INTRODUCTION
Thane is one of the 36 districts in the
Maharashtra state of India. The district is
on the western coast and falls under the
Konkan division of the state
With history dating it back to 1817, Thane
today offers some stark contrasts. On one
hand, with the ongoing urbanisation Thane
city is dotted with skyscrapers, swank
malls and multiplexes, flyovers and wide
roads, and on the other, barely a few
score km away are some of the most
wretched tribal villages and hamlets in the
hilly forested regions and tiny fishing
villages on the coast
HISTORY
The ancient city of Thane, capital of the Shilahara
kings of Konkan, was apparently a land grant from
Ankisara Devraja, sovereign of the city of
Tagara.According to European travelers, it was a well
developed port.
The Portugesecame to the city in 1530 and ruled it for
200 years before it was captured byMarathas in 1739.
The city is known for the first railway line in the
country(Mumbai to Thane in 1853). In 1863, the first
Municipal Council was formed. As a result of growth of
population the status of Municipal Corporation was
grantedto Thane city and surrounding areas in 1982.
LAKES
Thane was known as city of lakes – with more
than 100 lakes
At present,TMC has about 35 rain fed lakes
and a few of them have become major
recreational attractions.The overall water
quality of lakes has been found deteriorated
and TMC is making efforts to improve the
state of lakes by undertaking “Lake
Beatification Remediation Program” with the
support of MOEF, GOI.
RECENT HISTORY
Until 1 August 2014 the district was divided into 15 talukas. However, on that date the
district was split in two with the creation of a new Palghar district, which took 8 of
these talukas, leaving the reduced Thane district comprising Thane, Kalyan, Murbad,
Bhiwandi, Shahapur, Ulhasnagar and Ambarnath talukas

The natives of Thane belong to Agri and Koli communities who still inhabit the
villages scattered in and around the Thane District.
They have retained their culture and heritage over the centuries and
protected it from the heavy torrents of modernization.
During the Portuguese and British Rule over India, Thane was also occupied by
Portuguese, English and local (converted) Roman Catholics. The historic phases
in the period of Thane has resulted into various settlements.
Apart from the predominance of Maharashtrian culture, Marathi people, a
sizable population of North Indians, South Indians, Gujratis and Marwaris are
also settled here.

Parking(Bicycle)
• Space required by bicycles: brisk riding in one
direction from 1.40 m width, better 1.60 m;
overtaking and meeting oncoming bicycles at
reduced speed 1.60-2.00 m width; widths of 2.0Q-
2.50 m are better, if bicycles with trailers also use
the cycle way.
• The basic dimensions for the traffic space of
bicycles can be deduced from the basic width of
0.60 m plus the height of the cyclist ---7 0 and the
required margin of movement in various
situations.
• Passages between cycle stands should not be made
too narrow: passage width min. 1.50 m (preferably
2.00 m) up to a length of 10m, 1.80 m width up to
15 m, 2.20 m width up to 25 m. Interrupt with a
passage every 15m. Passage width between multi-
storey stands min. 2.50 m. The longer the stands,
the wider the passage. Bike-Safe 1-3 storeys, 15-42
bicycles. Ground area 4 x 4 m height above ground
level 5 m
