called Slaninka’s
method 1, Slaninka’s method 2 and the Anders-Coates method.
In addition one can consider the cases where the trough is
exposed to sunshine or is shaded.

• In this new release, one can take into account the mutual
electrical interactions between the cables of different circuits. In
the IEC standard only thermal interaction between different
circuits is considered. The only exception is when the circuits are
multiple cables per phase.

• Ask now BETA and SH (specific heat) values in custom dialog

box for 5 type of materials (conductor, sheath, sheath reinf.,
conc. neutral and armour). This modification applied only for
SHORT CIRCUIT calculation add-on module.

• Changed the way the thermal capacitances for three core cables
are computed. This correction will affect the calculation results
produced by the transient engine. Thermal capacitances appear
in the cyclic calculations as well. Therefore the cyclic loading
results are expected to change.

• Fillers resistivity can now be entered for semi-conducting

insulation for three core cable.

• User can now create new ductbank/backfills by copying the

existing ductbank/backfills in the MDB installation.

• Correction of a bug in the steady state engine for cyclic loading

calculations that cause the engine to freeze for few cases.

• Correction made in steady state engine calculation for multiple

casing installation when varying distances between two casings.

• Corrections made in the steady-state engine for pipe type cable

(remove the computation of air temperature in pipe type cables
because applied only for other type of cables. The resistance of
the oil was computed earlier. The effect on the results is small
but is correct.

• Correction made in the steady-state engine to verify whether the

filler thermal resistivity entered by the user is lower than the
thermal resistivity of insulation. If this is the case, the thermal
resistivity of insulation over writes the thermal resistivity which is
entered by the user for the filler.

• The reference cable in the reference circuit is chosen empirically

at the third iteration. It is kept the same for the next iterations.
Originally the last cable in the reference circuit was always
chosen to be the reference.

• Small correction in the transient engine about the calculation

report of transient option 1. Scaling factor reported was
assuming a unit step load. The load curve was not considered.
Now to output the scaling factor the actual load curve is
considered.

• The t herm al resist ivit y of t he m et al lic duct s are adjust ed t o a

very sm all value.

• Corrected the problem with the EXCEL Report generator that

was not working when CYMCAP folder installation name
included one or more space(s). (Cymcap 5.2 rev 1d)

• Corrected the ERROR 3 problem when using one or more

neutral cables under MDB installation. (Cymcap 5.2 rev 1c)
• Corrected the problem to install standard ductbank at the surface
of the ground. The Y position of the ductbank always used to go
back to a default value after user entering a valid position to
localize the ductbank near the surface of the ground.
(Cymcap 5.2 rev 1c)

• Minor correction for the custom value given a "not a valid floating
number" in the cable library. (Cymcap 5.2 rev 1b)

• Replace the character º everywhere in the display by the word

"deg. C" in the presence of Asian character set. Asian users who
are interested in this alternative should contact Cyme
International (Cooper Power Systems) to get the proper hint.
(Cymcap 5.2 rev 1b)

• Excel report generation now supports Excel version 10 (office

version 10) working under WINDOWS 7. (Cymcap 5.2 rev 1b)

• Add in summary page of the Excel report a new entry which is:
"Fraction of conductor current returning through sheath for single
phase cables". (Cymcap 5.2 rev 1b)

CYMCAP 5.2.1

New features added:

• Frequency and resistance (IEC-228 or calculated) are now part
of an installation. They can be assigned as part of the
installation. Then they are saved like any other installation
parameter in the execution.
• In the MDB module default boundaries for the simulation domain
has been assumed. In the case of very deep installations one
might need to ignore the default position for the boundaries and
apply new ones. Now the user can change the size of
boundaries in the MDB installations to obtain valid results.
• As it is shown also by the IEC standard circulation losses in the
case of two point bonded systems depend on the phase
relationships between the cables. In this new release, by default,
phase B (center phase) is positioned in the center when one is
creating a new three phase circuits. Before this release phase A
was at the center.

Correction in CYMCAP and engines:

• No more support of the older protection key system.
