Running Head: Approximation Mathematics: Personal Reflection 1

The document discusses the author's experience with approximation mathematics. It explains that the author first became interested in approximation theory due to its applications in numerical analysis and functions like polynomials and Fourier series. As an instructor in partial differential equations, the author has used approximation concepts in computing and data science. The document emphasizes that understanding both univariate and multivariate approximation is important, as both play roles in numerical analysis and real-world problem solving. It concludes that learning approximation mathematics requires patience and a focus on understanding concepts to apply them to research problems.

Approximation Mathematics: Personal Reflection

My experience with the mathematical theory of approximation has been an interesting

and quite engaging one. As someone with a long-lasting interest on the application of

sophisticated analytical techniques throughout my life, I first developed an interest with the

theory of application when I realized its integral value in numerical analysis and its

application to general functions like the polynomials and finite elements or the Fourier series.

These are vital concepts that have remained indispensable through my years of physical

analysis of numerical methods as an instructor in Partial Differential Equations and its

applications.

Throughout my engagement as an instructor of Partial Differential Equations, which

is an integral component of approximation theory, I have been able to understand how to

apply the concepts to computing and data science. With an understanding of the future

application of artificial intelligence techniques in designing complex neural frameworks and

designing machines that can read the minds of human and execute tasks, approximation

theory remains an integral element in the evaluation of unknown constitutive laws and

providing solutions to complex Partial Differential Equations by grouping diverse elementary

classes of functions into the diverse space of approximation. One such important space is the

data science, in which I have had immense use and application of global polynomials,

trigonometric polynomials, spines, radial basis functions, and ridge functions.

To understand approximation mathematics, one has to understand both the univariate

and the multivariate elements since both types play integral roles in numerical analysis and

contribute almost equally in the mathematical approximation space and applications. The

univariate approximation is mainly concerned with aspects such as spline approximation of

smooth functions in 1-dimension, the application of polynomial and trigonometric functions

to analytics such as those involving single dimension analysis, linear best approximations, the

determination of best-n-terms and the approximation by tensor products in the Real number

space, which is sometimes referred to as curse dimensionality.

Multivariate approximation integrates high-dimensional approximation concepts like

mixed regularity, spine, and sparse grids, smolyak algorithms, radial basis functions and the

Gaussian processes, as well as functions like ridge function and compressed sensing. It is

always important to understand both univariate and multivariate concepts in approximation

theory to provide an individual with a better understanding of how to apply the concepts in

providing solutions to real-world problems and know how such problem can be related to

provide future solutions to even more complex real analysis problems. To advance in real

analysis and effective application of approximation mathematics, an individual must

demonstrate the ability to understand and apply key concepts, approximation theorems and

application calculations to real-life problems in both univariate and multivariate problems.

My interaction with the mathematics of approximation has since taught me that

mathematics is only meant for patient individuals who are interested in understanding the

concepts and applying them. It is not for superficial learners because approximation theory

techniques require an individual to not only know how to the concepts but to enrich the

understanding of these concepts gradually and know how to integrate them in the scope of

current research problems and theories in both pure and applied domains.
