CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Global Positioning Satellites network is known to have offered users with many
applications especially in the area of tracking. Currently, fisherman who lost their way in the sea
could locate their position by using GPS receiver installed on their boat. They could acquire a
coordinate and call for a rescue crew to save them with reference to the GPS coordinate. GPS is
used for navigation and provides continuous and timing information position of things anywhere
in the world under any weather condition. GPS consist nominally of 24 operational satellites
orbiting the earth at very high altitude. Satellites send signals to the GPS receiver to locate the
exact position. These satellites are constantly monitored to make sure that they are working
properly. The GPS parts consist of three segments which are user, space and control. This project
will focus on the ground segment. This segment is further divided into two parts. First is for
control and command of the satellite and the second is for receiving and exploiting some set of
data. The GPS receiver is used to capture the current location and data provided by the GPS
which it couldn’t be understand by human because of its ASCII character. This GPS data needs
to be extracted and decoded in order to get the desired information. Besides that, GPS receiver
can also provides information such as time, status, altitude, number of satellite in view to get the
current latitude and longitude for a particular location. (Kennedy, Q. 2009)
On the other hand, Android mobile platform is becoming more popular to the users for its
multi-dimensional purposes. Thus, this proposed system namely “GPS-based Location
Tracking System via Android Device” uses GPS and any mobile phones having an Android
operating system to track the location of a person whenever necessary.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) will provide effective information in real time on
locating, mapping and find the location of specific place. Return to the monitoring device by
improving the level of service provided. A GPS location finder informs the user of the location of
the specific place and its location and duration. The system uses geographic position and time
information from global positioning satellites. This system consists of an Android mobile phone
containing a GSM and GPS modem and the processor permanently integrated into the vehicle.
This device is called a tracking device that continuously accesses its current location and sends
updates to the server. At the monitoring device that is an Android application provides the user
the exact location of the vehicles of his interest.
A GPS location finder system uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) which
works in conjunction with a range of satellites and uses microwave signals for communication. A
GPS device can be installed in the vehicle or used as a portable device.
The microwave signals are transmitted to the GPS device and received back to obtain
information on the real position of the vehicle, its speed and direction. This information can be
viewed online or in real time and can be saved for future reference (Maurya , K. 2016).
In addition to, the GPS system can be used for various functions to track, control and
identity your specific location. Some of its important features are live speed monitoring, live
location on the map, activation / deactivation report of the vehicle's air conditioning, car door
opening alert, system fuel theft, the immobilization of the vehicle in case of theft, panic
emergency button, anti-theft alert system of the vehicle, rental car theft deterrent system, report
of theft car on / off the global positioning system (GPS) is a global radio navigation system
consisting of the constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. GPS transport services
can be placed in a vehicle, on a mobile phone, on special GPS devices, which can be a fixed or
portable unit (Ritika, A. 2015).
The transportation tracking system is a way to monitor the location of a vehicle, the GPS
system, widely deployed to track fleets of trucks. Transport tracking ensures that vehicles are
used properly and can be recovered in the event of theft. Transportation tracking is based on both
Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) and a cellular system. A tracking module in the vehicle
continuously collects GPS coordinates indicating the real-time position of the vehicle. Using a
cellular data service, the coordinates are immediately transmitted to the computers of the
tracking company. Customers can then connect to the tracking company's website to see their
vehicles on road maps, similar to the in-dash and portable GPS navigation systems.
A GPS system combines the use of automatic location in individual environment with
software that collects this data to obtain a complete picture of specific locations. Modern location
systems commonly use GPS or GLONASS technology to locate a mechanic workshop, but other
types of automatic location technology may also be used. Mechanic information can be viewed
on electronic charts via the Internet or specialized software. Urban transit companies are
increasingly using GPS locating systems, especially in larger cities. (Rameshbabu, N. 2014).
A real-time location finder system was required to transmit the collected information after
regular intervals or at least could transmit the information when the monitoring station requested
it. Active systems have also been developed to transmit data in real time via cellular or satellite
networks to a remote computer or data center.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Location tracking has been of great importance since centuries, when military planners
realized its usefulness for targeting, positioning, and navigation. Intoday's era, its significance
has been increased. We can know the location of a specific place like mechanic workshop using
GPS when connected to internet. But the drawback of the system is it cannot work without
internet. So, to overcome the problems of online location tracking such as no network area or
low signal strength, i proposed a system which will track assets for particular area also we can
track location from source to destination.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Journal of Engineering Trends and Technology”. This system is helpful for public transport
vehicles such as buses and taxis, it provides Tele monitoring and management system for the
transportation of the taxis and buses within the city. In this paper the system mentioned consists
of an-On- board module‖ which is mounted in the vehicle which is to be tracked. This on-board
module consists of Global Positioning System, a GSM modem and ARM processor. The
navigation message which is broadcasted by the GPS position satellite is received and resolved
by the GPS receiver of the vehicle terminal. This satellite computes the longitudes and latitudes
of vehicle coordinates, then transform it into the short message form by using GSM
communication controller and this message is sent to the monitoring center through the GSM
network
Beren (2018) worked on “Design and development of GPS-GSM based tracking system
with Google map based monitoring”. This system uses Global Positioning System (GPS) which
is used to receive the coordinates of latitude and longitude form the satellite during the critical
information. We all know that tracking system is now-a-days a very important in modern world.
This system can be used in the monitoring of soldiers, also in tracking the theft of the vehicle and
in many more other applications. This system uses microcontroller, Global Positioning System
(GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). This system uses only one GPS
device and GSM enable a two way communication process. GSM modem is provide with a SIM
card which uses the same and regular communication process as we are using in regular phone.
