Sports in the USA
The topic has been chosen by me is sports in the USA. This topic is very
interesting and popular in our modern life, because I believe it’s impossible to live
without sport activities now.
The USA is one of the most sport countries in the world. There are a lot of
kinds of sports there. American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey, Tennis,
Golf and others are among the most popular. People in the USA are fond of sports
very much. So, American’s interest in sports seems excessive to many foreign
visitors. Television networks spend millions of dollars arranging to telecast sports
events. We should mention also that the one reason of the popularity of sport in
America may be the variety and size of the USA. So, Americans have large choice
of summer and winter sports. Another reason might be that people in America like
competition in any sphere of their life, by teams or as individuals.
It’s very interesting that in the USA the organized sport is more popular that
other kinds of sports. So, the major sports are: Hockey, Football, Baseball,
Basketball, and Volleyball. The football is the most played in America. It is also
the 9th most popular sport all around the World. The biggest competition organized
under the National Football League (NFL). Football or Gridiron is more popular in
Southern areas of America, like Texas, Florida and California. The main
differences between Football in the USA and other its European cousins, rugby and
soccer is not just the size, speed and strength of its players. American football is
the most «scientific» of all outdoor team sports. Specific rules state what each
player in each position may and may not do, and when. There are hundreds of
possible «plays» (or moves) for teams on offence and defence. People in America
are nor watching Football in their homes. Fans are coming on stadiums and
enjoying the game. The second famous sport in America is Baseball. But, to be
honest, it is more informal sport in the USA. This sport is also known as the United
State’s national pastime. In America there are mainly two levels of baseball
competition: minor league baseball and major league baseball (MLB). Basketball
also is one of the most popular sports in the USA after Football and Volleyball. It
was invented as a game that would fill empty period between the football season
and the baseball season in America. Basketball competitions organized under the
National Basketball Association (NBA). With an estimated 14,000 attendance per
match, Basketball is the 3rd most popular sport in the US. Hockey is the 4th most
popular sport in America, especially in North America (particularly Canada and
northern parts of the US).
There are also many other sports and sports activities in America: golf,
swimming, tennis, marathon, track-and-field, bowling, archery, skiing,
skating, squash and badminton, rowing and sailing, weightlifting, boxing
and wrestling. 45% of all Americans take part in some athletic activity once a day.
Skating and tobogganing are wide-spread activities as water sports and activities,
including diving, sailing, white-water canoeing, water-skiing.
In conclusion I’d like mention that sports in America play a great role in
American’s people life. They like spend their free time watching different sport
programs, especially football matches. The passion to sport forms from childhood
in America. And the main reason of it is the way of life in the USA: it is the
competition.
