Absolute Value Functions Assignment:

1. Solve the following:

a. |9(− 4)| = 36

b. |13 − 29| + 8 = 24

c. |− 2(12 − 15)| − 3 = 3

d. |5(13 − 7) + 17| = 42

2. Determine the Piecewise function for the following absolute value functions:

a. 𝑓(𝑥) = |2𝑥| d. 𝑓(𝑥) = − 5𝑥| 2

|
𝑦 = 2𝑥, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥≥0 2
𝑦 = 5𝑥 , 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅
− 2𝑥, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 < 0

b. 𝑓(𝑥) = |𝑥 − 4| | 2|
e. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 9
2
𝑦 = 𝑥 − 4, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥≥4 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 9, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅
− 𝑥 + 4, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 < 4
2
|
f. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 4 − 11 |
c. 𝑓(𝑥) = |𝑥 + 15| − 16 2
𝑦 = 𝑥 − 7, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅
𝑦 = 𝑥 − 16, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥≥ − 15
− 𝑥 − 31, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 <− 15
3. Solve the following Absolute value equations :

a. |2𝑎 + 7| = 𝑎 − 4 c. |𝑥22 − 9| = 2𝑥2 − 9

2𝑎 + 7 = 𝑎 − 4, and
𝑥 − 9= 𝑥 − 9 (from x≤-3, x≥3)
− (2𝑎 + 7) = 𝑎 − 4
There are infinite solutions from x≤-3, x≥3, as the
𝑎 =− 11 𝑎 =− 1
two sides are the same graph for these values of
x.
Check
But when -3<x<3, they are no longer the same
|2(− 11) + 7| =− 11 − 4
graph.
|2(− 1) + 7| =− 1 − 4 2 2
15 = 15 5 =− 5 −𝑥 + 9 =𝑥 − 9
2
Extraneous root Extraneous root 0 = 2𝑥 − 18
No solutions 0 = 2(𝑥 − 9)
2
b. − 6|2𝑥 − 14| =− 42 Solutions are x=3, and x=-3, which is covered by
− 6(2𝑥 − 14) =− 42 the inequality below
6(2𝑥 − 14) =− 42
𝑥 = 3. 5 𝑥 = 10. 5
X≤-3, and x≥ 3

|
d. 𝑥 − 1 = 𝑥 |
𝑥 − 1= 𝑥
2
𝑥 − 𝑥− 1 = 0

x=1.618, x=0.618

|1. 6182 − 1| = 1. 618 |0. 6182 − 1| = 0. 618

|2. 6175 − 1| = 1. 618
|0. 3819 − 1| = 0. 618
1.618=1.618 |− 0. 618| = 0. 618

0.618=0.618

4. Graph the following absolute value functions

𝑓(𝑥) = |𝑥 − 2| 2
|
𝑓(𝑥) =− 1 𝑥 + 2 |
5. In communities in Nunavut, aviation fuel is stored in huge tanks at the airport. Fuel is
re-supplied by ship yearly. The fuel tank in Kugaaruk holds 50000L.The fuel resupply
brings a volume, V, in litres, of fuel plus or minus 2000 L.
a) Write an absolute value equation in the form |V - a| = b to describe the limits for the
volume of fuel delivered, where a and b are real numbers.

|𝑉 − 50000| = 2

b) Solve your absolute value equation to find the maximum and minimum volumes of
fuel.
V=48,000, 52,000

6. Determine whether each statement is sometimes true, always true, or never true,
where a is a natural number. Explain your reasoning.
a) The value of |x + 1| is greater than zero.
|𝑥 + 1|can equal 0. Therefore sometimes true

b) The solution to |x + a| = 0 is greater

than zero.
If x=-a, then |𝑥 + 𝑎| = 0 ,equals zero. The every other solution to |𝑥 − 𝑎| = 0is greater
than zero.
Therefore sometimes true

c) The value of |x +a|+a is greater than zero.

Since the minimum value of |𝑥 + 𝑎|is 0 (see above), and 0+a is greater than zero. The
value of |𝑥 + 𝑎| + 𝑎 is always greater than 0.
Always true
