Mobile Application Protocols

Mobile application protocols were created to [1] increase efficiency and reduce network overhead when transmitting data to and from mobile devices. Six key protocols were developed as part of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) standard to support data transmission over both IP and non-IP networks. These included WP-TCP, TLS, and WP-HTTP for IP networks, and WSP, WTP, and WDP for non-IP networks. Each protocol was optimized for mobile devices and wireless networks.

Mobile Application Protocols

Goloran Flaherty has been writing since 2002. He composes in-house technical
reports, analyses and processes on the subjects of Internet-protocol networking and
telecommunications for a Fortune 500 technology company. Flaherty is a Microsoft-
certified network engineer and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Rutgers
University.

1.

o Mobile application protocols increase efficiency and reduce network overhead.

Mobile application protocols are specified in the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
standard. The WAP standard was created in an attempt to provide real-time interactive
data over a mobile network by integrating telephony, wireless data and the Internet so
that data transmission conforms to and is accessible by hand-held devices. Three mobile
application protocols were created for use on IP networks and another three protocols for
use on non-IP networks.

2. Wireless Profiled TCP

o The Wireless Profiled Transport Control Protocol (WP-TCP) is a connection-
oriented protocol that provides a means for exchanging application data directly between
two mobile devices on an IP network. WP-TCP is optimized for use on wireless IP
networks and is fully compatible with the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) used on
the Internet.

Transport Layer Security

o The Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a mobile application protocol specified in
the WAP suite that provides a means for wireless clients to securely communicate with
application servers over a network. This protocol is used on wireless IP networks and
secure data transmission is achieved by two-way data encryption between the client and
the application server.

Wireless Profiled Hypertext Transfer Protocol

o The Wireless Profiled Hypertext Transfer Protocol (WP-HTTP) is a modification of
the HTTP protocol used on the Internet that optimizes the protocol for use on mobile
devices. WP-HTTP is used on wireless IP networks by mobile web browsers and is
compatible with HTTP. WP-HTTP supports response message compression for efficient
bandwidth use and secure tunneling for data security
Wireless Session Protocol
o The Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) is a mobile application protocol that is
based on the HTTP protocol, but is used on non-IP networks. The WSP establishes a
session between a client device and an application server when the client first contacts
the application server and maintains that session until the client ends it. By defining a
session one time and maintaining it for the length of the client connection WSP saves
valuable bandwidth on wireless networks.

Wireless Transaction Protocol

o The Wireless Transaction Protocol (WTP) is another mobile application protocol
for use on non-IP networks. The WTP protocol is primarily used for application
connections between a client and a server on mobile telephone networks. The
implementation of WTP on mobile phone networks provides Internet access to mobile
phones.

Wireless Datagram Protocol

o The Wireless Datagram Protocol (WDP) is used for mobile application services
on non-IP networks. The WDP provides a means of application data transport to the
mobile device by providing a transparent interface that translates data to a form usable
by the mobile device regardless of the underlying protocol technology used on the
network that hosts the application server.
