MODULE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY SOCIETY

CHAPTER IV: THE GOOD LIFE

THINK ABOUT THESE QUESTIONS:

Directions: Answer the questions and Activities based on the topic discussed and understanding.

1. What is the good life?

The good life is constantly in pursuit by Man. Every person has his perspective
when it comes to what comprises the good life. For me the Good life is about having
peace of mind, feelings in ourselves. Every day we go through hard but we continue to
fight so that we can reach the good life we want.
But no surprise that people are still looking to discover what it truly means to
be living the good life. Finding an answer to this question is not easy, even in the
modern age of information. The term “living the good life” can mean quite a variety of
different things to different people. The following will present from a variety of
different perspectives what the good life is all about. In its basic form, living the good
life is all about the exploration of that which gives you joy and satisfaction. It’s about
finding purpose and meaning in your life and drawing happiness from that which
you do.

2. What is the relationship between the good life and science?

The relationship between Good life and science is having the goal of science to
make man have a good life. It is science that provides good life for everyone and at the
same time, it is the quest for good life that fuels science.
In this huge world where number of inventions are rapidly growing, science
made the lives of many convenient. The scientific inventions pave way for
technological enhancements leading to more jobs, technological enhancements
making household chores easy and more legit explanations on myth and belief of the
society which makes us more educated and took away the innocence on salient
matters. The advent of technology through science gives us idea on genetic
engineering and other medical enhancements that are helpful in our lives as humans.

3. Does technology always lead us to the good life? How and why?

Yes, we achieve good life through technology. Technology has been a countless
help to humans since it was discovered with the purpose of making our way of life
easier and more comfortable. Various innovations and novelties were learned that
give birth to a more advanced way of living. With the help of technology, our use of
modes in transportation and communication which are considered as one of the most
significant aspect in human’s life have been more accessible. People nowadays uses
different social media platforms to connect with each other despite the distance that
hinders them.
4. Do people really need technology in their lives? Is it really a necessity?

Yes, we need technology in our lives as of today’s dynamic world. Technology

is inevitable in our everyday lives. It is which brings together tools to promote
development, use and information. Technology is in high demand due to rising supply
and work place demands. This makes our lives simpler by allowing us to do things
more quickly and easily. Things that used to take a long time can now be completed
in a short amount of time. Despite this, there are still certain items that are best
achieved without automation, such as high-quality handicrafts. Overall, technology is
considered necessary in today's world because it makes our lives simpler in a variety
of ways.

5. How do you reconcile the 'need' for technology and the dilemma/s it faces?

Me as a current student which uses technology as a tool in doing my activities

and assignments to make it easier. I can say that the best way to reconcile the need
for technology and the dilemmas it faces right now particularly in ethical issues is
intensive literacy or education. We can count a lot of dilemmas which technology is
facing right now. I want to focus on one because I believe these dilemmas should be
addressed separately. Perhaps the one of the greatest dilemmas that technology is
facing right now is the ethical issues like copyright infringement, violation in
intellectual property rights, computer crimes such as cyber bullying, phishing,
scamming and the likes. Addressing Ethical Issues as a Dilemma of Technology
Without Compromising the Need for Technology.
The occurrence of these ethical issues is clearly visible in the society we have
right now. These ethical issues should be addressed immediately to avoid serious
effects in the end. However, in dealing these issues, it should not compromise the
risky need of technology. And the best thing to deal with these ethical issues is
thorough literacy or education.

6.. Should there be an ethics of technology?

In my point of view of seeing technology, it should have an ethics in all aspects

since it affects out daily life routine. When we say Ethics, it refers to all the regulation
and rules of decorum or manners based on ideas about what is morally good and
bad. New technologies give us more power to act, which means that we have to make
choices we didn't have to make before. While in the past our actions were
involuntarily constrained by our weakness, now, with so much technological power,
we have to learn how to be voluntarily constrained by our judgment.
These changes obviously present some powerful risks, and we should ask
ourselves whether we think such changes are worthwhile – because we do have
choices in the technologies we make and live by. We can govern our technologies by
laws, regulations, and other agreements. Some fundamentally ethical questions that
we should be asking of new technologies include: What should we be doing with
these powers now that we have developed them? What are we trying to achieve?
How can this technology help or harm people? What does a good, fully human life
look like? As we try to navigate this new space, we have to evaluate what is right
and what is wrong, what is good and what is evil.
7. Is having a good life is also having a truth?

