Adjustable parameters – Engine

Introduction

Introduction
To limit this list of adjustable parameters, only parameters considered to be of use to
bodybuilders are described. For full details of the current parameters for a specific
vehicle, contact an authorised Scania workshop. The parameters are stored in the ve-
hicle's various control units, and can be adjusted using SDP3 (Scania Diagnos & Pro-
grammer 3) and SDP3 for bodybuilders.

This document is a comprehensive list. Which of these parameters and settings are
available in a specific vehicle depends on how the vehicle is equipped and the vehicle
specification.

Apart from the adjustable parameters, there are also parameters which describe the Further information about SOPS is contained in the document Reprogramming con-
physical specification of the vehicle in a SOPS file (Scania On-board Product Spec- trol units under General information.
ification). This type of parameter may need to be updated when a conversion is car-
ried out.

Introduction

SDP3 for bodybuilders

SDP3 for bodybuilders enables bodybuilders to check and adapt the parameters de-
scribed in this document.

SDP3 for bodybuilders is a limited version of SDP3, which is used by Scania work-
shops. The tool is limited to only deal with parameters for bodybuilders.

Remote engine start control

Remote engine start control

Remote engine start (BWS)
This is where you can select whether remote engine start should be possible and how
the bodywork control unit should indicate that remote engine start was successful.

• By flashing - If this option is set, the vehicle will flash all its direction indicators
to indicate that remote engine start has been carried out. This option is useful e.g.
when remote starts are carried out in noisy environments.
• No flashing - This option means that remote engine start is possible, but the vehi-
cle will not flash the direction indicators to indicate that remote engine start has
been carried out.
• Without - This option means that remote engine start is not possible.

Default setting: Without or By flashing.

Explanation: This parameter can only be adjusted on vehicles ordered with prepa-
ration for remote engine start. If the vehicle is to be equipped with the remote engine
start preparation package after delivery, conversion is necessary.
Before using remote engine start, check that the following conditions have been met:

• Starter key in the drive position

• EXT in the On position
• No active command for engine shutdown
• Parking brake applied
• Drive mode selector in neutral position

Remote engine start control

Verification period during remote engine start

(BWS)
During remote engine start, the starter switch must be kept depressed for a certain
time, the verification period. If the starter switch is released too early, before the ver-
ification period has elapsed, the engine will be switched off. This shutdown comes
from the bodywork control unit via an engine shutdown command.

This is where you set this verification period.

The verification period can be changed within a certain range, or it can be set to 0 if
this type of verification is not required.

• Values available: 0–5 s.

Default setting: 1 s.
Explanation: This parameter can only be adjusted on vehicles ordered with prepa-
ration for remote engine start. If the vehicle is to be equipped with the remote engine
start preparation package after delivery, conversion is necessary.

Selection of signal input for remote engine start

(BWS)
This is where you can set the type of signal input which should be used when remote
engine start is requested.

• Active high - A signal that is active when digitally high.

• External CAN - The signal comes from the external CAN bus in the bodywork.

Default setting: Active high.

Monitored remote engine shutdown

Monitored remote engine shutdown

Monitored remote engine shutdown (BWS)
This is where you set the option for engine shutdown from outside the vehicle and
also if the bodywork control unit should carry out a sequential check. A sequential
check means that the bodywork control unit checks that the signals that are required
to shut down the engine have been activated in the correct order.

The following options are available:

• None - No sequential check will be carried out.

• Check - A sequential check will be carried out. In order for the engine to be
switched off, it is also necessary for the remote control enabled switch (EXT) to
be switched on.
• Without - This option means that remote engine shutdown is not possible.

Default setting: Without.

Note:
To ensure that the vehicle can be driven normally after setting this parameter, pin 12
in connector C259 must be connected to ground. Only applies to vehicles in which
the parameter Selection of signal input for monitored remote engine shutdown is set
to Active low.

Monitored remote engine shutdown

Selection of signal input for monitored remote en-

gine shutdown (BWS)
This is where you can set the signal input that should be used when engine shutdown
is requested.

• Active low - A signal that is active when it is digitally low.

• External CAN - The signal comes from the external CAN bus in the bodywork.

Default setting: Active low.

Explanation: Active low means that the connection is grounded and that the external
engine shutdown function is activated when the grounding is interrupted by a break-
ing switch. This ensures the protection against open circuits required by an emergen-
cy stop function. However, this engine shutdown function is not approved as an
emergency stop function in line with the EU Machinery Directive.

Note:
This also means that pin 12 in connector C259 must be temporarily connected to
ground if the vehicle is to be driven before the bodywork is connected to the body-
work interface.

Monitored remote engine shutdown

Vehicle speed conditions for monitored remote en-

gine shutdown (EMS)
This condition is only used with the function Monitored remote engine shutdown.

Drive the vehicle faster than the selected speed. When engine shutdown is requested
the engine will first drop to idling, and when its speed is below the speed selected,
the engine will be switched off.

• 1-20 km/h in increments of 1 km/h.

Default setting: 1 km/h.

Note:
The vehicle loses power steering when the engine is switched off.

