1. Textbook section 6.1 Describing Chemical Reactions, pg 225-227.

2. What is the purpose of the arrow in a chemical equation?

Lets you know the direction of the reaction and separates reactants from products.

3. Write word equations for the following reactions:

a) Acetic acid (vinegar) and sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda) react to
form water, carbon dioxide, and sodium acetate.
acetic acid + sodium hydrogen carbonate → water + carbon dioxide + sodium acetate

b) Aluminum metal reacts with oxygen from the air to form a protective coating
called aluminum oxide.
aluminum + oxygen → aluminum oxide

c) Water and carbon dioxide are produced when propane burns in oxygen.
propane + oxygen → water + carbon dioxide

d) Zinc metal reacts in a silver nitrate solution to produce zinc nitrate and silver
metal.
zinc + silver nitrate → zinc nitrate + silver

e) Inside an automobile airbag, sodium reacts with iron(iii) oxide to form sodium
oxide and iron.
sodium + iron (iii) oxide → sodium oxide + iron

f) Sodium azide decomposes into sodium and nitrogen

sodium azide → sodium + nitrogen

4. Write skeletal equations for b and e from question #3 above.

b) Al(s) + O 2(g) → Al 2O3(s)

e) Na + Fe2O3 → Na2O + Fe
5. Match the following terms to their definitions.

1. __D___chemical reaction a) A chemical that is produced

during a chemical reaction
2. __E___word equation b) A way of describing a chemical
reaction using the chemical
3. __B___chemical equation formulas of the reactants and
products
4. __C___reactant c) A chemical, present at the start
of a chemical reaction, that is
5. __A___product used up during the reaction
d) A process in which substances
interact, causing the formation of
new substances with new
properties
e) A way of describing a chemical
reaction using the names of the
reactants and products

6. Translate the following skeletal equations to word equations.

a) H2 + O2 → H2O

hydrogen + oxygen → water

b) PbO2 → PbO + O2

lead (iv) oxide → lead (ii) oxide + oxygen