I can say no, not all the good life you have today is truth. Because sometimes
man becomes happy with something that should not be and is not true and fair. Man
is blinded to what often gives him pleasure even in technology, when he is trampled
on by others. We often forget what real life is and we prioritize what is a good life in
the wrong way.

8. What are your beliefs about?

My belief in having a good life is having a positive outlook and direction where
my life is headed especially in being responsible in the use of technology. My plans of
having a good life are going well. But with the availability of technology Additionally,
we’ve become so powerful now that we not only have the power to destroy ourselves,
but we also have the ability to change ourselves. That’s a tremendous power, one
that must be matched with serious reflection on ethical principles such as dignity,
fairness, and the common good. The temptation to power without ethics is something
we need to avoid now more than ever. If one is powerful without goodness, one
becomes dangerous and capable of very evil actions. In fact, such dangerous power
may well destroy itself and perhaps take many innocent lives with it. As long as
there is technological progress, technology ethics is not going to go away; in fact,
questions surrounding technology and ethics will only grow in importance. As we
travel this path into the future together, we will choose the kind of future we create.
Given our growing technological power, we need to put more and more attention
towards ethics if we want to live in a better future and not a worse one.

9. What kind of technology you usually use?

One of the technology innovations I use most often is the cellphone. This is the
thing that is easy to use with everyone because you can do a lot with this gadget.
Apart from its communication tool, you can watch, play, and socialize through social
media sites. The cellphone is a big help especially for someone like me who works
and studies at the same time.

10. Does technology has affected your daily life? Cite an example.

Obviously, technology is part of almost every aspect of daily life now. A lot of
the change to how we live our lives is pretty incredible and I couldn’t imagine not
having it. We can connect with family remotely with ease or work from home and
collaborate and communicate with colleagues in real-time. We have unparalleled
access to information and can connect with other people that share our interests.
However, that potent role in our daily rhythms, the ability to do so much at almost
any time, can lead to feelings of tech not always aligning with the complete picture of
our needs. For me technology has a huge impact on what I do on a daily basis. Life is
meaningless today without technology, every person’s life is already attached to its
use. Not only physically but mentally, and emotionally aspect of human life. Like me,
I can say that I can’t afford to live without my cellphone because it’s already my life.
I’m used to waking up looking at my gadget. It is a painful fact that many of us
cannot live without technology. Everything is now possible by using it. It's up to us
how we take care of the proper use of technology.
DO THIS!!

Do the Activities below.

1. Good Life Collage. Cut out pictures in magazines or newspapers that demonstrate how technology
has made the man's desire for a happy life more realizable. You may also opt to print out pictures from
websites and other sources. Explain how these technological advancements have made the campaign
for the attainment of good life easier or otherwise.

Innovations and new technologies are changing the world and the daily lives of each and
every one of us. Many things that were mere visions of the future yesterday are now
reality. Meanwhile, we are surrounded by technology at every moment of our lives.

If you look at the picture above, it shows that technology has done a lot of good in human
life. You can do a lot with a technology, such as mobile phone applications that you can
use to enable a device. With surveillance, for the security of your home you can now
monitor and record what is happening inside your home while no one is around.

2. Compare and Contrast. Identify two modes of doing the same thing where one involves a more
technologically advanced method. Example would be snail mail vs. e-mail. List down as many
examples. Brainstorm with a partner if a less technologically sophisticated mechanism can actually
turn out to be better in terms of reaching for the good life. Is the more technologically advanced always
better?

With development happening in the whole world, technological advancements have

changed or modified old ways of doing things. Here are some examples:
Physical Banking Vs. E-Banking

Physical banking activities are a traditional way of depositing and

withdrawing money from a bank, updating cheque-books, checking balance amount,
etc. This was more time-consuming and inefficient, as it involved travelling to the
bank, waiting in queues. Even for the bank, it was a difficult task to manage the
crowd, which led to increasing costs of extra employees, sitting arrangements, etc.

The system of e-banking has reduced this burden to a great extent. These
activities now take place online in most cases. The labor cost of excess employees
has reduced, which can be deviated to something more productive. Even for the
consumers time and efforts have reduced significantly.

Physical Ordering Vs. Delivery Online

The traditional way of physical takeaways of food from restaurants was

probably more expensive and inefficient for the consumers. The commuting cost, the
extra effort involved, etc. made it expensive for the consumers. This also limited the
takeaways for the restaurants, as very people could afford this cost.

Modern food delivery applications including Grab Food, Food Panda, etc. have
made the process very easy and convenient for the consumers. For the sellers, the cost
of hiring delivery personnel may have increased but along with that, the overall
delivery demands have also risen, which compensates for the cost.