Torque limiter

Torque limiter
Selection of signal input for torque limiter 1, 2 or 3
(BWS)
This is where you can set the type of signal which should be sent to the bodywork
control unit when activation of the torque limiter is requested.

• Active low - A signal that is active when it is digitally low.

• External CAN - The signal comes from the external CAN bus in the bodywork.

Default setting: Active low

Explanation: This choice affects whether the connections for discrete signals, pins
1 and 2 in connector C259, or the connection for CAN signals, pins 20 and 21 in con-
nector C259, are to be used.

Torque limiter

Own torque curve – Torque limiter 3 (EMS)

This is where you can set your own torque curve for the Torque limiter 3 function by
entering the maximum torque for each engine speed increment. You can never
achieve a torque greater than that the engine can accomplish. The function is activat-
ed via the bodywork control unit. It continues to be active even if you depress the
brake or clutch pedals.

The default setting gives a torque curve with what is known as an early breakaway.
The engine torque begins to decrease at 1,000-1,100 rpm and disappears completely
at approximately 1,500 rpm. At engine speeds above 1,800 rpm the torque curve will
follow the setting for 1,800 rpm.

• 0– (engine-dependent value) Nm in increments of 20 Nm.

Note:
A high basic value is shown if no setting has been made.

Comment for vehicles produced before November 2007: The function can be used to
limit torque and engine speed. The torque is set to 0 Nm to limit the engine speed. To
limit the engine speed to 1,000 rpm for example, set the torque to 0 Nm from 1,000
rpm onwards.

Selection of signal input for hand throttle control
(mode 0, mode 1, mode 2 and mode 4) (BWS)
This is where you can set the type of signal which will be sent to the bodywork con-
trol unit when the hand throttle control buttons (ACC, RET and RES) are used.

• Active low - A digital input which is active when it is grounded.

• External CAN - The signal comes via the external CAN bus in the bodywork.

Default setting: Active low

Explanation: Indicates whether the engine speed should be controlled via CAN or
the external cruise control switch, pins 6 and 7 connector C259. Applies to the func-
tions: Hand throttle, Limited hand throttle, Raised idling speed and Remote engine
speed control.

Selection of signal input for engine speed control 1
and 2 (mode 4) (BWS)
This is where you can set the type of signal which will be sent to the bodywork con-
trol unit when engine speed control 1 and 2 are requested.

• Active high - A digital input which is active when it is energised.

• External CAN - The signal is received via the external CAN bus.

Default setting: Active high

Selection of governor characteristics for engine

speed control 1 and 2 (mode 4) (BWS)
Here you set whether the control of engine speed for a changed load should be soft
or hard. The function is only used when an alternative regulator is activated via CAN
or by a signal to C259, pin 19.
When an alternative regulator is not enabled, normal engine speed control is used.

• Soft control is done slowly to get a smooth transition to the requested engine
speed and thus provide a stable behaviour.
• Hard control is done quickly to achieve the requested engine speed as quickly as
possible. Hard control may result in an unstable behaviour and should be avoided
for certain applications. For example, vibrations and natural oscillations may oc-
cur.

Type of control during engine speed control 1

(mode 4) (BWS)
This is where you can set whether the engine speed should be locked or whether it
can be controlled via the hand throttle control when engine speed control 1 is used.

• Fixed - The engine speed is locked.

• Hand throttle control - The signals come via the hand throttle control.

Default setting: Hand throttle control

Note:
If the hand throttle control is obtained via digital inputs on the bodywork control unit
or via CAN, this is indicated via the parameter Selection of signal input for hand
throttle control.

Size of increment during engine speed control 1

(mode 4) (BWS)
This is where you can set how much the engine speed should change for each short
press of the button when engine speed control 1 is used.
It is possible for the driver to control the engine speed from outside the vehicle. This
is done using two switches, one for acceleration and one for retardation, ACC and
RET, which are connected to the bodywork control unit. These allow stepped or step-
less engine speed control.

Stepped control is obtained via short presses on one of the two switches. On the other
hand, stepless control is obtained by one long press on one of the two switches.

• 10-250 rpm in increments of 10 rpm.

Default setting: 50 rpm.

Gear change engine speed for automatic gearbox

during engine speed control 1 and 2 (mode 4)
(BWS)
This is where you can set an engine speed level which allows a gear to be engaged
from neutral.
If a gear is engaged from neutral during engine speed control 1 and 2, the bodywork
control unit reduces the engine speed to the value that this parameter is set to so that
the gear can be engaged. If the engine speed was higher, the gearbox safety function
would prevent the gear from being engaged (the value is controlled by a parameter
in the gearbox control unit). When the gear has been engaged, the engine speed re-
turns to remote engine speed control.

• 600–2,000 rpm in increments of 50 rpm.

Default setting: 600 rpm.

Note:
When engine speed is controlled remotely, and the automatic gearbox is forced into
neutral, this parameter can limit the engine speed of vehicles with frequent stop and
start, such as refuse collection vehicles. This applies to all gear positions apart from
"N".

