22. Holi is one of the most important festivals of the Indians. It is held to

are blossoming in the fields and Nature looks gay and beautiful. People

This festival commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon

Holi is celebrated throughout India. All people join in celebrating this

festival irrespective of caste, age and sex. The Vaishnavas specially celebrate
this festival. They worship Lord Krishna along with Radha swinging together.
All day long the people indulge in Holi. They cover themselves with gulal and
squirt coloured water at one another. Small children buy syringes (pichkaris)
and rejoice discharging coloured water at passers-by. Sometimes there are
accidents which lead to free fights. Many times it becomes the couse of
communal riots in India.
Young boys are seen parading the stree ts with blackened faces and
coloured clothes. They make everyone, who may come across them, the target
of their joke. They spare no one. Filthy abuse, obscene songs, coarse jokes
spoil the beauty and gaiety of this happy and festive occasion. We must
reform this festival and observe it in the right form and spirit-the enjoyment of
spring.

Holi is almost a national festival in fact, In all countries, spring is
enjoyed in one form or the other. After Holi, boys and men embrace one
another as a mark of friendship and good-will. At night they enjoy themselves
with dance and music.
