Basic Keyboarding & Fastyping: by The End of This Module, Students Must Be Able To
As you are aware, most people who are working will come into contact with a
computer during a standard working day. For some, this is a short time and others it
can be all day. Now imagine if that invaluable time currently spent typing on your or
your staff’s computer was reduced or even halved! Instantly there is more time available
for other tasks during the day, so if you have mounds of paperwork on your desk and
you find yourself looking at it thinking ‘this is going to take me all day’, then developing
the touch-typing skill could be the answer.
Steps:
2. Now use your fingers above and below to reach to the other keys while keeping your
fingers on the ‘home row’ only.
• you can learn this also from the web. Some online courses display a printed
keyboard on their websites as a teaching tool where a few letters and numbers
are colored to help you learn more effectively.
• online courses also teach you how to use your fingers for speedy typing.
3. You can type alphabets, numbers and anything you want using all the keys. It does
not matter what you are writing. Keep practicing and try to touch each and every
letter.
• For typing capital letters, press the shift key.
• informal writing helps you learn more quickly as you don’t have to concentrate
on the keyboard rather on screen.
4. Most important thing: don’t look at your keyboard while typing.
Always keep in mind that your goal, at first, should be to learn the keys of
the HOME ROW before you begin to build speed. Accuracy is much more important
for a beginning typist. There really is no "magic" or secret about good typing ability.
It just takes time, lots and lots of practice & patience. Listed below are some important
tips that will help you in the process.
For the Keyboard: The starting position is as follows: the main keys are F and J.
Place the fingers of your left hand on the keys A, S, D and F and the fingers of your right
hand on the keys J, K, L and; See the Terminology Page to understand that these keys
are located on the Home Row. After pressing a key remember to put your fingers back
on the home row [Left Hand: A S D F Right Hand: J K L; keys].

• Do not rush when you just started learning. Speed up only when your fingers hit
the right keys out of habit.
• Take your time when typing to avoid mistakes. The speed will pick up as you
progress.
• Always scan the text a word or two in advance.
• Always back to the basic home keys ( A S D F , J K L ; ). It will help you to
get above the average typing speed.
