Activity 1. Reflective Essay: Activities/Assessments

The document discusses an arnis student's reflective essay on essential skills and experiences learning arnis online. In the student's opinion, knowing the six striking techniques is the most essential skill as it teaches how and where to accurately strike vulnerable body zones. They argue a practitioner with only striking skills has an advantage over one with only stances. The student found learning arnis online through a screen challenging due to poor internet, distractions, and inability to learn techniques in person from an instructor. They learned online learning a physical activity requires more time, effort, perseverance and focus than in-person instruction.

Activity 1. Reflective Essay

Direction: Read the questions below carefully and write your answer on the space provided.
1. After learning the different basic skills in Arnis using single stick, what do you think is
the most essential skill that an Arnis practitioner should possess? Justify your reasons.
In my opinion, knowing the six striking technique is the most essential skill an arnis
practitioner should possess. Through this skill, the learner will know how and where to deliver
the strike with power and accuracy. It was also said that learning the striking techniques
effectively would also help the students to learn the different parts or zones of the body which
are considered as vulnerable more known as the six striking zones.
Assume there’s a fight between a beginner who only knows the six basic stances and a
beginner who only knows the six striking techniques. The former obviously is at the
disadvantage since they only know the proper stance. It will be like being in a battle without any
weapon. The latter on the other hand, is at a great advantage because not only did they know
the vulnerable zones, they also know how to strike properly.
Just like what many fighters say, it will always be better to attack than to defend. To
attack is to defend. Attack is the best form of defense.

2. Kindly share your experiences in doing the activities or drills. Did you find them
difficult or challenging? After doing the activities, what are the values that you learned from
them?
Learning the skills and techniques was a bit challenging for me. Learning them in front of
a screen was different and harder than learning them in person. I faced a lot of barriers like poor
internet connection and not knowing whether I’m doing the right thing. Without a consistent
internet connection, lack of continuity in learning will likely occur. I also struggled focusing on
the screen. It may be because of my environment, where my family members were also doing
some things that may cause distractions for me.
After doing the activities, I learned that online learning for a subject that requires a
physical activity takes more time and effort. A student needs to persevere and be focused. Arnis
is a difficult martial art to learn personally. What more if it would be learned through online.
