The Future of Work

Week 1 Tutorial: Machine Learning

Welcome to the first tutorial of the Future of Work. We’re glad that you’re here and look forward to
the discussions over the next two hours. We’ve plenty of time, so why don’t we get started with
some introductions.

ACTIVITY 1: INTRODUCTIONS [15 minutes]

Let’s go around the room and introduce ourselves, shall we? Tell us your name, where
you’re from, what your dream job is after graduation, and an interesting fact about yourself.
Let’s get to know one another since we’ll be working collaboratively for the next 12 weeks.

Okay, the next thing we need to do is to break you up into groups of around five students each.
These groups are important because you will be working with your team on an industry challenge
later in the semester. In the meantime, we’d like you to sit with your group in all tutorials. This will
help you build friendships that will help you work well together in the coming months.

We would like each group to be diverse. Accordingly, we have used a random number table to
preselect groups.

ACTIVITY 2: GET TO KNOW YOUR TEAM MEMBERS [15 minutes]

Your tutorial leader will break you up into your groups. Spend some time getting to know
each other. Exchange contact details so you can get in touch with one another. Discuss the
following question together:

 What kinds of problems have you faced with groupwork in the past and how can we
ensure that those same problems don’t repeat themselves in this group?

Working effectively and collaboratively in a team is one of the most important skills you will
learn at university. Employers are looking for team players. They want to hire people who
bring out the best in the team, not disrupt the team. Make sure you find a way to make
these relationships work.

Okay, now that we’ve broken up into our groups, it’s time to turn our attention to the topic at hand:
machine learning and its implications for work and employment generally, and for human resource
management particularly.

ACTIVITY 3: MACHINE LEARNING AND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT [30 minutes + 15 minutes
class discussion]

Spend 30 minutes in your groups discussing the following three questions:

 Is machine learning a threat or an opportunity for human resources professionals?

Defend your answer.
 How will human resource management practices look different 20 years from now in
light of expected machine learning advances?
RMIT Classification: Trusted

 Give specific examples of how machine learning will change: (1) recruitment and
selection, (2) performance management, (3) training and development, (4)
compensation management, and (5) health and safety at work.

Having discussed these questions, now spend 15 minutes as a class sharing your answers.

ACTIVITY 4: GROUP DISCUSSION OF MINI-ESSAY QUESTION 1 [30 minutes]

Assessment Task 1 isn’t due until Week 6, however, you need to start thinking about this
assessment from Week 1. The first question in Assessment Task 1 is the following:

 “Machine learning will eventually lead to the end of all work.” Discuss. (200 words)

Spend the next 30 minutes within your group discussing this statement. Is it true or false?
Why or why not? Even if machine learning doesn’t lead to the end of all work, will it lead to
the end of some work? If so, what types of work? Will machine learning increase automation
of work?

Excellent work, everyone! We have about 15 minutes left before the end of the tutorial. This is your
opportunity to ask the tutor any questions you might have about the course or assessments.

Thanks everyone for your participation today!
