Chapter I

Introduction

1.1 Background of The Research

Language is a spoken utterance that is usefull to convey ideas, action,

state of the system language or sentences that have been defined and

understood by the public. Language is closely related to human cognition,

stated that the language is the highest cognitive functions and are not owned

by the animals, the science that studies the language is referred to as

linguistics. In this there are some aspects to the study, wich are language

meaning, language form, and also language in context.

Owen (2006:1) states that :

“Language can be defined as a socially shared Those


combinations of symbols and rule governed Those
combinations of symbols (language can be defined as a
socially acceptable code or conventional system for
delivering concepts through the use of symbols and
combinations of the desired symbols are governed by
the provisions)”.

Linguistics as a science that examines the language studies thet have

various objects,macro and micro. Among othe branches of linguistics micro

is phonology,syntax,dialectology and lexicology. While the macro include

semantics, anthropolinguistics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics,

psycholinguistics, and ethnolinguistics.

Sociolinguistic is the study of effect and all aspects of society, because

language relation to social factors like, in aspects differences of class,

regional, occupational dialect, bilingualism, gender differences and

education. So, sociolinguistic is the study of language discussion that

connection with the speakers that are part of the society members gender

differences and education.

P.Trudgill (1974:32) states that:

"Sociolinguistics.. is that part of linguistics which is


concerned with language as a social and cultural
phenomenon. It investigates the field of language and
society & has close connections with the social
sciences, especially social psychology, anthropology,
human geography and sociology."

Jargon means special words that used by a particular groups and difficult

for others to understand, used that special words to another speaker in same

group to interraction each other. Jargon often can’t be understood by people

outside of the group. However, the phrase is not confidental.

Fromkin and Rodman (1979) states that:

“Jargon is words used to describe the special terms of a


professional or trade group. The definition explains that
the jargon is a collection of words or specific terms
used by a group of people where the words are only
understood by those who joined the group.”

The writer chooses an object to be the research about jargon because the

language is special, in daily life we heards a lot of language that sometimes

we don’t know what does it mean and difficult to understand or just know

from the outside and not really knowa the meaning of it. For example, this

time human live with some technology and entertainment, between that

entertainment, the one that is viral on the world is about games and the

community that playing the game called “Gamers”. The writer found Jargon

in mobile gamers community in “Jones Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group that they

use to communicate each other.

1.2 Identification of The Problem

1. There are some words of jargon in mobile gamers community in “Jones

Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group.

2. There are some words of slang in mobile gamers community in “Jones

Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group.

3. There are some words of expressions in mobile gamers community in

“Jones Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group.

4. There are some words of idiom in mobile gamers community in “Jones

Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group.

5. There sre some implied meaning in mobile gamers community in “Jones

Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group.

1.3 Limitation of the problem

Based on the identification problem above,the writer focus only on jargon

found in mobile gamers community in “Jones Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group in

“Player’s Unknown Battleground Mobile” game using the Fromkin and

Rodman theory.

1.4 Research question

The research questions in this discussion are:

1. What are forms of jargon that mobile gamers use when communicating?

2. What are the meaning of jargon that mobile gamers use when

communicating?

1.5 Purpose of the research

Refers to the research questions, the purposes of the research are:

1. To analyze the form of jargon that mobile gamers use when

communicating.

2. To identify the meaning of jargon that mobile gamers use when

communicating.

1.6 Method of the research

In this research, the writer uses qualitative and participan observativion

method, because the source details in the form of words an not in the form of

numbers and statistics and the writer also joins in and becomes part of the

“Jones Bar-Bar” group. Processes and meanings (the subject’s perspective) is

more highlighted in the qualitative research. In fact, data analysis in

qualitative research is an on going activity that occures throughout the

investigative procces rather than after procces (Sugiyono, 2006: 275). “The

researcher builds a complex, holisticpicture, analizes words, report detailed

views of information, and conducts the study in a natural setting”. Then, the

writer uses some steps, they are collecting data, analyzing data, and

presenting data.

Participant observation is a variant of the natural observations, but here

the researcher joins in and becomes part of the group they are studying to get

a deeper insight into their lives (McLeod, S. A. 2015, June 06).

1.6.1 Collecting the data

In this step, the writer uses the interview method. The writer apply

structured interview technique and participant observation. The writer use

interview guidelines that contain specific questions and join the group while

they playing the games, but only contain important points of the problem

that the respondents want to explore.

According to Nazir (1988):

“interview adalah proses memperoleh keterangan untuk


tujuan penelitian dengan cara tanya jawab sambil
bertatap muka antara si penanya atau pewawancara
dengan si penjawab atau responden dengan
menggunakan alat yang dinamakan interview guide
(panduan wawancara)”.

Accroding to Sevilla (1993):

“Observasi atau pengamatan dalam istilah sederhana


adalah proses dimana peneliti atau pengamat melihat
situasi penelitian. Metode ini sangat sesuai digunakan
dalam penelitian yang meliputi pengamatan kondisi atau
interaksi belajar mengajar, tingkah laku bermain anak-
anak dan interaksi kelompok”.

These method is very suitable with the writer’s research of the object.

This method is suitable because the writer have to interview the “Gamers”

and join them in the game for collecting the data for “Jargon used by mobile

gamers community in “Jones Bar-Bar” Whatsapp group”

There are some steps in collecting data. First, the writer go to see the

gamers or start a chat in Whatsapp with them and interview the gamers that

the writer found availabe. Next, the writer take a note to write any jargon

which appear while playing the games and in the interview.

1.6.2 Analyzing the data

In analyzing the data, the writer uses referential methods recording to

Sudaryanto (1993) “Referential identity method is the method which uses

the context around the utterer”. There are some steps in the data analysis

are : First the writer will grouping the jargon words that the writer got from

the “gamers”, then the writer will describe each one of the jargon from the

form of the jargon, the meaning of the jargon and the contex of the jargon.

1.6.3 Presenting the result of the analysis

In presenting the result of the analysis, according to Sudaryanto

(1993:133), there are formal means that the result of the analysis are writen

in symbol and sign. On the other hand, informal means the result of the

analysis is explained an described in the form of words.

The writer choose to do the informal presentation, so the writer will

presentate the result of the analysis with an explanation and described in the

form of words