Lower engine speed limit during engine speed con-

trol 1 and 2 (mode 4) (BWS)
This is where you can set the lowest engine speed permitted during remote engine
speed control. This value must be lower than the upper limit for engine speed.

• 600–2,000 rpm in increments of 50 rpm.

• None - Means that the bodywork control unit can control engine speed independ-
ently of vehicle speed.
• Stationary - Means that the vehicle must be stationary with the parking brake ap-
plied in order for engine speed control 1 and 2 to control the engine speed.
• Specific vehicle speed limit - You can set a speed limit which, if exceeded, disen-
gages engine speed control 1 and 2. The speed limit can be set to between 5 and
50 km/h in increments of 5 km/h.

Default setting automatic gearbox: Stationary

Default setting for manual gearbox or Opticruise: 10 km/h.

Note:
Check also the setting of the engine control unit parameter "Maximum speed during
engine speed control 1 and 2 (mode 4)". The speed set in the engine control unit must
be higher than this speed setting, otherwise the engine control unit setting will be the
limiting factor.

Remote engine speed control (mode 4)

Maximum torque during engine speed control 1 and

2 (mode 4) (EMS)
IMPORTANT!

Remember that the power take-off can be connected via a specific gear ratio. The out-
put shaft of a power take-off can have a different gear ratio and does not have the
same engine speed and thus the same torque as the engine output shaft.
So check the power take-off gear ratio when setting the maximum torque.

This is where you can set a torque which the engine must not exceed when engine
speed control 1 and 2 are used.

Engine speed control 1 and 2 are activated via the bodywork control unit (BWS).

Possible value Default setting

S6 300– (engine-dependent value) Nm in increments of 20 2,700 Nm.
Nm.
S7 300– (engine-dependent value) Nm in increments of 10 5,100 Nm.
Nm.
S8 300– (engine-dependent value) Nm in increments of 10 5,100 Nm.
Nm.

Adjustable parameters – Engine
Remote engine speed control (mode 4)

Maximum engine speed while braking during en-

gine speed control 1 and 2 (mode 4) (EMS)
This parameter applies only to vehicles with a torque converter.

This is where you can set an engine speed which the engine must not exceed when
engine speed control 1 and 2 are used if the vehicle is in motion and the driver brakes
at the same time. The function is adapted to vehicles that need to be mobile while
maintaining a high power output through the power take-off, such as fire engines.

The function is very safety-critical and the speed must never be set higher than the
speed at which the driver can brake the vehicle using the foot brake.

Engine speed control 1 and 2 are activated via the bodywork control unit (BWS).

Possible value Default setting

S6 600-1,500 rpm in increments of 50 rpm. 800 rpm.
S7 500–2,000 rpm in increments of 10 rpm. 800 rpm.
S8 500–2,000 rpm in increments of 10 rpm. 800 rpm.

Remote engine speed control (mode 4)

Maximum speed during engine speed control 1 and

2 (mode 4) (EMS)
This is where you can set a speed which the vehicle must not exceed when engine
speed control 1 and 2 are used.

Only some vehicles have this setting in the engine control unit. The required speed
limitation should be set using an adjustable parameter in the bodywork control unit
(BWS) and in order to prevent the engine control unit from limiting the function of
the bodywork control unit, the maximum vehicle speed should be set to 150 km/h. If
the vehicle speed set in the engine control unit is lower than the one set in the body-
work control unit, the vehicle speed that is set in the engine control unit will be the
applied vehicle speed.
• 0-150 km/h in increments of 1 km/h.

Default setting: 150 km/h.

Constant engine speed limitation

Constant engine speed limitation (EMS)
This is where you can set the engine speed that the engine must not exceed when the
function Remote engine speed limiter is activated.

• 500-3,000 rpm.

Default setting: 1,200 rpm.

Selection of signal input for constant engine speed

limitation (BWS)
This is where you can set the type of signal input which should be used when remote
engine speed limiter is requested. The engine speed value is set using the parameter
Remote engine speed limiter in the engine control unit.

• Without - The function is switched off.

• Active low - A digital input which is active when it has a ground connection.
• External CAN - The signal is received via the external CAN bus.

Accelerator pedal characteristics control (EMS)
The accelerator pedal characteristics can be controlled. There are 2 types of control:
RQ and RQV.

• RQV, all-speed governor - means that the engine holds the engine speed corre-
sponding to the throttle opening throughout the engine speed range.
• RQ, idling and maximum speed governor - means that the engine speed is only
controlled at idling speed and maximum speed. The engine speed is load depend-
ent in the mid range. When driving, e.g. uphill, the accelerator pedal must be de-
pressed further in order to maintain the same engine speed.
Default setting: RQV for vehicles with manual gearbox and RQ for vehicles with au-
tomatic gearbox or Opticruise.

Engine speed limitation (EMS)

Controls the engine speed immediately after starting a cold engine. The engine speed
is only allowed to exceed a certain limit after a time delay. Switch off the function
by setting it to Without. There will then be no limitation of the engine speed.

• Without
• With
Default setting: With

Explanation: Because of the risk of engine damage, a fault code will be generated if
the With option is used.
