Instruction:: Ce322-18 Steel Design - Assignment No. 3 Student Name: Student Number: DATE: 4-24-21

The document provides instructions for Assignment 3 in a steel design course. It states that calculations should be shown to 5 decimal places but answers rounded to 2, points will be deducted for missing information, and each problem should be on a new sheet of paper. It then lists 3 practice design problems: [1] deriving the Euler buckling formula, [2] designing truss members using W12 sections and A36 steel, and [3] determining the safe load of a braced column using a W12x72 section.

CE322-18 STEEL DESIGN – ASSIGNMENT NO.

STUDENT NAME: DATE: 4-24-21

STUDENT NUMBER:

INSTRUCTION:

I. Use five (5) decimal places for your calculations but record your final answer in two (2) decimal
places. The following ground rules will apply in the grading of problem sets for this course. Points
will be deducted for each of the following items:
 No sketches where sketches are necessary or desirable.
 No units where units are applicable.
 No rounding-off of final answers to an appropriate decimal place and no underlining of final
answers.
 Not numbering each page and each problem.
 Each problem should be seated on a new sheet of paper.

II. 25 points each problem

2. For the truss in previous problem, design the end diagonals and top chord members, Groups E, F
and G, using W12 sections, A36 steel and LRFD. Assume k = 0.9 and all joints are adequately
laterally supported. Pu = 270 kN.

3. Determine the safe load P (design strength) that the member below can carry. Use LRFD, A36
steel W12x72. The column is braced in the weak direction as shown.
