Games: Name of The Games How To Play The Games
+ Divide your class into two different teams. It's easier if they form lines.
Whispers
+ Take a sentence from your lesson
+ Whisper it into the ear of the first person in line
+ They then whisper it to the person next to them.
+ Students continue whispering to each other on down the line
+ The last student says out loud what he heard
What is said out loud can often be humorous as bits and pieces of the sentence get left out and
altered. You can play around with the number of words that you are whispering to your students. For
this to be an effective game, the whispering must be done quietly. If everyone in the line is not
whispering then have them go back to the broken link in the line and do it again.
How to do it:
Another twist on this activity is that instead of saying "teacher says" you could just say "touch your
nose" and then try to trick them by doing something different from what you are saying (actually
touching your leg)
● Divide your class into two teams and into two lines standing facing the board
Pass the marker
● Say or point to a word on the board and say "Go"
● Each student says the word while at the same time passing it down the line
● The last students run up to the board to write and say it
● Give a point to the first one to say it correctly
● They then go to the front of the line
● Continue
This is a fun game for teaching ESL. It is also very efficient. If a student doesn't say the word send
the marker back and have them do it again or don't give their team a point.
For large classes you can divide your ESL students into more than two lines. Due to space I
probably wouldn't have any more than 4 lines. This activity goes pretty fast so you put 10 people or
so in one line. If someone doesn't speak then you can have them pass the marker back.
For lower levels you can have them draw a picture instead of writing the word and then say what it
is when they finish. Give a point to the fastest to draw and say it correctly.
Then maybe after they have some practice you can have them write it.
This game is efficient as it takes almost no time to prepare and little time is wasted performing the
activity. It's good for practicing repetitive items and perfecting their speech.
For large classes greater than 15 students or so you can divide them into groups with about 5
students in a group or so. In this case the group will become the individual, meaning instead of
having one student from each team speaking we will have two groups speaking and competing
against one another.
Make sure all the students speak in the group and if not you can give it to the team where everyone
speaks. Then just pick a student on the team to pick a number 1, 5, or 10 and continue.
This is a fun and efficient activity that can be used when teaching and practicing vocabulary words.
Sprite
Students get the chance to practice the four skills; writing, reading, listening and speaking.
To do this activity:
● Divide your class into two or more teams depending on the size of the class
● Say a vocabulary word from your lesson
● One student from each team races up to the board to write it
● After they write it they say it
● The first student to say it and write it correctly gets a point for their team
● The other students seated can help them spell it correctly
● Make sure that they correct any mistakes before sitting down
You could also have them draw a picture of the word as well as write it.
This activity helps your students formulate sentences. It also works well with group. To do this ESL
Make a sentence
activity:
For large classes you will need a set for each group. If needed you can create one and then
photocopy them and cut them out. Alternatively you can hand the paper to each group and tell them
what to write on each piece. This would save you time.
1. Students get a piece of paper and put down three facts about themselves
snowballs
2. Tell the students to take the paper on which the facts about them have just been written and
level : intermediate - crumple it.
Advanced 3. Introduce a 30 second” snowball” fight to the students and let them throw the crumpled
papers around.
4. After 30 seconds, tell each student to choose a crumbled” snowball”
5. Let the class come back together and instruct the students to read out what is written on the
snowball in their hands. They should also try to guess whose facts are on the crumbled
papers. If they have their own they should not tell anybody, just read it.
Teacher states a command for action and the students repeat the phrase before performing the action.
TPR Commands Game
Actions could vary from simple ( such as” touch your toes”) to more complex vocabulary an
example is aerobics, yoga or sport vocabulary
1. A student or teacher makes a statement about yesterday in front of the class , such as “
Yesterday
yesterday, I went shopping.
level : intermediate 2. The class then throws a question to get more information, such as” where did you go, what
did you buy”
Student in their groups of 3 to 6 are required to mine of piece of technology. Each member of
Make a machine
the group has to do something different, still representing the technology in action. Sound
effects are not allowed since this is a miming action. The rest of the class observes and
guesses what technology their colleague is miming.
Ask the students 1 or 2 simple questions and let them have 5 minutes to write their answers. Pick
Question of the day
some students at random to share their responses with the rest of the group. The questions
can be something like : what day is it today ? or what is the colour of the shoes you are
wearing? This usually helps students develop their listening skill. Students can also be
allowed to ask their simple questions.
