Chapter 1 Decimal Numbers Student Workbook

This document contains a mathematics lesson on chapter 1 about decimals. It includes definitions of decimal terminology, how to write and decompose decimal numbers, plot them on a number line, compare them by placing in order of increasing value, and add or subtract decimal numbers by lining up the decimal points. The lesson concludes with exercises for students to practice these skills by writing numbers as words, filling in missing numbers, using place value charts, comparing and ordering decimals, finding numbers that meet certain criteria, and performing addition and subtraction of decimals.

1.2. Writing decimal numbers in a place value chart:

46 700,431
5 units, 7 hundredths and 9 thousandths
13 400 020,001

2
1.3. Decomposing decimal numbers:
Decimal numbers can be written in different ways :

3 2 4 5324
5,324 = 5 + 0,3 + 0,02 + 0,004 = 5+ + + =
10 100 1000 1000

…………. = ……………………………………. = 2 + 9/100 + 8/1000

0,987 = ……………………………………. = …………………………………………….

1.4. Plotting decimal numbers on a number line:

A (4,32) B (……………) C (………….) D (4,315)

1.4. Comparing decimal numbers

 Eliminating zeros
All the zeros to the right of a decimal number can be eliminated

24,5670  24,567 1,01100  1,011 089,900  ……………… 9,000  …………..

3
 How to compare decimal numbers:

FROM THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT. First compare the whole part of the number. If it is the same,
then compare the tenths, then the hundredths, then the thousandths...
If the numbers you are comparing do not have the same number of digits, then you can add
zeros to the right of the decimal number to compare them more easily.
You can also put them in a place value chart:

Put in an increasing order:

5,62 - 6,062 - 5,099 - 5,7 - 6,018 – 5,991 - 5,601 - 6,1 – 6,099

………. < …………. <. …………… < ………… < ………… < …………. < …………… < ……….. < …………

1.5. Inserting decimal numbers

Fill in the missing numbers:

5,0 ……. 5,3 …. 5,7 5,8 6,0

……. …… ……. ….
1.6. Adding and subtracting decimal numbers

The most important thing to remember when adding or subtracting decimal numbers is to:
o Add or subtract only numbers of equal value.
o write down the numbers one under the other, with the decimal points lined up
o put in zeros if necessary so the numbers have the same length
o remember to put the decimal number in the answer

24,03 + 5,501 + 39,7 + 8,6 = 77,831

2.4. Fill in the sequence:

2.5. Place Value Chart: Write the following numbers in the place value chart
7
2.6. Place value: find the number!

 Find a number that has six digits

and where the tens digit is 7, the
hundredths digit is 9, the ones
digit is 0, the thousandths digit is
3, the tenths digit is the double
of the thousandths digit, there
are no hundredths and the first
digit is 1.

2.10. Comparing decimals

To compare decimals, first list them one above the other, with the decimal points lined up.
You might find it easier to compare the numbers if you write them out with the same
number of digits after the decimal point. (You can do this by writing 0s on the end of
numbers with fewer decimal places). Then, starting at the left, compare first the whole
numbers then the decimal values going from left to right.

Compare these numbers using the place value chart:

1,1 - 0,011 - 2,142 – 0,32 – 2,014 – 0,098 – 0,8 – 2,01 – 1,01 – 0,09

Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths

1 1 0 0

Write the numbers from smallest to largest using < sign:

................................................................................................................................................

2.11. Find the decimal number:

I have 5 digits, all of them even numbers. My thousandth digit is a square number and my
tens digit is half of 16. My hundredths digit is 6 and my tenths number is half of the
thousandths one. All my digits are different.
Can you find out who I am? ...................................................................

10
2.12. Add and subtract decimals: solve !
1 a. 2.5 + 2.870 = _______ 1 b. 1.032 + 1.32 = _______

2 a. 5.096 + 0.648 = _______ 2 b. 2.18 – 1.34 = _______

3 a. 5.4 + 1.829 = _______ 3 b. 4.59 + 3.7 = _______

4 a. 2.60 – 2.5 = _______ 4 b. 4.3 + 2.4 = _______
