Objectives

➔ Apply the rubric for the Directed Situations of the


CSEC Spanish Examination to achieve high
performance;
➔ Employ strategies/ tips on scoring high;
➔ Sharpen reading and writing skills through practice
activities.

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.
1. Write in SPANISH the information required for EACH of the situations given
below.

2. Do NOT use more than ONE sentence for each situation. For some situations,
a complete sentence MAY NOT be necessary.

3. Do NOT translate the situations given.

4. Do NOT write EACH answer on a different page.


Description and Assessment
For this section, you will give written Spanish
responses to 10 situations.
Each is worth 3 marks for its appropriateness
and for correctness of expression (grammatical
structure, spelling tenses, etc.).
Description
Situations usually require that you give a response to a
communicative function:

The purpose that the language serves in a real life situation


(giving information/ instructions, giving an explanation,
making a request, making a promise, apologising,
congratulating, etc.)

There are two common ways of


expressing obligation in Spanish,
to say that someone has to,
should, ought or must do
something. Look out for them in
the following sentences and tell
us how they are used.

● Debo ayudar en las reparaciones.

• Tenemos que estudiar la historia de


Colombia.

The verb deber and the verb


phrase tener que are the two
most common ways of
expressing obligation in Spanish,
to say that someone has to,
should, ought or must do
something. They are followed by
the infinitive form of the verb.

We should practise more in order to
improve.

• Tenemos practicar más para mejorar.


We have to practise more in order to

6. Say "I was wrong" or "it's my
fault". To say "I was wrong," use
the phrase “Me equivoqué.

1) Lo siento
“I’m sorry”.
lo siento mucho: “I’m
really sorry”.

This one comes from the verb
“to regret” (lamentar), and is
similar to lo siento.
• I’m sorry for your loss – Lamento
tu/su pérdida.
• I’m sorry for your
grandfather’s death – Lamento
la muerte de tu/su (abuelo,
abuela, tío, etc)

3) Mi sentido pésame – Mis sentidas

My deepest condolences
(usually used at funerals;
normally used when speaking to
the family who lost a loved one.)

sending condolences for the
loss of a relative.
Tips for the Directed Situations
➔ Determine the communicative
function required for each situation.
➔ Do not use more than one sentence
to respond.
➔ You may use a comma (,) or
semi-colon (;) to separate ideas.

➔ Read the situation carefully; answer only
what is required.
➔ Pay attention to the form of response
which is needed: question/
statement/command/ tense to be used-
past, present, future, etc.

➔ Remember, you will not score
any marks if your response is
inappropriate.
