1.3. Decomposing decimal numbers:
Decimal numbers can be written in different ways :
3 2 4 5324
5,324 = 5 + 0,3 + 0,02 + 0,004 = 5+ + + =
10 100 1000 1000
Eliminating zeros
All the zeros to the right of a decimal number can be eliminated
3
How to compare decimal numbers:
FROM THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT. First compare the whole part of the number. If it is the same,
then compare the tenths, then the hundredths, then the thousandths...
If the numbers you are comparing do not have the same number of digits, then you can add
zeros to the right of the decimal number to compare them more easily.
You can also put them in a place value chart:
………. < …………. <. …………… < ………… < ………… < …………. < …………… < ……….. < …………
……. …… ……. ….
1.6. Adding and subtracting decimal numbers
The most important thing to remember when adding or subtracting decimal numbers is to:
o Add or subtract only numbers of equal value.
o write down the numbers one under the other, with the decimal points lined up
o put in zeros if necessary so the numbers have the same length
o remember to put the decimal number in the answer

2.10. Comparing decimals
To compare decimals, first list them one above the other, with the decimal points lined up.
You might find it easier to compare the numbers if you write them out with the same
number of digits after the decimal point. (You can do this by writing 0s on the end of
numbers with fewer decimal places). Then, starting at the left, compare first the whole
numbers then the decimal values going from left to right.
1,1 - 0,011 - 2,142 – 0,32 – 2,014 – 0,098 – 0,8 – 2,01 – 1,01 – 0,09
1 1 0 0