There have been many works published related GPS tracking system. However, all these
working are implemented using external hardware interfaces. The accurate tracking of targets is
highly challenging without using external modems or tracking chips for getting the exact
location of the user.
The work done by Mistary and Chile represents vehicle tracking system using GPS, GSM
modem and micro-controller. The work is implemented for monitoring the movement any time
of any equipped vehicle. In this system, GPS receiver receives the location data and convert this
data into the data string of NMEA 0183 format in continuously periodic manner. At operator
station, the receiver receives and put this reading into the GUI application made in MAT-LAB.
The application contained an algorithm which gets the NMEA reading and converts into degree
format suitable for Google earth which is called by using an algorithm. The system can be
improved by connecting GSM modem to the GUI, for lower the need of operator and making the
system more reliable.

using GPRS, GSM, the Internet and GPS, essentially helpful for feet operators in monitoring
driving the behavior of employee. The system consists of the web and mobile application for the
end user. The developing approach for making this system includes the proposed GPS vehicle
tracking system is mainly executed using JAVA 2 Enterprise Edition platform (J2EE5), JAVA 2
Standard Edition Platform (J2SE 6) and J2ME.
MIDP (Mobile Information Device Profile), combined with the CLDC (Connected Limited
Device Configuration). The SMS alerts are also provided for the notification of the certain
events. The system can be improved by increasing the services of the application and improving
GUI.
The work done by Thong, Chua Tien Han and Tharek Abdul Rahman proposed front-end
intelligent and web-based FMS to manage vehicle feet efficiently and effectively. This
implemented work includes an intelligent front-end terminal installed in targeted vehicles which
communicate with feet management control center through GSM channels, which is monitored
by using web-based dashboard.
To determine précised location of object khan And Ravi have proposed tracking unit which it is
attached and using GSM modem this information can be transmit to remote user.
This system contains GPS and GSM modems along with ARM processor that is setup in
the vehicle. Through SMS the location of vehicle can be reported. GSM and Global Positioning
System (GPS) technologies helps to track the vehicles exact information. Real time control is
provided by SMS system. You can monitor the location from anywhere using this system.
Jignesh B Jadav, Dr.K.H.Wandra, as in proposed system has the control and
communication between the user and device are achieved through a short message services
(SMS) protocol available in the mobile phone. SeokJu Lee,
Girma as in proposed system can get only the location of the conveyance, this project provides
ignition switch and immobilizer relay which can immediately seize the engine ignition just by
sending a message from android application. In addition, it also provides fuel security.
2.2 REVIEW OF GENERAL TEXT
The security of personal and public conveyances is a chief issue and so having Global
Positioning System (GPS) automobile tracking machine to your conveyance, and ascertain its
protection when you are touring. This conveyance monitoring system may be applied within the
personal conveyances or may be observed in customer’s conveyances as a larceny aversion and
retrieval device. Police officers can comply with the sign transmitted with the aid of the tracking
device to find a vehicle that's glommed. This machine can be set up for the four wheelers but in
India in which majority of the human beings making use of wheelers bikes, the maximum frugal
supply of an anti-larceny is the automobile tracking gadget. Fleet operators usually use
conveyance monitoring systems for fleet management features which includes routing, dispatch,
on -board facts and protection.
Vehicle robbery is the principle situation for the behavior of this task, is one in every of the
largest crimes that's hard to remove. The ultra-modern trend of automobile robbery entails the
vehicle being taken away, and also alarm signal capturing where the alarm disabler signal can be
traced by thief using a tool to seize the signal and use it to disable the alarm. There are numerous
options to prevent the auto theft, common vehicle alarm machine which nearly all vehicles have
the system established, and additionally GPS in which the positions of the vehicles are traced.
CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY AND ANALYSIS OF THE SYSTEM
3.1 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The system has 2 modules whereby each module work hand in hand together in order to achieve
the objectives of this project. The first module will handle locating part, which will track the
mechanic workshop details and the second module is to get exact location information from
GPS.
Global positioning system find nearby location Street Address, City, Country and Zip code. Also
Show you’re way to reach the place with speed of travelling. This application is used for
emergency case we able to find location of nearby hospitals and contact detail. It’s providing
automatically emergence call to the particular location. Google map find distance of the two
places. Also know driving direction of the two cities and Travelling time and distance of the
place. Application is finding nearby hospitals via the GPS and also driving direction.
3.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE EXISTING SYSTEM
The slow dissemination of information is a problem usually hap-pens in big cities with many on-
going activities and upcoming events. The residents and visitors of a certain city need to be
aware of these activities and events. Owing to the dynamic nature of city life, widely announced
activities and spontaneous specific activities are planned and/or changed. Consequently, affected
residents and visitors need to be readily aware of the relevant information. Location finding is an
important issue to be considered very seriously to manage our daily works in time.
3.3 PROBLEMS OF THE EXISTING SYSTEM
The problems are itemized below.
1. Lack of proper, correct, accurate and concise information about the specific location
2. The delay associated with the finding of the location of the specific is annoying.
3.4 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM
This proposed system provides the facility to search all the nearby mechanics
information in one place and also the application is so powerful that it can easily able to find
your current location and then rout you to the selected mechanic workshop without putting any
extra effort. Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled navigation in devices that precisely
determines geographical location by receiving GPS co-ordinates information from the GPS
satellites. Originally, it was only used by the United States military, but later this service is
available freely worldwide and now most receivers are integrated into smartphones, PC tablets,
airplanes, tracking devices and automobiles. At present, people feel more convenient to just use
their Smartphone built-in GPS as navigation tools instead of a separate GPS device. Smartphone
navigation typically gets free and speedy automatic updates as compare with commercial GPS
devices.
