1 Such is our dependence in fossil fuels, and such is the volume of carbon dioxide we have
2 already released into the atmosphere, which most climate scientists agree that significant
3 global warming is now inevitable – the best we can hope to do is keep it at a reasonable
4 level, and even that is going to be an uphill task. At present, the only serious option on the
5 table for doing this is cutting back in our carbon emissions, but while a few countries are
6 doing major strides in this regard, the majority are having great difficulty even stemmed
7 the rate of increase, let alone reversing it. Adversely, an increasing number of scientists
8 are beginning to explore the alternatives. They all fall under the banner of geoengineering
9 – generally defined as the intentional large – scale manipulation of the environment.

Question III. Read the passage and choose the best answers to questions below. Write the
answers on your answer sheet. (10 points)
In most discussions of cultural diversity, attention has focused on visible explicit aspects
of culture, such as language, dress, food, religion, music and social rituals. Although they are
important, these visible expressions of culture, which are taught deliberately and learned
consciously, are only the tip of the iceberg of culture. Much of culture is taught and learned
implicitly, or outside awareness. Thus, neither cultural insiders nor cultural outsiders are aware
that certain “invisible” aspects of their culture exist.
Invisible elements of culture are important to us. For example, how long we can be late
before being impolite, what topics we should avoid in a conversation, how we show interest or
attention through listening behaviour, what we consider beautiful or ugly. These are all aspects
of culture that we learn and use without being aware of it. When we meet other people whose
invisible cultural assumptions differ from those we have learned implicitly, we usually do not
recognize their behaviour as cultural in origin.
Differences in invisible culture can cause problems in cross-cultural relations. Conflicts
may arise when we are unable to recognize other’s behavioural differences as cultural rather than
personal. We tend to misinterpret others realizing that we are experiencing cultural rather than
individual differences.
Formal organization and institutions such as schools, hospitals, workplaces, governments,
and the legal system are collection sites for invisible cultural misunderstanding. For example, if
we met a man in a courthouse who was wearing exotic clothes, speaking a language other than
ours, and carrying food that looked strange, we would not assume that we understood his
thoughts and feelings or that he understood ours. Yet when such a man is dressed similarly to us,
speaks our language and does not and does not differ from us in other obvious ways, we may fail
to recognize the invisible cultural differences between us. As a result, mutual misunderstanding
may arise.

Without fail, almost every recognized nation has its own heritages, most of which are undergoing
degradation. From my standpoint, historic preservation is of paramount importance. Firstly,
heritages represent a country’s history. More specifically, these historic premises have stood the
vicissitudes of centuries, providing people with more knowledge about the past and instilling a
sense of patriotism. Furthermore, heritages are a source of income for the local and the nation as
a whole. Through tourism, a country’s economy can be promoted, thereby allowing indigenous
residents to better their lives, especially those in developing and poverty-stricken regions. One
feasible solution to the current state of heritages is the government should allocate more funds
with a view to restoring and renovating run-down historic places. In conclusion, more endeavors
need to be devoted to heritage preservation, since heritages have a pivotal role to play in the
existence of a nation. (146 words)
