Thirty Sixth National Convention of Civil Engineers

In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this
honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant
organization across the globe. IEI functions among professional engineers, academicians and research workers. It
provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and
the Engineering fraternity, operating from 125 Centres located across the country. The Institution provides grant-in-aid
to its members to conduct research and development on engineering subjects.
IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in different Engineering disciplines, the successful completion of which is
recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of Engineering For details, please see: www.ieindia.org

About Jharkhand State Centre

The Ranchi Sub-centre of The Institution of Engineers (India) was founded on 23rd July 1961 and over the years, the
sub-centre was upgraded to Local Centre on 5th August 1983 and elevated to State Centre on 30th March 2001 after the
creation of Jharkhand State. This centre has always striven to increase its various activities so as to cater fully the needs
of the engineering fraternity at Ranchi. This centre has been actively engaged in articulating various technical matters,
and on the engineer’s role in society and as managers. In addition to various technical activities, this centre has been
actively associated in organizing cultural programmes by the wives of the members (EWA) to inculcate bond among
members and their families. All Statutory Days such as Engineers day, World Water Day, World Telecommunication and
Information Society Day, World Environment Day, etc. are celebrated every year with family members.
From a little hut to a campus with a three storied building, two conference halls, each capable of seating 100 people,
office, library, guest an auditorium for 300 people, 3 classroom for continuous education has been an impressive journey.
This has been possible only due to the dedicated contributions of esteemed members, State Government, Public Sector
Undertakings and Private Sector Organisations.
Jharkhand State Centre has been designated as ‘A’ category centre by The Institution of Engineers (India) with around
6000 corporate members and 7500 student members. This centre has been adjudged as ‘Best Centre’ for All Round
Performance in the years 2007-08, 2008-09, 2010-11, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 by The Institution of Engineers
(India). Jharkhand State Centre has received All India Best Technician Chapter Award for last four years in a row i.e.
2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.

About Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi

An unquenchable thirst for innovation and disruption; a rich legacy of technology and entrepreneurship; and a
commitment to nurturing leaders who make a difference to the world has been the credo of BIT Mesra in the nearly six
decades of its existence.
From its inception till date, BIT Mesra continues to boldly tread paths uncharted. As a result, it has successfully conceived
and implemented initiatives that have culminated in many firsts.
• First technical institution to establish a Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry way back in 1964
• First to establish static rocket test firing facility
• First to offer P.G. programmes in association with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)
• Initiated the concept of Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park (BIT-STEP) well before it was adopted as a
national model
• First institution to be granted autonomous status in 1972 under UGC Act
It was ranked 38th among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in
2020, 66th among universities and 85th overall.
Theme and Sub-themes
Innovation, Mechanization and Modern Techniques in Civil Engineering
The Construction Industry has traditionally been labour intensive. From the past few years the Construction industry in
India is moving from labour intensive to being mechanized. Earlier, due to limited financial resources and abundant labour
availability, mechanization was never resorted to. In those days speed of construction of roads and other infrastructure
project was slow. With liberalization and globalization now a day, speed of civil construction has increased many folds
with proper quality control and new technologies and adoption of new innovative machinery. The size and complexity of
projects today makes the use of machinery and equipment indispensable. Construction of roads, high rise and complex
buildings & structures has switched to mechanization in a big way.
The development process impinges upon quality, cost, optimum time and safety. Mechanization using construction
plant and equipment starting from hand held tools to large machines like excavators, concrete plants, lifts, tower cranes
are contributing towards improvement in productivity, quality, reduction in time of construction, safety, etc. With above
in mind, the theme & title of the Civil Convention 2021 has been chosen as “Innovation, Mechanization and Modern
Techniques in Civil Engineering.”
The sub-themes will cover:
1. Earthquake Engineering
2. Structural Dynamics
3. Vibration Control of Highrise Buildings
4. Flood Management
5. Green Building Materials
6. Energy Efficiency in the Building
7. Megacities & Global Change
8. Cost Effective Housing
9. Application of Soft Computing on Damage Assessment of Structures
10. Urban Transport and The Environment, Co-benefits Approach
11. Traffic Control and Management
12. Policy Planning and Total Quality Management
13. Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment

Thirty Sixth National Convention of Civil Engineers
