22 Course Description
Line representation: Equivalent circuit of short, medium and long transmission line. Network
representation: Single line and reactance diagram of power system and per unit representation. Load flow:
Gauss-Seidel method. Power flow control: Tap changing transformer, phase shifting, booster and
regulating transformer and shunt capacitor. Fault analysis: Short circuit current and reactance of a
synchronous machine. Symmetrical fault calculation methods: symmetrical components, sequence
networks and unsymmetrical fault calculation. Protection: Introduction to relays, differential protection and
distance protection. Introduction to circuit breakers. Load curves: Demand factor, diversity factor, load
duration curves, energy load curve, load factor, capacity factor and plant factor.
23 Course Objectives
The objectives of studying this course are
1. To understand how to model a power system and perform analysis on the developed model in normal operation
and under symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults, including basic principles for protection against such faults.
2. To learn basic principles for formulation and application of power flow.
3. To apply the concepts to analyze the power system operations.
