Lacuna of International Ranking Systems
 All Ranking exercises are controversial, and no ranking is
absolutely without flaws.
 Criticisms mainly due to their differences in structures,
methodologies, criteria or indicators.
 Ranking designers – primarily newspapers and magazines
– with no direct responsibility for the higher education
sector
 One of the main functions of any university—teaching—is
largely ignored in all of the rankings.
 ICT infrastructure and its application missing in most of
rankings
Lacuna of International Ranking Systems
 Domination of so called developed countries in almost
all ranking tables
 It raises the question of Have and Have Not‘s
 Higher academic systems of developing countries as a
whole suffer from ranking tables
 International students and faculties as an indicator
disadvantages many developing countries
Other Rankings in India

 Despite of all criticisms against league tables, it is clear that
university ranking tables are not going to disappear but will
continue to be published in ever-increasing numbers.
 Participation in ranking is the only choice – so participate
 Learn to capture, clean and validate the data in all aspects
 What we can do is to have focused and long-term
investments and commitment to excellence in education,
research and innovation-Nanyang Technological University-
1981-48 rank THE
Conclusion
 Research collaboration with international staff and
universities
 “talent attraction programmes”
 “Try to get better but not bigger-California
Technological University
 At an institutional level, rankings can help to focus
the minds of faculty on the core business of
teaching, research and knowledge transfer.
