1. The document provides a 10 question multiple choice exam on the Rankine cycle. Questions cover topics like typical efficiency ranges for steam power plants, factors that affect efficiency, the components and processes that make up the Rankine cycle, and regenerative heating. 2. It also includes 3 word problems to solve. The first asks the student to calculate efficiency, work output, and solar collector area needed for a simple Rankine cycle. The second asks for efficiency and work ratio of a cycle between 30 and 0.04 bar. The third asks for reheat pressure and efficiency of a reheat cycle operating between 150 and 0.1 bar. 3. The document is a test from a chemical engineering course assessing understanding of

Problem:
1. A simple steam power cycle uses solar energy for the heat input. Water in the cycle
enters the pump as a saturated liquid at 40°C, and is pumped to 2 bar. It then
evaporates in the boiler at this pressure, and enters the turbine as saturated vapour. At
the turbine exhaust the conditions are 40°C and 10% moisture. The flow rate is 150
kg/h. Determine (a) the turbine isentropic efficiency,
(b) the net work output
(c) the cycle efficiency
d) the area of solar collector needed if the collectors pick up 0.58 kW/ m 2 .
2. A simple Rankine cycle works between pressure of 30 bar and 0.04 bar, the initial

3. In a reheat cycle, the initial steam pressure and the maximum temperature are 150
bar and 550°C respectively. If the condenser pressure is 0.1 bar and the moisture at the
condenser inlet is 5%, and assuming ideal processes,
a. Determine the reheat pressure
b. Determine the cycle efficiency
