Tutorial Sheet - 1 (Analysis of Forces) - Engineering Mechanics (AM12101)

This document provides a tutorial sheet with 10 practice problems in engineering mechanics covering topics like scalars and vectors, principles of transmissibility, the parallelogram law, and Lami's theorem. The problems involve determining forces, components, and angles in systems with objects on inclined planes, cylinders in contact, and forces acting on eyebolts, joints, beams, and more. Diagrams are provided for each problem numbered correspondingly. References for further information are also included.

Tutorial Sheet-1.1 (Analysis of Forces) B.Tech. (II Semester), Session 2020-21
**************************************************************************************************************************************
NOTE:
(1) Topics covered: Scalars & Vectors, Principle of Transmissibility, Parallelogram law, Lami’s theorem.
(2) Figures are numbered corresponding to their questions e.g. for question 1, figure is numbered as Q1.
(3) Reference: Engineering Mechanics, Vol.-1 (Statics), J. L. Meriam and L. G. Kraige and Engineering Mechanics by R. C. Hibbeler etc.
**************************************************************************************************************************************
1. If the magnitude of the resultant force is to be 9 kN directed along the positive x axis, determine the magnitude of force T acting on the eyebolt
and its angle θ. (Fig. Q1).
2. The device is used for surgical replacement of the knee joint. If the force acting along the leg is 360 N, determine its components along the x’
and y axes. (Fig. Q2).
3. If the resultant force is required to act along the positive u axis and have a magnitude of 5 kN, determine the required magnitude of FB and its
direction θ. (Fig. Q3)
4. Each box weighs 40 N. The angles are measured relative to the horizontal. The surfaces are smooth. Determine the tension in the rope A and
the normal force exerted on box B by the inclined surface. (Fig. Q4).
5. The beam is to be hoisted using two chains. If the resultant force is to be 600 N directed along the positive y axis, determine the magnitudes of
forces FA and FB acting on each chain and the angle θ of FB so that the magnitude of FB is a minimum. FA acts at 30° from the y axis, as shown
in Fig. Q5)
6. Determine the components of the 800-lb force F along the oblique axes a and b. Also, determine the projections of F onto the a- and b-axes.
(Fig. Q6).
7. The 50-kg homogeneous smooth sphere rests on the 30o incline A and bears against the smooth vertical wall B. Calculate the contact forces at
A and B (Fig. Q7)
8. Two cylinders (weights W1 and W2) are pin-connected by a bar (weight negligible). They rest on two smooth inclined planes as shown in Fig.
Q8. Given: W1 = 200 N, W2 = 300 N, α = 60◦. Calculate the angle ϕ in the equilibrium position and the corresponding force S in the bar.
9. Determine the magnitude and direction of the equilibrium force exerted along link AB by the tractive apparatus shown. The suspended mass is
10 kg. Neglect the size of the pulley at A. (Fig. Q9)
10. Three cylinders weighting 100 N each and of 80 mm diameter are placed in a channel of 180 mm width (Fig. Q10). Determine the pressure
exerted by (i) the cylinder A on B at the point of contact (ii) the cylinder B on the base and (iii) the cylinder B on the wall.
