Projectile Motion Lab Phet

This document describes experiments on projectile motion. It aims to show that 1) the time of flight is independent of initial speed, and 2) air resistance affects a projectile's range. The experiments involve firing projectiles at varying speeds from a launcher using a simulation and measuring time of flight. Results are recorded in tables and analyzed to determine if time of flight depends on speed (it does not) and if air resistance impacts horizontal range and velocity (it does).

Projectile Motion

Objectives:
1- To show the time of flight of a horizontal projectile is independent of its initial speed.
2- To show that air resistance has an effect on the range of a projectile.

Part I:
What is projectile motion?

Procedures:
1- Copy the following link (from PHET Simulation):

2- Click on Lab icon.

3- Set the height to 8m, and the angle of the launcher θ=25 0 .

4- Set the velocity of the projectile at 12 m/s, then fire the ball and measure the time, repeat this
step 5 times while gradually increasing the velocity by 2.

5- Record your data in Table (1).

1- Discuss your results after analyzing your table, is it independent? Or dependent on the velocity?

2- Does changing the height and angle affect the time of flight? If yes, explain why.

3- Set the height to 10m, and the angle of the launcher θ=30 0

4- Set the velocity of the projectile at 11 m/s, then fire the ball and measure the range and
horizontal velocity at the specific times given in table (2) with air-resistance OFF.

6- Repeat the last step, but this time with air-resistance ON, and fill the recorded measurements in
the last 2 columns of table (2).

1- Discuss your results after analyzing your table, does air-resistance affect the horizontal range (X)
and horizontal velocity (Vx)?

2- Which angle produces the maximum range? And does air-resistance affect the maximum range
using the same angle (the angle that produces maximum range)?