Traditional Advertising Vs Online Advertisement

The old ways of marketing/advertising were a tad too expensive because the
physical presence of marketing individuals was a must. This made it inefficient as the
reach of advertising was also less. For instance, insurance agents would go door to
door to talk about their policies.

Marketing and advertising through various modes on the internet and TV

have made it more cost-efficient and profitable, as more people have access to it.

Traditional Shopping Vs Online Shopping

Traditional Shopping In the traditional shopping, one has to leave home, either
walk or take a ride to the store or shopping center in order to buy what one wants.
Traditional shopping enables one to see the actual product before paying the money.
One could get the actual product that he or she likes with the money.

Online Shopping that we all do. This is very common nowadays. In earlier
days we have to go to clothing shops and then we choose and we pay for the product
we purchased. But nowadays we can shop from our house. We don't have to travel. We
can select the various size according to our body shape. We can also pay online which
is completely safe and easy. Thus online shopping saves our time, energy, fuel, and
many more things
3. Cite your opinion in a video. Choose a from the suggested topic that makes an interest to you
and discuss it. (a 5-minute video will do)
Suggested topics: Should there be a limit to technological advancements?

Video: Technological Progress - Is There a Limit?

This video tackled about the progression of the Technology. The thing about
technological advancement is that it’s inevitable. It’s a part of life. It does not have a pulse,
but it’s a living thing and in the way of all living things, there’s growth.
Since the beginning of human existence, each generation has experienced
progressions and advancements relevant to its time. I was born in the late eighties and the
first major advancement of my time was the internet. Since then, my generation has had a
front row seat to some of the most extreme technological advancements in history; artificial
intelligence, robotics, and telephones that allow you to see your loved ones while on two
different continents, just to name a few. Technology is driven by consumer demand.
Telephones, computers, and watches do more than just their innate purpose now, and as
long as the public hands over the cash, technology will continue to expand—which is why
it’s advancing at an exceptional rate. In the past it used to take centuries for innovation to
take root and today breakthroughs occur almost daily. It’s mind-blowing that we are
witnessing so much change in our lifetime, but with a vast amount of technology already in
play, change happens faster. It’s simply our new normal. It is very evident today that
technology is very useful since we are facing pandemic in some areas like education,
workplace and many other things that we can still do even of this difficult situation.
So why would anyone fear these advancements? For some people, the expansion of
technology is a little frightening. Technology has indeed made things easier for us, but we
have to make sure that we don’t lose our dexterity in the innovation. It’s our responsibility
to find a balance where technology properly serves our needs without losing our intrinsic
ingenuity. The key is to minimize its misuse, restrain ourselves from overuse, and increase
its potential to create a better future for all of us. Technology has changed the world in
ways our ancestors probably could not imagine. If we use it properly, we will change the
world for the better. It will cure diseases, open many doors, and provide intelligence.
Technology is shaping the future—it should not be feared. And If it ends up devastating us
due to misuse and corruption, then we only have ourselves to blame.

2. Group Script. Each group should choose a unique topic and its perceived effects and the dilemma it
entails. Show your stand on a technological dilemma through a script. Do not forget to show the role or
roles played by the technological advancement in the lives of the people.

Suggested topics: Waze application

Technology is supposed to make us easier to reach, and often does. But the same
modes of communication that have hooked us on the instant replay also can leave us
feeling forgotten.” There is no doubt that we live in an age of technology and information
transmission unlike any other in the history of human existence.

Technology is therefore a means to an end. As humans grow in knowledge and

understanding of how particular systems work the techniques will improve to bring
about the desired results more efficiently.
Waze Application Always know what’s happening on the road with Waze. Even if
you know the way, Waze tells you about traffic, construction, police, crashes, and more in
real-time. If traffic is bad on your route, Waze will change it to save you time. While this
might sound ok to many, but it has actually resulted in many traffic mishaps and even
accidents. Drivers are found busy updating their location status while on the road, and
the consequences yield lanes stuffed with traffic, and dangerous collisions at times. It is
quite similar to the road accidents caused due to driver’s diverted attention towards the
stereo player in the car to switch the songs, only the outcomes are far more dramatic. As
the use expanded, the volume of information and individual data online has additionally
expanded which has postured extensive negative effects on clients. As imparting one’s
close to home data, area, pictures and others have turned into a typical standard for
these apps, singular security has been traded off as it were. This moral attention has
brought up a few issues, and obliges the organization to figure-out an approach to
consolidate programmed overhauling of data in order to make the application easy to use.
