fp2 Numeracy Lesson Plan

This numeracy learning plan focuses on counting, quantities, and cooperative play through an ice cream themed activity. Children will work in pairs, taking turns as buyers and sellers in an ice cream shop. As buyers, they must request a certain number of ice cream balls and pay the price set by the seller using a combination of red and green ice cream sticks. The goal is for children to practice counting quantities and cooperating with peers. Materials include ice cream props, counting sticks, and a storybook to introduce the theme. Children will be engaged through role-playing, turn-taking, and sharing their experiences at the end.

Appendix 2: Learning Plan Template

Numeracy Learning Plan Date: 20/11/2020

Level / Age group: K2/ 5-6 years old Number of children: 8

Theme / Topic: Ice cream Duration: 30 minutes
Brief information about the interest, abilities and prior knowledge of the group of children:
Children in this class have an interest in ice cream. They understand the concept of part
part whole and enjoy cooperative play. The children are able to rote count up to 20 and
are able to recognise numerals.
Learning Areas1 Learning Goals Key Knowledge / Skills / Dispositions:
(A&C/ DOW/ (e.g. 1/ 2/ 3/ 4) (From NEL’s Educators’ Guide)
L&L/ MSD/
NUM/ SED)
Numeracy Learning goal - Count reliably up to 20 things
2 - Name parts that form a whole in quantity
Social Learning goal - Work and play cooperatively in a pair
Emotional 4
Development
Language & Learning goal - Enjoy listening to stories
Literacy 1, 2 - Express personal needs and wants
Learning Objectives: Children will be able to …
- Give the correct amount of ice cream sticks to the seller based on the price the seller
decides
- Give the correct amount of ice cream balls to the buyer based on the amount they
requested for
- Work cooperatively with each other
Learning Disposition: (choose ONE from NEL’s PRAISE)
 Engagement
Environment Set-up and Materials:
 1 ‘The Ice Cream King’ book by Steve Metzger
 40 red ice cream sticks and 40 green ice cream sticks
 12 apple and mint ice cream balls, 6 banana and grape ice cream balls
 8 ice cream cones toys
 4 tables
 9 chairs

Environment set-up: There will be 4 tables placed around the classroom with 2 chairs at
each table. 1 chair will be placed at the front of the classroom. On each table, there will
be 20 red ice cream sticks and 20 green ice cream sticks, 4 ice cream balls and 2 ice
cream cone toys.
Procedures: (include transitions and suggested questions in each section below)
Introduction (10 minutes)
 Talk to the children about ice cream
 Read ‘The ice cream king’ storybook to children
 Ask the children about their favourite ice cream flavours
 What are your favourite flavours?
 Why do you like that flavour?
 When do you eat ice cream?
Activities (10 minutes)
 Introduce the children to the activity where they have to get in pairs and buy/sell ice
cream to each other
 Get one child to come up and demonstrate the activity together with the teacher
 Explain that there will be 2 roles – 1 seller and 1 buyer. The seller will dictate the
price of the ice cream that the buyer buys, and the buyer must pay the amount the
seller asks for with the ice cream sticks found on the table and must use two different
colours to form the amount. Verbal instructions can be as such:
 Pair yourselves up with 1 friend.
 1 of you will be the ice cream seller while the other person is the buyer!
 The buyer needs to say which ice cream cone they want, and the amount of
ice cream scoops they want to buy
 The seller then needs to put the same amount of ice cream scoops inside the
cone to the buyer.
 The seller then gives the ice cream to the buyer and charges a price that the
seller decides.
 For example, Josh tells me that he wants 3 ice cream balls. So I give him 3 ice
cream balls inside a cone. Then, I have to tell Josh how much he needs to pay
for the ice cream. You need to pay with both the red and green ice cream
sticks. For example, I say 13 ice cream sticks. Josh will have to add together
ice cream sticks of both the colours of red and green to give me 13 ice cream
sticks. For example, he can give me 6 red ice cream sticks and 7 green ice
cream sticks to make 13 ice cream sticks.
 We can swap roles with each other anytime.
 Recap with the children what they need to do
 What does the buyer do?
 What does the seller do?
 How much is the ice cream?
 How do we pay?
 Do we take turns as the buyer and seller?
 Dismiss the children to do the activity at their tables
 The children can swap roles anytime

Differentiation:

Differentiation for children with higher ability: The number of ice cream sticks will be
increased to 30

Differentiation for children with lower ability: The number of ice cream sticks will be
reduced to 10

Closure and Clean up (10 minutes)

 Get everyone to pack the materials
 Get 3 volunteers to share what they did
 Teacher prompts questions for children to elaborate more on what they did
 Why did you set that price?
 How did you make that amount of ice cream sticks? (e.g. 5 red ice cream
sticks and 2 green ice cream sticks make 7 total ice cream sticks)
